moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> smoke from wildfires continue to drift into the bay area. it comes after a steer clear of south lake tahoe as the fire isn't finished yet. good morning. you are watching abc 7 news. you are watching abc 7 news, live on abc 7, hulu live, and wherever you stream. i am amanda. let's start with a look at the weather and how the fires are impacting the air quality. good morning. lisa: we have low along the shoreline. that is producing some visibility issues. you can see how it is moved along the san mateo coast into

oakland. we have five mile visibility. down through sand carlos and san jose, there is a look at san francisco. moderate air quality will take us through the holiday weekend. we will have some of that wildfire smoke as we go through the next several hours. notice the blue and green shaded around the bay area. that indicates the hazy conditions throughout the day. we have very little change. we have a building ridge of high pressure. that is going to aid in our warm up. it is 54 in san mateo. as we look at our 24 hour temperature change, it is six degrees cooler due to that marine layer. we will go hazy today. as we go through the afternoon, upper 70's. the 90's will be arriving at. it's a warm up and we will tell you when the warmest day will be

and project our cool down in a few minutes. amanda: favorable conditions are helping firefighters on the front lines. containment has gone up to 32%. the fire grew only slightly yesterday. some people are returning home. kate larsen is tracking the progress. kate: flames at the campground north of the ski resort. >> we are looking for spot fires jumping out from this activity. kate: more humid conditions mean the growth has slowed. increasing containment lines on the western side. >> that represents all the hard work the firefighters have gone through to get there. that is getting us back to that repopulation. kate: evacuation orders a been lifted for many in the yellow zone. >> it doesn't mean we are scot-free.

kate: the echo lake area continues to be a challenge. >> the fire moved pretty rapidly through that area. some cabins were lost. many of the historic cabins were saved. kate: a massive base camp set up in the heavenly ski resort, 4600 firefighters are on the fire. how is morale right now? >> i think there is fatigue with the firefighters. there have been a lot of fires burning. they've been moved around. some of these guys haven't been home for weeks, going on months. kate: full containment isn't expected until the end of september. tahoe is usually bustling, now covered in a haze. many businesses are closed. a few people did is sneak in a swim, despite the coast guard asking everyone to avoid

activities on lake tahoe. >> we know people love lake tahoe. now is not the time to come. kate: the fire clearance that so many have done has saved many homes from the fire. fire fighters are grateful for everyone's support, especially hotels of have been housing them. i am kate larsen. amanda: as they march into lake tahoe, more help could be on the way from residents who a been forced to leave. a federal major -- alert -- major disaster declaration has been approved by president biden earlier this week. wayne freedman spent yesterday on the front line. he has more from south lake tahoe. wayne: the immediate future of what happens in south lake tahoe.

>> you come to tahoe for clear air. wayne: it depends on the mountains, the caldor fire still burns. it threatens less as calfire takes nothing for granted. >> this is not over. >> this isn't the end. it's not the beginning of the end. it's the end of the beginning. wayne: we found optimism as forest service crews cleared trees along highways to broaden fire breaks. >> it seems like the fire is running out of fuel in some areas. wayne: especially in the heavy backcountry, this is the kind of work that has firefighters frustrated. keeping them busy. >> the winds of been coming off the canyons. embers are moving three quarters of a mile in any direction. wayne: whether in fire potential play into the question of when the region might open up again to 50,000 evacuees. they will need to stop the

are on strike. they are in charge of keeping dorms safe. they say their safety is not prioritized. we spoke with several ra's who are part of the group asking for higher pay and better covid guidelines. >> less than two weeks before students go back to campus, hundreds are refusing to work unless their demands are met. >> they pay quarter. room and board at stanford is about $18,000. you can do the math. it's not enough. we are paying to work. >> they asked to remain anonymous. >> are you scared? >> absolute. as a student, i'm very focused. stanford is a huge institution. it >> the strike comes after at least one of the ra's tested

positive for covid-19 following an indoor in person training event. >> they practice into a 500 person auditorium. -- packed us into a 500 person torrent. we found out a student was positive. >> this group once more safet guidelines into move their training sessions online. they are asking for the reversal of an alcohol policy where students used to drink with doors open. now, they can close them. >> five freshmen were transferred because of alcohol portioning -- poisoning. >> stanford said the budgeting is allocated an additional $2.3 million a year for residential student staff pay. we will continue to work with students on their questions and concerns as we welcome students back to campus.

surge over the labor day holiday, the u.s. had its 22nd consecutive day of more than 100,000 new daily cases. vaccination numbers continue to tick up. 1.4 million vaccine doses were administered in 24 hours, including 550 thousand newly vaccinated people. there are reports the biden administration will delay the deadline to start offering boosters. this comes asthma dharna announced it has finished submitting its data on boosters to the fda. food concession workers at oracle park will take a strike vote as the giants are in the middle of a series against the dodgers. the union claims at least 20 workers have come down with covid this year. the union is demanding be paid

expanding as we approach the recall election. san mateo county will open at 9:00 this morning. santa clara will open 19 voting centers. you can vote at san francisco city hall at 10:00. if you've registered to vote, you will get a vote by mail ballot. if you haven't registered, you can still vote by doing a conditional registration. the election is september 14. starting today, rail service on the blue line it to the children's discovery museum will return. the green lied -- line is coming back. the orange line returned just in time for the final 49 his preseason game. the oakland police department is stepping up its response to illegal sideshow activity. the contingent of police will be

looking ating ating ating atingt napa, 86 today. lows drop off to around 50. there should be some nice relief with upper 80's for the second half of the weekend. the warmth will be around 100 degrees as you head inland tomorrow by the delta. it will be 98 in livermore. looking at temperatures in the upper 70's to near 80's as you get toward the bayshore. by monday, it is still warm out there. we could see a few degrees of cooling as we get toward a stronger sea breeze in the afternoon. by tuesday, things really cool off. it will be 86 in napa, 96 in livermore. it will be 70 downtown. it will be 67 and half moon bay. look for 85 in san jose. we've got the 60's, 80 around
