it is saturday, september 4. you are watching abc 7 news, live on abc seven, hulu live, and wherever you stream. i am amanda del castillo in for liz kreutz. here is lisa argen. good morning. lisa: good morning, amanda. they are impacting us. you may have noticed the haze the past few days and over the weekend as that onshore flow backs off. we have a marine layer. you can see live doppler 7 with three quarters of the mile visibility into the north bay with about a quarter-mile in napa. five miles in oakland. fog first. as it clears, we are under the haze. the blue and green shading today will take it into sunday. no changes so that air quality advisory lasting through monday labor day. looking outside now, you will notice we have the fog. moderate air quality the next few days, and as we look at current numbers, cool.

castro valley 49. 54 in oakland with fog in the north bay. temperatures cooler this morning then yesterday due to the compressed marine layer, but we do an about-face as numbers warm up today. 90's arriving inland. this is your 4:00 reading, but through the day, we warm up. by 4:00, we are still in the 90's, meaning temperature surpassed the mid-90's today in inland valleys. near 80 around the bay. we will talk about how long the warmth last, especially through the weekend, coming up. amanda: thank you. favorable conditions are helping firefighters on the front lines of the caldor fire. containment has gone up to 32%. the fire crew made progress only slightly yesterday. some people are returning home. kate larsen is tracking the progress. kate: wind gusts spanning new flames at the campground north of kirkwood ski resort.

>> they are looking for spot fires jumping out half a mile from the activity taking place. kate: but cooler, more humid conditions means the growth has slowed, increasing containment lines on the west side. >> that represents all the hard work firefighters on the ground have gone through to get there. and that is getting us back to that repopulation. kate: evacuation orders have been lifted from any yellow zone neighborhoods. but -- >> just because you get released back does not mean we are scot-free. kate: firefighters say echo lake areas continue to be a challenge. >> the fire moved rapidly through that area. some cabins were lost, but many of the historic cabin were saved. kate: we were spoken firefighters on the caldor fire, more than 600 are on the fire. how is it right now? >> i think there is fatigue with

firefighters because there have been a lot of fires burning, and they have been moved around from several fires, so, some of these guys have not been home for weeks, going on months. kate: full containment is not expected until the end of september, but coming up sooner, labor day weekend, when lake tahoe was bustling, now covered in smoky haze and many businesses closed. a few people did sneak in a swim, despite the coast guard asking everyone to avoid all activities on lake tahoe until the fire subsides. >> we know people of lake tahoe. we feel your love from up here, but now was not the time. kate: the fire marshal wants me to clear a couple things, first, the fire clearance has saved many homes from the caldor fire. second, how grateful fire crews are for the support, asp sthake tahoe. kate larsen, abc 7 news. amanda: as firefighters marched

into evacuated communities and south lake tahoe, or could be on the way for residents forced to leave. the city manager requested a major disaster declaration from callow yes, in addition to the --caloes, in addition to the one approved by president biden this week. wayne freedman spent yesterday on the front lines and has more from south lake tahoe. wayne: the immediate future of what happens still evacuated south lake tahoe -- >> you come to tahoe for clear air. wayne: it depends on the events and surrounding areas where the caldor fire smolders and burns but threatens less as the caldor fire takes nothing for granted. >> this is not over. >> this is not the end, it is not the beginning of the end, but it is the end of the beginning. wayne: that means plenty of brden bs.nue thw t >> it seems the fires running

out of fuel in some areas. wayne: but not elsewhere, especially in the heavy backcountry and that christmas valley. this has firefighters frustrated, setting hotspots popping up, keeping them busy. >> with the winds off the canyons, we see numbers moving up to three quarters of a mile in any direction. wayne: whether in fire protection all way into the question -- weigh into the question of when this area will open up to the 50,000 evacuees. first, they will have to fell dangerous trees, check power and utilities. >> all of that has to be checked, in addition to fire behavior wayne: even when firefighters describe this as a day for a mop up and as trends look good, no, as they say, the caldor fire is not yet over new. amanda: check it out, calfire is giving us this behind-the-scenes look at the team fighting these

and an alcohol re-formation. >> five students had had poisoning because of the new policy. luz: stanford university said in part, "university budgeting allocated an additional $2.3 million a year for residential assistant student staff pay. we will continue to work with students on their questions and concerns as we prepare to welcome students back to campus." but students say they are not backing down. how long is this strike going to go for? >> until stanford university has reached the demands we posted. luz: in palo alto, luz peãa, abc 7 news. amanda: an uptick in hospitalizations has triggered the state protocol for ic capacity. the san joaquin valley region is made up of 12 counties, including fresno, merced and kern county. it is activated when less than

in their plan to not only replace the native trees lost in the glencoe fire, but the doubletree count. the treeplanting event is happening thanks to the arbor day foundation. a new plan is in the works to prevent flooding in san francisco's low-lying neighborhoods. the san francisco bay region monitor quality control board agreed on a $600 pact with the city to expand the system. the expansion will prevent sewage overflows and the plan still needs approval from the board of supervisors and the mayor. it could take seven years to complete. let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen, checking the forecast. i know we just talked about those flooding in low-lying neighborhoods, but we do not expect to see rain anytime soon. lisa: some of them go out about two weeks and there are signs as things are a ld tthe north or subtropical moisture to the

south becomes more likely, and we are certainly seeing the longer nights out there. that has allowed for the cooling and compressed marine layer, allowing for the fog to be present in the north bay from santa rosa, down through san francisco, san mateo, and around 580 in oakland and emeryville this morning. visibility three quarters of a mile. napa, santa rosa, five miles. and oakland, and better yet the south bay. here's a look at the sba center. it is 53 and a and. 57 in san jose. i'm 53 in pacific. sutro showing us a deck of low clouds at maybe 700 feet in spots. 50 santa rosa. 48 in napa. 40's towards the east bay, so longer nights allow for more cooling. 55 in livermore. current air quality is moderate.

abortion after six weeks and allows private citizens to sue anyone who helps a woman obtain abortion services. yesterday, a court in texas granted a restraining order, limiting that ability. the law took effect on the first of september and was signed in may by governor abbott. >> our creator endowed us with the right to life, and, yet, millions of children lose their life every year because of abortions. amanda: days following the supreme court's decision not to block the law, some out-of-state organizations have been aborted with calls for help. what you are about to hear about from the menendez is a type of -- from a reporter is a type of underground railroad for reproductive freedom. >> texas losses anyone can sue another person for anyone helping a woman get an abortion after six weeks. >> in california, we already have appointments set for next week for folks coming here. >> states like oklahoma,

i am larry beil. amanda: checking the bay area forecast with lisa argen. good morning. good day for a ballgame? lisa: yeah, 6:05, temperatures in the mid-60's at the ballpark, and those winds out of the west, northwest at 14 miles an hour and numbers dropping through the 60's. a great evening, typical in san francisco and of the low clouds and fog this morning from bring county to san mateo, to the east bay. this is a nice site to see. a cold front moving into the pacific northwest, so it must be changing seasons about now. right on cue, so into september, looking at a cold front that hopefully in the weeks ahead ships to the south and brings us wetter patterns around the bay. zero mile visibility in napa, three quarters of a mile in santa rosa, five in oakland, but the fog lifts and a gorgeous view. you can see mount diablo,

sunshine coming up, and a layer of low clouds. temperatures warm as high pressure pushes down on the atmosphere. 90's for many cities in the east bay valleys. if downtown. 57 mt. view. 53 and pacifica. mount tam in the 70's. a warm day with 10 degrees warming from san rafael to santa rosa. 50 right now in santa rosa with fog. 53 by the delta. air quality moderate. it stays moderate through the weekend. you will have some of that haze at seven and we have a layer near surface smoke. then we get to high clouds the second half of the weekend, but in the sierra nevada, it remains unhealthy with hazardous conditions. here is a look at zephyr cove, where you can barely see across the lake. hazy skies through labor day. sizzling summer heat. 100 inland tomorrow.
