[ laughter ] now some people have said, "maren, you're a country singer. what business do you have hosting a late night comedy show?" and to them i say, "mom, get out of my dressing room!" [ laughter ] i love being in l.a. i'm doing all of the touristy things. i saw the chinese theater. the hollywood boulevard elmo threw up in my purse. [ laughter ] that's good luck, right? you know, we're right across the street from where they used to film "american idol." and i actually auditioned for "idol" when i was 17, and i got turned down. didn't even make it past the first round. but i stuck with it, and ten years later i won a grammy. [ cheers and applause ] so. thank you. and when i was 9, i auditioned to be the host of "the man show." [ laughter ] and i didn't get that either. but look at me now. i'm jimmy kimmel.

[ cheers and applause ] like most people, i've had a stressful year. mostly because when i wear a mask, my name sounds like "karen." [ laughter ] i also gave birth to my first child in march of 2020. [ cheers and applause ] which means i've spent the whole pandemic in quarantine with an infant. so basically, this next hour is a vacation for me. [ laughter ] i don't care how much you cry, i will not be breastfeeding any of you. [ laughter ] got it, guillermo? >> guillermo: got it. >> maren: this is guillermo's first day back to work. [ cheers and applause ] yeah. he got covid and has been holed up at home for the past two weeks. but he's back, he's better than ever, and ready to do whatever it is he does here. [ laughter ] how are you feeling? >> guillermo: oh, i'm feeling great. [ cheers and applause ] >> maren: what would you like to

tell your adoring fans? >> guillermo: i want to thank you for all the love and support and go get the [ bleep ] vaccine, please. [ cheers and applause ] >> maren: it's important to get your vaccine. i got mine. after the first shot i felt nothing. after the second shot i had some light flu symptoms. after the third shot i was a little sore. after my fourth i was really feeling it. [ laughter ] and after shot 27 i got banned for life from walgreens. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] guillermo wasn't the only one who had to get up early today. it was back-to-school day here in l.a. did you know it's illegal to send your kids back to school without posting a backpack photo of them on instagram? [ laughter ] for real. 10 years in federal prison. health officials are worried about kids returning to the classroom because one of the biggest ways covid is spread is when parents breathe a huge sigh of relief. you know, i never tormented my teachers because i'm a good person. but a lot of students did. so in honor of the first day of school, we sent a camera out on hollywood boulevard to let people apologize for all the terrible stuff they did to the brave souls who were just trying to educate them. ♪ >> do you have any teachers you'd like to apologize to? >> in sixth or seventh grade our teacher miss coakley had left her laptop open, and me and my best friend didn't have the best grades in that class, so we logged on to her laptop and changed our grades. and she started crying because she said she had really trusted us. i'm sorry, miss coakley. you're a great teacher. >> do you have any teachers you'd like to apologize to? >> yeah. to my second grade teacher. i asked her when she was going to give birth. turns out she wasn't pregnant. so i'm sorry about that. >> yeah, my tenth grade english teacher, the reason i want to apologize is we used to take a dog whistle and sit in the back

and it -- she gave us some time before she noticed. by that point all the kids were passing it around without her knowing. it got to me. i brought it home accidentally. and my dog got to it. so the dog chewed on it and whatever. but i got it back so it's still in one piece. it was just very dirty. got back to school and returned it without her knowing. and when she found it, she went to the bathroom and put it on and i felt bad ever since. so i would like to apologize to miss sandy. [ cheers and applause ] >> maren: detention for all of you. this is actually the perfect night for me to be doing my first late night monologue. because it's "national tell a joke day." then again, every day is national tell a joke day if you're my dad talking to the waitstaff at a restaurant. [ laughter ] guillermo, you're a dad, right? >> guillermo: yes. >> maren: what's your favorite joke? >> guillermo: okay. my favorite joke is four mexicans in a car. who's driving? >> maren: who? >> guillermo: the police.

[ laughter ] sadly, this next one is not a joke. a local news anchor in milwaukee, wisconsin quoted the lyrics to one of my songs live on the air. well, sort of. >> to put it shortly, the reason why we had such unprecedented conditions was it's almost a perfect storm of conditions. you have to look down into the soil. the roots. also the drought. you can all blame that together. i'll have more details on that forecast and i'll nerd out a little bit less coming up later in the show. >> all right. i didn't know you'd go that deep with it. but thank you. i'll just quote maren morris. if the house don't fall if the roots are strong. i think. i might have butchered that. [ cheers and applause ] hi. how are you, willie? >> i'm great. how are you doing? >> maren: i'm good. it's so good to see you. i miss texas. i'm jealous that you're there right now. >> yeah. it's great. it's a little warm. but you know, i like it that way. >> maren: yeah. well, i just -- i'm so happy you're here. you're actually my first ever guest to interview while hosting this. so thank you for breaking the ice with me. [ cheers and applause ] i remember i actually met you for the first time at the maui songwriters festival a couple years ago very briefly at danny's house. and it was just such an amazing night because you got up and played with lucas and micah and i remember steven tyler got up and played. it was sort of like living in a -- an lsd trip of some sort. [ laughter ] but such a beautiful place.

so how many -- i know that you've had this weekly poker night going for quite a long time, especially on maui. and you have a few guests that are regulars. woody harrelson is one of them. how many years have you played each other? >> oh, i don't know. 20, 30 years probably. >> wow. that is incredible. and i read in your book over here on the plane that you actually mentioned woody's wing in your house. why do you call it that? did he like move in with you or something? [ laughter ] >> well, you know, we play poker until late, you know. and usually, if he's $100 down, he wants to spend the night so he can start over again the next day. [ laughter ] >> i also read that owen wilson and woody have lost so much money to you over the years that you've also dedicated that wing to the house because they helped pay for it. [ laughter ] >> well, that's a good story.

[ laughter ] >> maren: okay. i love it. i actually opened for you a couple years ago at santa barbara bowl and it was just such an amazing night. and you got all the openers up afterwards to sing "on the road again" as your last song. and i kind of learned when i was on stage just on your stage that you don't really keep a set list. you have a clock on stage that tells you how much time you have left and then i actually -- this is creepy, and i apologize. but i kept what you did have as a set list and this is what it looks like. [ laughter ] i love that you don't have any list of songs, you just kind of go at random and your band just follows you. i think that's amazing. >> well, it's easy to do because i know all the songs. the band knows them forward and backward. and it would be almost

impossible to throw them a curve because we've played together so much, they know what i'm going to do. it's just pretty easy to do it without a real set list. >> maren: yeah, i'm sure. so i actually had a baby recently, or in the last year. and i know that you've brought your children out on the road for years as you've toured. do you have any advice for bringing a baby on a tour bus and what that might look like? [ laughter ] >> well, you know, all my career i've had kids on the bus. they grow up, you know, to be pickers themselves, and most of them have wound up out on the stage with me singing with me every night. so it's just really been a big, you know, joy to have your kids with you, especially when you're gone as much as i am gone. >> right. no, i love so much that you've incorporated and just collaborated with them over the years.

lucas has always been so lovely to me when we're out on the same festivals together. so you've raised them right. i'll just take it from you, however you brought those boys up. [ cheers and applause ] so in your book you wrote a letter to young songwriters, amongst other things that we'll get to later. but you said to the young songwriters, quit while you're ahead. which i loved. >> that's easier said than done. being an old poker player, i know that don't always happen. [ laughter ] >> maren: right. and i also love that you said if you quit that easily, you didn't deserve that talent to begin with. which is also an amazing piece of advice. [ laughter ] just keep going. one of my favorite parts of the book, and it's all letters to -- you write letters to your children. you write letters to america. but my favorite line from the book just as a texan is your letter to covid.

[ cheers and applause ] >> that's pretty much the way we feel about it down here. >> maren: yeah. same. i know i live in tennessee now but i'll always be a texas girl at heart. and you are such a heartbeat of that -- of my upbringing. and until now. so thank you so much. and i know you've had such an illustrious career, you've crossed so many genres. the highwaymen, ray charles. you've just done so many incredible things in your career. and i am just like fan girling right now. but i know that you also have your cannabis line, willie's reserve. and they have been kind enough to send us goodies anytime i've played red rocks in the past. they've helped us out for sure. i had an idea, though, if you ever do collaborations on a strain because i would call my

[ laughter ] takes me out of it when i see it.pyou know, there was a part the show. i did a lot of meta acting. and there's a scene where my character talks to the main girl and she says that she has big hands. and i spend a lot of time with people with big hands to be able to kind of bring the real out of the scene. going to grocery stores, let me take -- you know, at the counter. "let me take a look at those guys." and if they had small guys i'd do a loop around. [ laughter ] oh, my god. >> aren: that's true method. you found big-handed people. >> yeah. oh, wow. and they're not everywhere. >> maren: do you think that had anything to -- do you think you doing that deep in-depth research is how "hacks" got 15 emmy nominations? [ cheers and applause ] she's literally amazing. grew up watching her make little sketches with her sisters all the time. and i think that made me and my siblings and cousins always want to make videos. and my dad is a tattoo artist in cleveland. and i actually do have -- it's called voodoo monkey tattoo. named after my sister. kidding. [ laughter ] and me and my sister recently got matching tattoos from my dad. and i'll show you. >> maren: okay. >> it's not too high up. it's a "v" with a wolf's head. look at that thigh on the camera. it's hard to show. but there it is. >> maren: what is it? >> it's a bee with a wolf head on it.pand we always say honey time. so we wanted to get a bee tattoo. and my sister was like, well, my

[ applause ] yep. i've always wanted to ask andy cohen this too when i've done his show. like how do you land on the tag lines? >> you know, i don't know. it's so silly. with this one i said i can't -- you know, i bring manners, i hope. but the exquisite derriere part, at my house, i don't know if your house is like mine, we were not allowed to say like naughty things. >> maren: yeah. >> like butt. [ laughter ] that's a big one. and i was a dancer. so we were always talking about the derriere and lift the derriere. so i thought well, i can say derriere. >> maren: it's classy. i loved it. but still southern. have any of those southern sensibilities rubbed off on the others on the show?

>> well, you know, i -- yeah. i've noticed a few things. the place cards. they've come into play. my first season, no place cards. i didn't know where to sit, where to go. nothing. and so now all of a sudden there's place cards. i'm like -- because it doesn't suit you sometimes. now they are telling you where to sit. and i'm like, oh. >> maren: you don't want to be told. >> yeah. sometimes you're like okay, i've got to go sit by that person and it's going to be fun. so i've seen that one. that's the biggest one i think. but i love it. i love place cards. >> maren: i do too. and i feel like as a true southern girl if you say anything mean you can just follow it with "bless your heart" and it's your get out of jail free card. [ laughter ] >> yeah. >> maren: so you have been living in kyle richards' old house. >> i have. >> maren: you have a housewife as your landlord. how has that been? >> you know what, it's actually been great because -- well, she was so sweet because the sale of my house went really fast, so i

needed a place to live really quickly. and i needed a place to live that allowed my three children, my four dogs, my three cats and camera crew. so that's tough. >> maren: and that house has definitely had that. >> yeah. that house was seasoned for it. so it was easy. but i'm leaving soon. i think she's ready for me to go. >> maren: oh, you're about to move into your new house. >> i am. finally. >> maren: so are you going to get your security deposit back from kyle? [ laughter ] >> kyle did not make me give a security deposit. >> maren: she better not have. >> i think she trusted me. >> maren: well, your face roller survived the move. >> the face roller comes with me everywhere. >> maren: i love it. >> just in case of an emergency you've just got to roll it out. roll it out. >> maren: probably one of the best memes of the season is you on a boat -- >> i know. but it was so honest. honestly -- well, one, i was like i keep crying and i know my face is going to look so swollen. i'll just roll it out.

and it also gives you a moment just to think. just think. [ laughter ] >> maren: yeah. well, i just over the last few episodes, i have loved how you have just taken such a stand on what you will and will not be public and present for. because it's a dicey situation. and obviously i'm a viewer, i'm watching it as a fan, i'm not going through it, i don't have friendships with all of these women. i just love that you've been so intelligent and really heartfelt in your way of saying i'm not doing this. >> well, right. i think if you're watching, up to this point you know that i'm asking some questions, i want to get the girls together. and you know, there's no malintent. it's not like anything bad about erika. it's just me wanting to ask some questions. that's it. >> maren: no, we all want to know. but do you think she'll be on next season? >> god knows. i mean, will i?

who knows? we don't know these things. >> maren: i'm telling you, andy cohen, put her on next season, please. you are so fun to watch. >> oh, thank you. >> maren: and i know it gets really tense on the show. i have not been on it, but after watching this long it's been tense. how do you unwind after a stressful encounter and you know you're being filmed? >> yeah, well, vodka is always helpful. [ laughter ] that's a good thing. but you know, my mother is a good call away. my sister-in-law is great. family is good. but my mother really -- she's a psychotherapist. so every now and then i'll call her when it's really, really tense. >> maren: your mother's a psychotherapist? >> she is. >> maren: that's amazing. so much is making sense now. [ laughter ] >> so yes. i'm very like therapized. i'll call her if it gets really tough. my mother has tough love. we're southern. i don't know if your mother is tough love.
