oracle park votes to strike over pandemic safety concerns and wildfire smoke is impacting air quality in the bay area. build has punted a spare the air alert. good morning. it is sunday, september 5. you are watching abc 7 news. i am kate larsen. we are going to start this hour with a look at weather with lisa arjun. i keep asking how that fog is doing today. >> certainly dense along the shoreline, but our smoke and haze could be worse. we are under a spare the air alert. with a little bit of a sea breeze yesterday, things were not so bad. you can see visibility is reduced to about a quarter of a mile, near two miles infour mesr 35 minutes. we have poor air quality in our inland, east bay, and santa clara valleys.

temperatures there will climb to well above average readings. right now, air quality is moderate around the bay, good on the peninsula and into the east bay for now. that will change. temperatures are in the mid 50's in hayward, 59 in san jose. as we go through the rest of the day, it is hazy. it is a quick warm up with near 80 or low 80's. temperatures will be in the upper 90's and lend, cool at the coast. -- inland, cool at the coast. kate: containment on the calder fire is up to 43%. we will keep this up at the bottom left of your screen through our fire coverage. use your cell phone camera to scan it. take you to the abc 7 wildfire tracker. that is where you can get details on major wildfires across the state. the caldor fire has burned more than 214,000 acres containment jumped to 43%.

evacuation orders have lifted. cal fire credits the weather for long firefighters to gain ground on containment. >> we had been fortunate -- with mitigating weather to allow an aggressive approach. kate: calfire says the fire has destroyed more than 27,000 structures -- calfire says the fire has destroyed homes. more than 27,000 structures remain threatened. construction workers at -- concession workers at oracle park voted to authorize a strike, demanding better working conditions. this is not expected to impact tonight's game. tim johns explains what could happen. tim: amid one of the most intense rivalries and major league baseball, the hometown team is facing the possibility of a doubleheader in hard-fought battles. >> i am concerned about it.

tim: saturday, nearly 1000 foodo concession workers at oracle park voted to authorize their union to go on strike. concession workers say they want access to better health insurance and more covid safety protocols. the workers say they have not gotten a pay raise in three years and many feel unsafe doing their jobs after 20 colleagues contracted covid since the start of this season. >> we feel we are not protected. tim: employees are demanding better contracts from their employer. the union president says it will be the giants who hold most of the cards. it is up to them to provide improved working conditions. >> many of these workers have worked for the ballpark for decades. some of them go back to the candlestick days. tim: he says most of what is being asked for is modest for a franchise as well off as the mlb

team. it is an assessment that has won support from local politicians such as the district supervisor, matt haney. >> i know this place does not operate without the workers. they serve the food. they are really what bring the spirit to the stadium. tim: with negotiations beginning this week, he says he is hoping both sides can come to an agreement soon. >> there is an opportunity for the employer to come to the table and do right and for the giants come to the table and address our concerns. kate: t t the strike in a statement. it reads, the management company is currently engaged in collective bargaining agreements. we encourage both sides to reach an agreement as soon as possible. the giants make the health and safety of everyone working and visiting oracle park a priority.

we operate in compliance with local and state health requirements. right now, california's recall election. this weekend, early voting expended in several bay area counties. election officials say voter turnout is shaping up to be historic. >> open at san francisco city hall. it is the first weekend you can drop off your ballot for california's recall election. >> tell me why you wanted to drive down here. >> for the convenience of doing it on a saturday and to get my vote in early. i think it is a waste ofs.>> cir early and person voting. >> this is strong turnout for this election. >> the election chief says fewer voters are showing up but mail-in ballots are flooding in. 183,000 ballots have been received out of 500,000 ballots

mailed to registered voters in the city. >> the turnout is two percentage points behind the presidential election. that was the biggest election. >> making it clear how high interest is in deciding that governor newsom keeps his job in sacramento. here, early voting has begun. starting this weekend, there are more days and more ways to vote. >> there is a lot of activity on the vote by mail side of the equation. >> san mateo elections officials say 170,000 mail-in ballots have been received. others are choosing to cast their ballot in person. >> i had a ballot in the mail. they took my ballot and tore it up, my mail-in ballot. >> h h h h h h h post office with his ballot.

>> i do not know who the post office receives it. here, i have more confidence with the elections division. >> elections officials say every vote will be counted. more voting centers will open starting next weekend. >> get out and vote. everybody's voice needs to be heard. kate: 19 early voting sites opened yesterday and 17 will be added next saturday. governor newsom is pulling out all the stops to fight the recall. he was joined by a list with warren -- elizabeth warren for an event. she >> went after larry elder. >>what i am concerned about is larry elder. what larry elder is saying is put him in the governor's office and if you get any chance at all he will take away the duly elected democratic majority and hand the united states senate

over to mitch mcconnell and the republicans. >> today governor newsom isernor convening again in southern california, this time with amy klobuchar. vice president kamala harris will campaign for gavin newsom this wednesday in the bay area. she was supposed to hit the trail with newsom couple weeks ago, but the attack on the airport in kabul led her to cancel those plans to stay in washington. no other details have been unveiled about her upcoming visit. we put together a documentary about california's last recall. you can find it on the abc 7 on app. in the north bay, today the last day of the first big music festival in the bay area since the start of the pandemic. there are a lot of precautions in place. proof of vaccination or a negative covid test is required.

and the start of the school year are fueling fears of a covid surge among the unvaccinated as pediatric hospitalizations have gone up to the highest numbers since the start of the pandemic. christine's loan -- christine sloan has the details. >> with americans expected to travel this holiday weekend, health officials are concerned about the spread of covid-19 among the unvaccinated after last year's labor day weekend. between mid-september and thanksgiving, the country saw its case average increase by 400% followed by an influx ofho. hospitals are already struggling. >> people are tired.

it is not just the numbers. we are in some sense abusing our health care workers. christine: in stillwater, oklahoma, the mayor has declared a state of emergency amid a shortage of medical staff. >> setting up some additional resources because of the fact that the hospital is full. >> oklahoma city's largest hospitals have no icu beds available. in california, surge protocols are in effect after having less than 10% of adult icu beds available for three straight days. pediatric hospitalizations are at the highest point since the pandemic began. in alabama, state officials say 13,000 cases were reported in schools over the last two weeks. in texas, there were 1200 73 reported cases of covid-19 in the first week of classes. last week, there were more than

at least 67 people have been killed across eight states in thafrmath of hurricane ida.ida t tropical system to hit the united states in four years. in louisiana, cleanup efforts continue. president biden toward -- toured damage. there are still hundreds of thousands of power outages across the state. >> 25,000 linemen from across the country have come to louisiana to help. two of them lost their lives in the process of trying to get power back up. kate: president biden will travel to new york and new jersey to survey storm damage. new york city mayor bill de blasio announced he is forming a new weather response task force to prepare for future storms that could bring major flooding.

this is how it looks from our tower camera. the sun coming up in about 20 minutes. it is 52 in oakland, low 50's in palo alto. 52 in pacifica and another view of the north bay here with temperatures on the cool side and that layer of haze. 47, napa, with mid-50's toward east bay. yesterday was well into the 90's in our inland valleys, moderate air quality for most, a couple areas right now with good air quality. through the afternoon, we will have that sea breeze but still look for some of that smoke to drift down from the north. that is why we have that spare the air alert. looking at the conditions that could be worse out there, we th, where temperatures are warm and air quality is horrible.

the spare the air alert not only today but by wednesday. that could be the hottest day inland and then hazy skies will take us through at least tomorrow, probably yonder. we have a big ridge. the edge of it is encompassing much of the valley and we still have that influence from our onshore flow. we are going to look at that smoke around the bay and even later today we will see high clouds, probably about 5:00, into monday as well. not doing much to mitigate afternoon highs, still very warm from the upper 90's inland. tuesday and wednesday, the heat holds. look for 85 in fremont. 91 in santa rosa. the seven day forecast, hot and hazy today.

still hot inland tuesday thomaso so high clouds, a little change wednesday. finally, we are getting cooler weather by thursday. the seasonal range returns friday, so we do see that hot weather this time of year. good thing we do not have the offshore flow. kate: the unofficial end of summer but also the start of summer. miniature therapy horses paid visit to walnut creek to support frontline health care workers. staff were able to take selfies with those miniature horses. health care workers say they have had a tough year. the therapy animals have given them a way to cope with pandemic related stress. one critical care nurse says she is now volunteering with the organization. >> they have really helped me through the pandemic. i go there and it is therapeutic reve there,ntlieving to go. sll

downtown benicia. they stayed open with to go orders during the pandemic and helps local food pantries. 2021 brought another challenge. >> in january, i contracted covid. i can legally lost my taste and smell. i have gone from being able to taste if the jam is slightly overdone by a few degrees to not being able to tell the difference between strawberries and raspberries. it was heartbreaking. >> as some smell returned, it was wired wrong. >> apples taste like citrus and pecans taste like pears. everything tastes like burning. >> pervan is trying smell therapy every day to try to stimulate different parts of her brain. >> she relies on the taste of others on her team to keep her recipes on target, still >>

kate: extra unemployment benefits for people hard-hit by the pandemic have expired. three federal programs came to an end yesterday. 7.5 million people will lose their benefits. millions will see employment checks cut by $300 a week. the last day to apply for pandemic unemployment assistance is october 6. there is good news on the homefront. concerns about mass evictions spiked almost as quickly as coronavirus. those fears have ease despite a common complaint about living here. >> the high cost of housing ranks among the biggest complaints from bay area residents. the median price of a home sold topped $1.3 million. those high housing prices may be a key reason why foreclosure filings are declining.

70% of california homeowners have at least 20% equity. that means many behind in mortgage payments can take advantage of that equity by selling their home and paying off their mortgage. >> there is a market for homeowners who have to sell their homes. they are likely to walk away with money in their pocket. >> foreclosure filing fell 26% in july compared to the previous month the bay area. and 8% from the year before, when there were virtually no foreclosures. >> those high prices become a benefit for homeowners who find themselves in financial distress. >> for many homeowners, a monthly mortgage payment remains stressful. reginald pearson lost his job as a plumber last year. he has nearly depleted his savings and does not know how he is going to pay his mortgage in the future. >> we have a big mortgage

payment. it is not comfortable. >> a housing advocate says her organization's housing program is getting calls from homeowners worried about keeping up with payments. >> we see in overrepresentatio e of african-americans and latinos. >> the national foreclosure protection plan gave distressed homeowners a temporary payment holiday as debt grew. those payments could become due as soon as september 30 when that program is scheduled to end. reginald brought his -- bought his new home right before being laid off. he wonders how much longer he can hold out. >> october, november. >> it is possible the forbearance program could be extended as it has been already. that would be welcome news to
