weekend as the kaldore fire isn't finished yet. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm on a date favorable conditions are helping firefighters on the front lines containment has ticked up to 32% the fire grew only slightly today the total size now passing 213,000 acres and some people are returning home abc 7 news reporter kate larsen is tracking the progress tonight kate. well, you know alma 32% fire containment is significant. certainly good news, but i also spoke to a firefighter tonight who's on the front line, and he said they are weeks from wrapping up the colder fire and a shift in weather conditions for the worst could reverse all their progress. wind gusts fanning new flames at caples lake campground north of kirkwood ski resort and they're looking for spot fires jumping out half a mile to a mile from the this fire activity. it's taken place but cooler more humid conditions mean the colder fires grove has slope increasing black containment. means on the western side and that represents all the hard

this is the kind of work that has firefighters frustrated sudden hot spots popping up like this keeping them busy with the winds that have been coming off the canyons. we're seeing embers that are moving up to three quarters of a mile in indie direction weather and fire potential all way into the question of off lake tahoe and this region might open up again to 50,000 evacuees first. i'll need to stop out all the neighborhood hot spots fell dangerous trees check power and utilities all of that needs to be checked in addition to the fire behavior itself. so even when firefighters describe this as a day for mop up as they did and even if trends look good. no as they say the calendar fire is not yet over. and that is where we stand tonight. a holiday weekend when south lake tahoe and this restaurant behind us would normally be filled with people. when will they return we still don't know? in south lake tahoe wayne

freedman abc 7 news new at 11 cal fire gave us this behind the scenes look at the teamwork. it takes to fight these large fires. it's a group effort. not only on front lines, but for the situation unit putting together the maps for the daily brief as well. now smoke from the wildfires burn. our north still drifting into the bay area. maybe you've noticed this video from our tower cameras earlier today shows the layer of hays stretching from san francisco to oakland very clear in those images abc 7 news meteorologist sandy patel keeping a very close eye on the air quality and whether it's going to improve sandia over the labor day weekend, dan it is not going to improve but let me just show you what it looks like right now moderate air quality here across most of the bay area. that's how it was today as you look at the smoke forecast. we're going to continued to see the impacts of those wildfires burning to our north with the air quality being impacted still some hays the good news is most of that will be in the upper layers of the atmosphere. so not exceeding federal health

standards, but if you are sensitive to smoke limit your outdoor time a live look from our exploratorium camera. we do have an air quality advisory through monday through labor day. so moderate for the next four days, even though that advisory expires on monday. i want to show you a time lapse layers of fog and and smoke up above very clear here. i'll be back to tell you about the heat for the weekend coming right up amma. alright, thank you, sandia developing news now at stanford where hundreds of resident assistants also known as ras are on strike. they're in charge of keeping dormitories safe, but tonight they say their safety isn't being prioritized abc 7 news reporter lose pain. yes spoke to several ras who are part of the group asking for higher pay and better covid guidelines. less than two weeks before stanford university students. go back to campus hundreds of ras are refusing to work unless they're demands are met stafford is currently paying ras about 3,800 for every single quarter

they can close them five freshmen were like, um transported via hospital because of alcohol posting because of this new policy regarding the strikes stanford university said in part, budgeting has allocated an additional 2.3 million dollars a year for residential students staff pay in the coming weeks. we will continue to work with students under questions and concerns as we prepare to welcome students back to campus but these students say they're not backing down. how long is this strike going to go for and so stanford university has reached the demands that we posted in palo alto luz pena abc 7 news. and uptick in covid-19 hospitalizations in the central valley has triggered the state's surge protocol for icu capacity the san joaquin valley region is made up of 12 counties including fresno were said and kern counties. the search protocol is activated when less than 10% of icu beds

weekend looks fantastic. we have a nice variety of weather coming your way. i do want to show you a from earlier tonight mount tamkam. well, it was hard to miss the haze and the air laying right above the fog layer. the fog layer has compressed tonight. it was a little bit warmer today. we're going into even warmer weather for the upcoming holiday weekend want to show you the smoke from the wildfires. you can see those smoke right around northwestern california the northern portion the eastern portion of the state and some of that smoke just coming right into our region, which is why we were seeing it and our air quality is being impacted it is moderate across most of the bay area. it's worse as you will notice near the caldorf fire where it is unhealthy and even parts of the northwest, california coastline looking at unhealthy air quality. the good thing is because of lighter winds crews have been making progress and i think the weather is going to cooperate for them as you take a look at the smoke forecast. it's going to be still smokey right near the fire zonre yo will notice

air quality tomorrow afternoon because the sgoing into sunday s well might be a little bit heavier a sunday morning. now if you're going to bottle rock in napa valley, we're looking at really nice weather mid to upper 80s saturday and sunday hazy skies though low 50s in the morning best to take that sunscreen. you might need a baseball cap as well as you take a look at the giants and dodgers forecast at oracle park tomorrow night 63 degrees dropping down to about 57 so it should be comfortable weather. for that game now looking at live doppler 7 right now. we do have some fog near the coastline. it's really not going to go very far. maybe just locally or across the bay and that's about it tomorrow morning temperatures right now in the 50s and 60s sfo camera showing you a very shallow marine layer right now, and here's a look at the forecast hazy skies through labor day. it's sizzling summer heat inland at cooler weather on tuesday now cooling tomorrow morning down to the 40s 50s fog will be right around the coast.
