are returning home abc 7 news reporter kate larsen is tracking the progress tonight kate. well, you know alma 32% fire containment is significant. certainly good news, but i also spoke to a firefighter tonight who's on the front line, and he said they are weeks from wrapping up the colder fire and a shift in weather conditions for the worst could reverse all their progress. wind gusts fanning new flames at caples lake campground north of kirkwood ski resort and they're looking for spot fires jumping out half a mile to a mile from the this fire activity. it's taken place but cooler more humid conditions mean the colder fires grove has slope increasing black containment. means on the western side and that represents all the hard work that the firefighters on the ground have gone through to get there and that and that's getting us back to that repopulation evacuation orders have been lifted for many neighborhoods in the yellow zone, but just because you get released back doesn't mean that we're we're scott free fire marshall air gave vaunts is the caples lake and e.

and fire potential all way into the question of off lake tahoe and this region might open up again to 50,000 evacuees first. i'll need to stop out all the neighborhood hot spots fell dangerous trees check power and utilities all of that needs to be checked in addition to the fire behavior itself. so even when firefighters describe this as a day for mop up as they did and even if trends look good. no as they say the calendar fire is not yet over. and that is where we stand tonight. a holiday weekend when south lake tahoe and this restaurant behind us would normally be filled with people. when will they return we still don't know? in south lake tahoe wayne freedman abc 7 news new at 11 cal fire gave us this behind the scenes look at the teamwork. it takes to fight these large fires. it's a group effort. not only on front lines, but for the situation unit putting together the maps for the daily brief as well.

now smoke from the wildfires burn. our north still drifting into the bay area. maybe you've noticed this video from our tower cameras earlier today shows the layer of hays stretching from san francisco to oakland very clear in those images abc 7 news meteorologist sandy patel keeping a very close eye on the air quality and whether it's going to improve sandia over the labor day weekend, dan it is not going to improve but let me just show you what it looks like right now moderate air quality here across most of the bay area. that's how it was today as you look at the smoke forecast. we're going to continued to see the impacts of those wildfires burning to our north with the air quality being impacted still some hays the good news is most of that will be in the upper layers of the atmosphere. so not exceeding federal health standards, but if you are sensitive to smoke limit your outdoor time a live look from our exploratorium camera. we do have an air quality advisory through monday through labor day. so moderate for the next four days, even though that advisory expires on monday. i want to show you a time lapse layers of fog and and smoke up

above very clear here. i'll be back to tell you about the heat for the weekend coming right up amma. alright, thank you, sandia developing news now at stanford where hundreds of resident assistants also known as ras are on strike. they're in charge of keeping dormitories safe, but tonight they say their safety isn't being prioritized abc 7 news reporter lose pain. yes spoke to several ras who are part of the group asking for higher pay and better covid guidelines. less than two weeks before stanford university students. go back to campus hundreds of ras are refusing to work unless they're demands are met stafford is currently paying ras about 3,800 at stafford university is about 18,000. so if you do a math is not enough. no, we're essentially paying the work. we spoke to choose stanford our race who asked to remain anonymous in fear of retali. and are you scared? are you doing this?

you're speaking out absolutely as a student. i'm very very fearful because i'm only one piece and stanford. is this huge elite institution the strike comes several days after at least one of the ras tested positive for covid-19 following an indoor in person training event. they packed us all into like a 500 person auditorium and a couple days later. we found out that a student actually was covid even though all stanford students are mandated to be fully vaccinated this group of ras once more covid safety guidelines and to move their training sessions online. they're also asking for the reversal of an alcohol policy where students used to drink with their doors open, but now they can close them five freshmen were like, um transported via hospital because of alcohol posting because of this new policy regarding the strikes stanford university said in part, budgeting has allocated an additional 2.3 million

dollars a year for residential students staff pay in the coming weeks. we will continue to work with students under questions and concerns as we prepare to welcome students back to campus but these students say they're not backing down. how long is this strike going to go for and so stanford university has reached the demands that we posted in palo alto luz pena abc 7 news. and uptick in covid-19 hospitalizations in the central valley has triggered the state's surge protocol for icu capacity the san joaquin valley region is made up of 12 counties including fresno were said and kern counties. the search protocol is activated when less than 10% of icu beds are available for three days. it allows for regional hospitals to transfer patients to and beds where available concern is high about the potential for a new nationwide covid surge over the labor day holiday the us recorded its 22nd consecutive day with more than 100,000 new

weekend looks fantastic. we have a nice variety of weather coming your way. i do want to show you a from earlier tonight mount tamkam. well, it was hard to miss the haze and the air laying right above the fog layer. the fog layer has compressed tonight. it was a little bit warmer today. we're going into even warmer weather for the upcoming holiday weekend want to show you the smoke from the wildfires. you can see those smoke right around northwestern california the northern portion the eastern portion of the state and some of that smoke just coming right into our region, which is why we were seeing it and our air quality is being impacted it is moderate across most of the bay area. it's worse as you will notice near the caldorf fire where it is unhealthy and even parts of the northwest, california coastline looking at unhealthy air quality. the good thing is because of lighter winds crews have been making progress and i think the weather is going to cooperate for them as you take a look at the smoke forecast. it's going to be still smokey right near the fire zones here in the bay area. you will notice some moderate

air quality tomorrow afternoon because the smoke and the haze continue to impact. going into sunday morning as well might be a little bit heavier a sunday morning. now if you're going to bottle rock in napa valley, we're looking at really nice weather mid to upper 80s saturday and sunday hazy skies though low 50s in the morning best to take that sunscreen. you might need a baseball cap as well as you take a look at the giants and dodgers forecast at oracle park tomorrow night 63 degrees dropping down to about 57 so it should be comfortable weather. for that game now looking at live doppler 7 right now. we do have some fog near the coastline. it's really not going to go very far. maybe just locally or across the bay and that's about it tomorrow morning temperatures right now in the 50s and 60s sfo camera showing you a very shallow marine layer right now, and here's a look at the forecast hazy skies through labor day. it's sizzling summer heat inland mild at the coast. we're looking at cooler weather on tuesday now cooling tomorrow morning down to the 40s 50s fog will be right around the coast.

a top chef alum shares his favorite dish. barbecue sauce that gives back. but first, up close with sharks. ♪ >> sharks are feared. i think it's because of the unknown. when you're in the water, you can't see what's under, what's beneath you. so that's all that myth and the mythology that surrounds the shark attack. ♪ there's over 500 species of shark. the diversity is incredible, and only a few of those have any kind of encounter with humans. and of the ones that have encountered with humans, only and handful of species are actually dangerous. so, nothing to be afraid of. so, the california academy of sciences is a natural history museum in golden gate park. it's one of the largest natural history museums in the country, and we have beautiful public exhibits. we have a nice scientific research component to it. it's a marvelous place to visit.

so, we're at the sharks exhibit, our newest exhibit at the academy, and it's a fantastic exhibit. you're gonna learn a lot about 20 or 30 species of shark, but there's many more out there. it's gonna pique your curiosity. so, as you walk in, there's two different things you're gonna see. one is really immersive video. so you're gonna almost feel like you're diving with the sharks. and another one is shark life-size models. so, there's shark models that's the exact size of shark, so you're gonna have a really good idea of how big those sharks are and what they look like underwater. ♪ sharks are very important for the ecosystem. they are in the top of the food chain, so they are what we call top predators. so, that way, they control everything else below them in the food chain. so, they eat the large fish. the large fish eat the smaller fish. the smaller fish eat the smaller fish. so, if we remove the sharks, there is going to be an imbalance in the food chain in the whole ecosystem, and then things are gonna get out of whack. we are gonna either too much kelp or too much urchins or not

enough kelp or not enough urchins because there's not enough predators around. so, sharks are very important in any ecosystem they occupy. sharks are extremely intelligent animals. they are not going after humans for food. they know that humans are not food, for the most part. when attacks do happen, it's for two main reasons. it's either because they're mistaken -- if it's murky water with a lot of waves. that's why you hear about sharks attacking surfers -- because, usually, in places where surfers surf, the waves are breaking. the water's really murky, and the sharks attack by mistake. the other one is when people are trying to feed them or trying to interact with them in some way. but most of the time -- i think 90% of the encounters with sharks -- you are not even going to see the shark. the sharks are gonna see you. they're gonna turn around and swim out. there's a video of my team -- we're diving in an island in brazil -- and there's this huge, like, 20-foot-long shark -- six-gill shark -- that comes right above our heads and then swims off. and neither one of us saw it. the only person that saw it was the guy that was filming. all of the other divers in the

dive never even saw the shark. it just swam away. it didn't bother us. we didn't bother it. ♪ so, when people think about sharks as dangerous animals, as i said earlier, sharks attack only one or two people per year, at the very most. but we humans -- we kill over 70 million sharks per year. so, if there's anything that's dangerous, it's us to sharks. not the other way around. that's either bycatch -- so, as humans, we don't really go to the fish market and look for sharks. it's not something very popular that we do. so, the sharks that are caught, it's either by bycatch -- so they're accidentally caught when they're fishing for something else -- or they are caught for their fins, which is a very detrimental practice because it's really easy to overfish shark when you're fishing for their fins. they don't need refrigeration. you can stay a long time at sea just killing the sharks, taking their fins out, and then tossing
