demanding better working conditions with that. we say good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dionne lin. you're watching abc 7 news at 11:00 live here on abc 7 and wherever you stream tonight. we are hearing from some workers and representatives abc 7 news reporter tim johns was at the stadium today and he has this story new at 11. amid one of the most intense rivalries and major league baseball between the giants and the dod the hometown team is facing the possibility of a double header in hard-fought battles. yes, i'm will concerned about it saturday night nearly 1,000 food concession workers at oracle park voted overwhelmingly to authorize their unions to go on strike concession workers say they want things like access to better health insurance higher wages and more covid safety protocols among other things the workers say they haven't gotten a pay raise in three years and many feel unsafe doing their jobs. after 20 of their colleagues contracted covid since the start

of this season, we feel like we we're not protected. it's no shield. no, nothing. the employees are demanding better contracts from their employer bon appetit, but their union president and odd singh says, it's really the giants who hold most of the cards and that's up to them to provide improved working conditions many. workers have worked you know for the ballpark for decades some of them go back to candlestick the candlestick days sing believes the giants have a responsibility to step up to the plate and says most of what's being asked for is modest for a franchise as well off as the mlb team. it's a sentiment that's one support from local politicians such as districts. it's supervisor matt haney who was on site for the workers vote saturday night, and i know that this place doesn't operate without the workers. they're the ones who make place run they serve the food. they are really what bring the spirit to the stadium but with negotiations beginning this week singh says he's hoping both sides can come to an agreement

soon. there's an opportunity here for you know the employer to come to the table and do right and for the giants to come to the table and address our concerns and do right by these workers in san francisco tim johns abc 7 news. now the giants responded to today's strike vote in a statement. it reads quote bon appetit management company and local 2 are currently engaged in collective bargaining negotiations. we encourage both sides to work productively to reach an agreement as soon as possible the giants make the health and safety of everyone working and visiting oracle park a top priority. we operate our venue in compliance with local and state health requirements and quote. well smoke from wildfires burning to our north is affecting air quality here in the bay area that smoke is expected to increase small buildup prompting a spare the air alert for tomorrow for instance in glass. in for drew tonight tracking those conditions and francis things are going to be heating up as well. yeah along with high pressure comes a heat and also the hazy

throughout our fire coverage now if you use your cell phone camera, you can scan it and it'll take you to the abc 7 wildfire tracker. that's where you can get details on the major wildfires burning in the state. we will show you this again at 135 so be sure to grab your phone and we'll walk you through it then. well that fire has burned more than 214,000 acres so far but containment jumped from 37% this morning to that 43% this evening some evacuation orders have been lifted on the western flank and on the eastern flank cal fire credit. there for allowing firefighters to gain some ground on containment. we had in very fortunate the last couple days with some mitigating weather for allow our firefighters to really take some aggressive approach to trying to reach our containment objectives. calmer wind speeds have slowed the spread of the cal. fire meantime evacuees are anxiously waiting all of the all-clear signs to return to their homes reporters sebastian

robertson spoke to some south lake tahoe residents who are waiting for more good news. this is driving down highway 50 guided by the light of a dark orange sky. well, it's seven o'clock at night. and it looks like it's night time. so it was pretty eerie. it was pretty sickening. really richard and carolina matera captured this cell phone video of their drive out of south lake tahoe video. they're sharing with us from a red cross shelter in reno. oh, it's a terrible feeling, you know, you don't know if you're gonna return i don't know what to bring red cross volunteers turning the reno sparks convention center into a temporary evacuation shelter, and this is just one of many cities across the region hosting kaldor fire evacuees. like i have no family, so i'm very attached to my pet and when you get that taken away, it's quite a jolt. susan owens tells me she left her dog with a different group of volunteers in order to be

able to stay. reno shelter, this will be her sixth night away from home, and she's expecting to stay longer. i wish i knew sebastian because we don't have a clue when we're going to be able to go home for many the frustration is growing patients running out meanwhile donations keep coming in. we had a great showing of volunteers and community supports as for the materas their focusing their angst passing. the day is red cross volunteers something they've done before but never in their backyard, it's definitely a new dynamic for us because these are our neighbors and fellow citizens of celica those definitely very different than what we're used to a community that has already been hit hard. the fire has already burned a quarter of a million acres this as thousands of displaced people wait to see what it will do next. that was sebastian robertson reporting well moving on now to

california's recall election which is less than two weeks away early voting is expanding in several. bay area counties starting this weekend elections officials say voter turnout is already shaping up to be historic abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has more on this story. the drive-through lane is open at san francisco city hall. it's the first weekend. you can drop off your ballot for california's recall election. tell me why you wanted to drive down here today well for the convenience of doing it on a saturday and then just to get my vote in early. i think it's a waste of money that we're having to go. through this i feel it's really important for every vote this weekend city hall is also open for early in-person voting. this is a very strong turnout for this election elections chief john arnt says fewer voters are showing up. year, but mail-in ballots are flooding in so far 183,000 ballots have been received out of about 500,000 ballots mailed to registered voters in the city. the turnaround right now is only

abc's 7 has been working to build a better bay area by tracking how covid-19 is impacting everything from the economy to your health tonight. we're learning the viruses caused an award-winning east bay baker to lose her sense of taste and smell she is talking about her ordeal as her wildly popular restaurant in benicia. just won a prestigious award. here's abc 7 news reporter leslie, brinkley. have been lining up since 2018 when cordon bleu trained baker hannah lee pervan stopped baking bread for french laundry and set up one house bakery in downtown benicia. they stayed open with to go orders during the pandemic and helped out local food pantries, but 2021 brought another challenge. january completely lost my taste and smell i've gone from you know being able to taste of the jam

is slightly overdone by a few degrees to not being able to tell the difference between strawberries and raspberries anymore. so it's it was really heartbreaking as some smell returned. it was all wired wrong apples taste like, you know citrus and pecans taste like pears and everything tastes like burning her band said she's trying smell therapy that is using roses lavender eucalyptus and lemons every day to try to stimulate different parts of her brain. she relies on the taste buds of others on her team to keep her recipes on target still wowing her customers the fact that she can still come to work and sir people and i can't tell the difference in august one house. bakery was recognized by the state assembly as a small business of the year and pervan decided to stop publicly hiding her loss of taste. i did a post on instagram about it, and i probably 200 people said their they're going through

time we're looking from the east bay out towards bay bridge in san francisco. you seeomethog t f rr ispare the air day so minimize driving if you can't or carpool. are heading to bottle rock, so it's going to be sizzling inland. so triple digits and then mild at the coast and that's because of the debris, but we are expecting hazy skies all the way through labor day because of the wildfires and the smoke here's a forecast animation showing you the cloud cover because of the high pressure. we're going to see very minimal cloud cover and even at the beaches will get partly cloudy conditions. we will still get a little bit of a sea breeze and that's going to allow things to stay cooler at the beaches because we'll see a little bit of a northwest flow and then tomorrow afternoon the breeze will pick up at temperatures will still warm. up inland in fact highs tomorrow are going to be warmer compared to today. so it was warmer today. it's going to get hot tomorrow and that continues into monday. so if you want cooler weather

head to the coast 68 and half moon bay, san francisco 72. we'll see some upper 70s and 80s around the bay really comfortable in san mateo 81 degrees. there's also the millbury art there, but then hot and'll be hazy especially in the interior valleys and in the south bay, san jose warm. up to 88 look for low 90s in santa rosa and also in san rafael also lows tonight will drop into the mid to low 50s, especially in the north bay. so we will see that marine layer creep in overnight tomorrow morning will wake up with some cloud cover, but that will quickly dissipate to give you an idea of how warm it is going to be. here's a look at the week ahead for an example for example in livermore. our average highs 87. so we're about 10 degrees above that for the next couple days then. have a system moving through mid-week will be below average by friday and you can see that in the accuweather seven day forecast as well. so hot and hazy tomorrow with the spare alert and effect

app. basically if you scan this, it'll take you to the abc 7 wildfire tracker that will help you follow the major fires across the state and track the air quality for your neighborhood. police in south lake tahoe are dealing with a rash of bear break-ins tens of sense of people have been evacuated because of the kaldore fire now when homes are empty. there is always a risk of break-ins and looting but the burglar alarms those are being set off by bears who've been displaced by the fire. can see there they are. for food in the abandoned homes a tree planting event at cal maritime in vallejo was aimed at replacing hundreds of trees that were lost in a fast-moving wildfire. it's been almost two years since the glen cove fire. it began crossed interstate 80 and then jumped the freeway to the cal maritime campus flames came dangerously close to several buildings, but firefighters stopped the fire before it devastated the campus
