if you have outdoor plans, be aware with the poor air quality means for you. kate larsen is live in san francisco to break it down. >> good morning. you just heard lisa talking about the temperatures. if you want to avoid the high temperatures and the poor air quality, come to the great highway in san francisco. we have a qi and temperatures in the 50's. cool and clean but that is not going to be the case throughout the bay area all day long. the bay area air quality district says wildfire smoke combined with high inland temperatures and vehicle exhaust is causing unhealthy small acumen leash and in the bay area. yesterday, smokey hayes bang obstructed views in a beautiful wine country. visibility of san francisco was extremely limited. same problem in the east bay hills. people out hiking and wine tasting this week and have been doing their best to stay safe.

hospital. it is unclear how he got into the water. >> the taliban claiming total control of afghanistan after taking the last rebel stronghold. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff mark l.a. warns the country -- mark milley words the country could turn into a haven for terrorism. he made those comments while visiting troops in europe. he says a resurgence of terrorism in the region is very likely. meanwhile, there are reports the taliban is preventing four commercial planes, some supposed to be evacuating americans out of afghanistan, from taking off from an airport in northern afghanistan. the state department is not confirming there are americans on board but satellite images show those jets sitting idle. one local community center is getting ready to help around 150 refugees from afghanistan. the only problem, they don't know when they will arrive in the bay area. ryan caray shows us the process of getting afghans acclimated. >> we have all the plans in

place. >> are eager to see the afghanistan refugees who will soon call the bay area home. >> today was the first day we got the shipments of materials like blankets, diapers, things for kids. >> the community center has one mission, help the new refugees feel welcome when they come to the bay area. he says most of them are in covid quarantine but soon will arrive and need help from the community. >> they are trying to welcome them. we're are trying to show we care and they matter to us. >> d divided his team of volunteers into six sections focused on different areas like caring park toddlers or finding housing. he says over 100 volunteers have stepped up so far. one of them seize this moment as the right time to help. >> we want to help acclimate them with helping them with paperwork, translation services, taking them grocery shopping, showing them around. >> they said the easy part has

been organizing materials. the harder part was finding housing. that soon became less of an issue. >> as soon as people heard about these afghan refugees, believe me, i have a list of probably 20 homes that want these families to come. they're calling me and saying, send me to families. i have a five bedroom house and i live alone. send me four people. >> as they start to move to the bay area, he says her volunteer work will hopefully give the refugees a sense of comfort at a difficult time. >> obviously, i would love to give them a great big hug and let them know they are not alone and there is an amazing community here and alice who are willing to support them -- allies who are willing to support them anyway we can. >> bottlerock just wrapped up following his return for the first time since the pandemic, and it mostly went off without a hitch except for this.

that has people divided. kate larsen is along the great highway this morning that is once again closed on this labor day holiday. >> good morning. the great highway has become one of the greatest debates here in san francisco. the portion of the road behind me has been closed to traffic, is closed today because it is a highway. for about a year and a half, was closed during the pandemic. a two mile stretch. promise to your to have to give people more space to walk and ride bikes and some people love it and others, not so much. when san francisco reopened the summer, the city compromise and three weeks ago the highway partially reopened to cars. traffic is allowed from 6:00 a.m. monday to noon on fridays and closed to cars on the weekends and holidays. there are mixed feelings right now about this arrangement. >> the freeway being closed causes a lot of congestion on surface streets.
