wherever you stream. a two mile stretch of highway was closed to cars for nearly a year and a half and only open to pedestrians and cyclists. last month, the city announced a compromise, but tensions are still running high. luz pena spoke to both sides. luz: it's been less than a month since cars were allowed to drive on san francisco's great highway. but the signs are still up. for many, the fight is not over. >> hate it. don't like it. luz: san francisco residents is one of many cyclists who have been pushing for the great highway to remain car free. but on august 16, the mayor announced a compromise, the highway would open for traffic from 6:00 a.m. monday to noon on fridays and close to cars on the weekends and holidays. >> the freeway being closed causes a lot of congestion on

the surface streets here. so it takes me literally probably 15 more minutes to get home from where it's blocked. luz: now the question is, how long will this compromise last? according to the mayor's office, a long-term decision will be made in the coming months. they say this will require legislative action by the board of supervisors. senator scott weiner has been a vocal supporter to keep the highway closed. >> the number of streets and blocks that we're asking to be kept permanently for pedestrians and cyclists and other cars is a tiny percentage of our overall road network. luz: in the two mile stretch, we found many people with diverse opinions. but the majority we spoke to today agree with the compromise. >> i like having it open for foot traffic, but i can see it being open during the week for car traffic, making a lot of starts -- sense. luz: but some don't even want to

hear the word compromise again. >> i don't like compromises. i think we should extremely ban cars. luz: now we will have to wait and see what the fate of this highway will be. in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7 news. dion: moving from earlier today, you can see shows the hazy conditions. a spare the air alert has been extended until tomorrow. we'd rather just drew tuma joining us, tracking at all. drew: moderate to poor air quality today, and we'll likely see a repeat of that same air that he on our holiday. the air quality right now is kind of a mixed bag depending on where you are at this mixed hour. good air quality, but parts of south bay are unhealthy for sensitive groups. there's a lot of matter lingering in our atmosphere right now. fortunately, there's not really a breeze to freshen up our air.

so the spare the air date isn't in effect until tomorrow. you can see moderate to unhealthy air quality depending where you are in the day. we'll find improving air quality by tuesday, moderate range. but the next two days, we're still going to keep the hot air overhead. we'll have a look at those temperatures in the full forecast in a few minutes. dion: speaking of the poor air quality, because of wildfire smoke, it's put a damper on some people's labor day weekend plans. here's abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard. >> it's hot. it's about a thousand feet to the summit. cornell: we found surely same braving a hike in santa rosa, where skies were hazy as far as you could see. >> you get spectacular views and you can see the smoke. >> we saw lots of smoke on our trip up in my country from smoke from northern california wildfires. >> we are having a college reunion trip. cornell: madeline and her friends were winetasting.

they moved their trip from lake tahoe due to the caldor fire, and are now monitoring air quality here. >> we are trying not to do any tense hiking or things like that, but little bits outside and then get back later. cornell: the view of san francisco was them at it. the same smoky view from the east bay hills. >> as the day heats up, we're expecting to see some levels of orange, unhealthy for sensitive groups. cornell: they were showing lots of orange levels in the north and east bay. the scottish highland games were going full kilt at the alameda county fairgrounds in pleasanton despite declining air quality and temperatures creeping towards 100 degrees. >> i'm wearing a hat to keep my face out of the seven. -- out of the sun. and then all of the athletes will retreat into the shade. cornell: we've been doing a lot of that, too, retreating into the shade. folks with respiratory issues

are supposed to stay indoors this weekend if you can. in santa rosa, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. dion: that is good advice. you may have noticed a qr code on the bottom left of your screen. we are using it during all of our wildfire coverage. you can scan the code using your cell phone's camera and it will take you to the abc 7 wildfire tracker. with it, you can follow the major fires and see air quality for your neighborhood. to the caldor fire now, where people who live in the south lake tahoe city limits can return to their homes, but other evacuation orders remain in effect. fire officials say residents do need to be ready to evacuate again in case fire conditions change. weather has cooperated over the past 72 hours, allowing them to make progress on slowing the fire spread. and just in from calfire, containment has gone up to 44%, but 27,000 structures are still threatened tonight. more than 700 homes have been destroyed.

calfire says firefighters will actively patrol the fire tonight, seeking out and extinguish in heat. reporter sebastian robertson spent the day tracking the firefight. reporter: near the front lines of the caldor fire, you can see air support is still playing a big role in the fight against this fire, not to extinguish the fire, rather to get fire crews valuable time to try to entrench themselves in those fire lines that they've spent the last two days building, a productive two days. fire crews say they've taken advantage of relatively low wind and low overnight temperatures, buying them valuable time to try and stop this fire from spreading. a fire that is approaching its third week of burning, claiming more than 200,000 acres. >> right now, we're nearing the subalpine, so it creates this fuse and also mitigates of use. it's harder for them to get in here and less access, but it's also a little bit harder for it

to burn. reporter: the fight against this fire is still not over. fire crews on the ground say this is the hottest and driest day they've seen in several days. back to you. dion: that 500 people had to be evacuated this afternoon after a brush fire broke out in placer county. most were visiting the auburn state recreation area. calfire says the bridge fire has spread across 250 acres from the forest hill bridge. it is currently 0% contained. police say it is not a threat to the city of auburn. one local community center is getting ready to help 150 refugees from afghanistan. the only problem is they don't know when they'll arrive in the bay area. ryan curry shows is the process of getting afghans acclimated. >> i cannot say that we are really ready, but we have all the plans in place. reporter: this doctor says he and his team of volunteers are eager to see the refugees who will call the bay area home.

>> today was the first day we got shipments of materials like blankets and diapers, things for kids. reporter: the islamic community center has one mission, help the new refugees feel welcome when they come to the bay area. he says most of them are in covid-19 quarantine, but soon they will arrive at need help from the community. >> they are trying to welcome them. we are trying to show that we care, and that they matter to us. reporter: he divided his team of volunteers into six sections focused on different areas like caring for toddlers or finding housing. he says over 100 volunteers have stepped up so far. one of them is someone whose parents are from afghanistan, and see this moment as a right time to help. >> we want to help them by helping them with paperwork, translation services, taking them grocery shopping, showing them around. reporter: they said the easy part is organizing materials like clothes, toiletries, and blankets. the harder part was finding housing. but that soon became less of an

issue. >> as soon as people heard about these african -- afghan refugees, i have a list of 20 homes. they're calling me and saying, send me three people. i have a five bedroom house and i'm living alone. i can accommodate them. reporter: as they moved to the bay area, volunteer work or give the refugees a sense of comfort in a difficult time. >> obviously, i'd love to give them just a great big hug and let them know they're not alone and there is an amazing community here and a lot of allies who are willing to support them in any way that we can. reporter: ryan curry, abc 7 news. dion: a lot of allies indeed. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff worn afghanistan could descend into civil war and the country could turn into a haven for terrorism. he made those comments while visiting troops in europe. general miley says the resurgence of terrorism in the region is very likely.

meanwhile, there are reports that taliban is preventing four commercial planes, some supposed to be evacuating out of afghanistan. the state department is not confirming there are americans on board, but satellite images show those jets are sitting idle. governor gavin newsom spent this weekend fighting for his job as the california recall vote nears. he campaigned in southern california with some help from high-profile members of the democratic party, including massachusetts senator elizabeth warren. minnesota senator amy klobuchar also appeared with newsom today. election day is less than nine days away, and the race is definitely heating up, with democrats concerned about the potential recalls national implications. in an exclusive joint interview with abc news, senator warren explains why the democratic party is paying particular attention to the recall race. lauren says her party could lose the majority in the senate if newsom is recalled.

fire crews performed cpr on the victim after he was pulled from the water. he regained a pulse but remained unconscious. firefighters took into zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. it is still unclear how he got into the water. a hiker has died after falling from a trail at the top of a bluff in pacifica this morning. emergency responders found the body of a woman on the beach 50 feet below mooring point. when this is reporting seeing that victim trip and fall at about 9:40 in the money. in the south bay, a three alarm fire in san jose has left 24 units uninhabitable. firefighters were called to the blaze near el cajon drive just after 5:00 this evening. it started in one apartment and quickly spread through the complex. no injuries have been reported. that is the good news. investigators are looking into what caused that fire. bottle rock organizers pulled the plug on guns and roses and surprise guest dave groll because of strict crew for you.

that's about it from this vantage point. any cloud cover tonight's going to be very limited, pretty much along the immediate coastline. that will set the stage for another warm to hot day tomorrow. the numbers right now, down to 56 in the city, 60 in oakland, 67 in san jose, 56 in santa rosa, but 77 in brentwood, 71 right now in concord. gears live doppler 7. we're tracking high pressure sitting over us right now, acting like a heat pump over us the next couple days, and also acts like a lid on our atmosphere. we really need some sort of breeze to kick up to kind of mix up our atmosphere. we're not going to have that tomorrow, unfortunately. overnight tonight, limited cloud cover, may be fog around the bay shoreline, but most of us dealing with mainly clear skies tonight, temperatures in the mid to upper 50's first thing out the door early tomorrow morning.

there are worries this labor day weekend could make our covid situation surge even worse. an average of 1100 people are dying in the u.s. each day, 131% in the last month. trevor ault has more from new york. trevor: tonight, labor day weekend crowds across the country triggering new fears and already dire covid crises could student -- soon potentially get worse. college football rolling back with packed stadiums, tens of thousands in philadelphia for the maiden festival. but with the delta variant driving america's caseload back near 150,000 infections a day, 13 times what it was in june, tonight, dr. fauci with this stern warning. >> we can't be having 150,000 new infections per day. that's pandemic numbers. that's the first thing we've got to crack that one right away. trevor: hospitals and states with low vax rates like idaho are already struggling. >> nobody is vaccinated.

asian leap and primarily asian cast. abc 7 news anchor kristin z sat down today with the star to talk about what that means to him and the community. kristen: congrats on an amazing weekend. simu: it like people were underestimating us. i was reading some really low estimates for a really long time , and it's been a crazy weekend because i've just seen that number go up and up. kristen: the box office records, the rave reviews. is this all part of the simu liu life plan? simu: that's a hard no. i had no idea what i had for my plan. i went to school for accounting. that tells you how confident i was in where everything was going to turn out. this is incredible. it's such a dream come true for so many reasons. i've wanted to play as superhero pretty much my whole life. before i knew they were in movies, i just wanted to be a superhero.
