definitely not your ideal holiday weekend. thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. we were watching a special edition of abc 7 news -- you are watching a special edition of abc 7 news. hot weather and hazy air. a spare the air effect -- alert is in effect due to wildfires burning north of us. we have more with how people are coping. how are you coping out there? >> you know, i'm trying my best just to get through the day. it's been a smoky holiday weekend for sure up here in sonoma county. the visibility is as bad as we have seen it in quite a while. the west valley hills are almost invisible right now. folks are taking precautions, but they are trying to enjoy their holiday weekend. >> it's hot.

>> it's about 1000 feet. >> we found shirley braving a hike. the skies were hazy as far as you could see. >> you get spectacular views. you can see the smoke, too. >> we saw lots of smoke, blurring the views of wine country. >> we are having a college reunion trip. >> they moved their trip from lake tahoe due to the caldor fire and are monitoring air quality here. >> we are trying not to do any intense hiking. just little bits outside, then we get back indoors later. >> the view of san francisco was limited from our cam. the same smoky view from the east bay hills. >> we are expecting to see some levels of orange on the hui scale -- aqi scale, unhealthy for sensitive groups.

cornell: the scottish highland games were going full kilt at the alameda county fairgrounds in pleasanton, despite the air quality and temperatures. >> i'm wearing a hat to keep my face out of the sun. and then, all of the athletes, after we get done with the games, we'll retreat into the shade. cornell: we've been doing a lot of that today, retreating into the shade. air quality experts say those with respiratory issues should try to stay indoors this weekend, if you can. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. dion: hopefully, you can get yourself into some air conditioning soon. many thanks to you. it's not the best holiday weekend in the bay area with all the heat and smoke. we could be in for another round tomorrow. i feel like this isn't ending anytime soon. drew: we have a spare the air that's been extended from today into tomorrow. hazy skies once again.

take a look at the tracker. air quality is moderate. a little bit cleaner as you go towards the coast line. ukiah, that is where we find the poorest air quality. unhealthy for sensitive groups. you can see the haze close to the surface. as we go into monday tomorrow, we will find moderate to poor air quality to finish out the holiday weekend. tuesday, we will start to see minor improvements, more in the moderate category. tomorrow, along with the air quality issues, it's a pretty hot end to the holiday. we will have that in a few minutes. dion: thanks. a lot of our smoke problems can be traced to the caldor fire, burning in the lake tahoe area. firefighters have gained ground. the evacuation orders for some have been downgraded to warnings. still no word if people will be allowed back in. containment is up to 43% thanks

to favorable weather conditions the past few days. there was some concern today about the winds picking up and fanning those claims. the fire has scorched over 215,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes. you can track the air quality where you live, through our website, or any time on your connected tv. you can also see the smoke forecast and seven day forecast all available now on our app for roku and more. search abc 7 bay area news app to download it. fans heading to tonight's game at oracle park should not expect issues with concessions after the workers voted to authorize a strike. the union tells us it doesn't plan on taking any action and is heading back to the negotiating table later this week for three days of bargaining. workers are asking for hazard pay and more access to health insurance benefits. the union claims well over a dozen workers have been infected with covid this year.

the south bay a busy night for slideshow calls. some of you may find this video disturbing. this is just one of the incidents at san jose police responded to last night. take a look on the center of your screen. someone was hit as one of the cars spun around the circuit. no word on any injuries. there were reports of illegal activity from multiple locations across the city. keep in mind, you could be cited and your vehicle impounded for up to 30 days for participating in a sideshow. protesters in the bay area took to the streets today against the new restrictive abortion ban in texas. >> without basic r b can't be free. dion: the raging grannies group joined in. the texas law bans abortions when fetal cardiac activity is detected, which is typically six

weeks into the pregnancy. they say it infringes on a women's right to choose. >> it is a draconian measures. it is very pervasive. it can be imitated in other states, and other states are already talking about doing it. dion: the texas law is seen as one of the most restrictive in the country. take a look. if you got an email alert from the oakland unified school district about covid cases, it was in error. the district says in error -- an error sent out false messages every hour starting at midnight, containing information about old cases, including people testing positive for the virus or people who had symptoms. you can ignore the emails. they are turning off the system so they can fix the problem. we are nine days out from the recall election. governor newsom is pulling out all the stops this weekend. see who joined him today. plus, hear from the republicans

dion: gavin newsom is spending the weekend fighting for his job. he is campaigning against the recall effort with some help from high profile members of the democratic party, including massachusetts senator elizabeth warren, senator amy klobuchar. election day is less than nine days away and the race is heating up with democrats concerned about the potential

recall's national implications. in an exclusive interview, senator warren explains why the democratic party is paying particular attention to the recall race. warren says her party could lose the majority in the senate if newsom is recalled. >> the leading opponent has said if he gets the chance, he will replace any democratic california senator with a republican. dion: republican opponents have seemingly relied on name recognition in this race. neither has appeared in any of the debates, nor have they complained. their gop opponents are raising red flags. >> i think they will say we've tried politicians. we've tried media celebrities. these are people that don't know how to manage. the government is trying to focus on national leaders to come into california and try and save him.
