break it down. >> good morning. hope you are having a great start to your labor day. it is cool along the highway and we have fantastic air quality, aqi in the 40's but that is not the case everywhere throughout the bay area. there is a spare the air alert and advisory for smoke through today. the air quality district says wildfire smoke combined with high temperatures and vehicle exhaust is causing unhealthy smog accumulation in the bay area. yesterday, hays in sonoma obstructed the beautiful views of wine country. same problem in the east bay hills. people out yesterday hiking and wine tasting were doing their best to stay cool. >> about 1000 feet to the summit. you get spectacular views and the smoke too. >> we are monitoring it. we are trying not to do any

intense hiking but a little bit outside and we will get back indoors later. kate: pockets, mostly in san francisco come so a few spots that have safe air, but most of the bay area looks to be in the yellows and oranges with aqi in the 100s. this type of smoke and pollution can be irritating for those with respiratory issues like asthma or older people and young children, so if you are in an unhealthy area or a sensitive group, stay inside today. i live in san francisco so i did not know what these things are, but i was reading you need to set this to recirculate in your car so you do not bring the unhealthy air inside. i'm kate larsen, abc7 news. julian: you will be noticing this qr code on the bottom left

the fire 44% contained. >> we are nearing the subalpine right now, so it creates issues and also mitigates issues. it is hard to access but also harder for it to burn. julian: evacuation orders for south lake tahoe have been downgraded to warnings, allowing residents to return. they need to be prepared to evacuate again. jobina: drive sober or get pulled over is the message from oakland police. they will have patrols looking for people suspected of driving under the influence. julian: it was a busy weekend for sideshow calls in the south bay. some of the video we are about to show you may be disturbing. this is video of one of the incidents police responded to. that is what you see circled in yellow. no word on how bad that person was hurt.

reports of illegal activity.your vehicle impounded for participating. jobina: the taliban has taken complete control of afghanistan. there are questions about what happens next. this week, secretary of state anthony will meet with allies in qatar and germany. they will talk about how to evacuate americans and at-risk afghans left behind. about 100 americans and thousands of at risk afghans remain. the u.s. officially withdrew from the country last month. the taliban has been blocking planes trying to fly evacuees out of afghanistan. officials tell the associated press at least four planes have been unable to leave the country for days. there are conflicting accounts on why they could not take off. the planes were carrying several

hundred people. one local community center is trying to get people ready because there will be a fues from afghanistan coming they do not know when they will arrive in the bay area. abc7 news reporter brian curry shows is the process of getting refugees acclimated. >> we have the plans in place. >> he says he and his team of volunteers are eager to see the refugees who will soon call the bay area home. >> today was the first day we got shipments of materials like blankets, diapers. brian: the islamic community center has one mission -- help the refugees feel welcome when they come to the bay area. right now, most are in quarantine but will soon arrive and will need help from the immunity. >> we are trying to welcome them, show them that we care. brian: he divided his volunteers

into six sections, focusing on areas like caring for toddlers or finding housing. he says more than 100 volunteers have stepped up so far, one of them, this person whose parents are from afghanistan. >> we want to help them, translation services, grocery shopping, showing them around. brian: he says the easy part has been organizing materials. the harder part was finding housing. he says that soon became less of an issue. >> as soon as people heard about these afghan refugees, believe me, i have a list of over 20 homes that they want these families to come to, so they are calling saying, send me 10 people, send me two families. i have a five bedroom house and i am living alone. i can accommodate them. brian: she says her volunteer work will hopefully give the refugees comfort in this difficult time. >> i would love to give them a

president biden talked with leaders about the recovery efforts. he has pledged federal aid to support survivors of ida. urmeca liven a county hit by a weather disaster the summer. the latest is of course hurricane ida, taking the lives of at least 60 people across eight states. more than 500,000 people still without power this morning. people are waiting in long lines for pretty much everything from water, ice, food and gas. the extreme heat has made the situation even worse. officials say some of the hardest hit areas could be without power until the end of the month. >> every night, we get a little bit warmer. we are trying to tough it out without any air. it is just too tough. jobina: that person -- julian: that person saying it is getting warmer every night there. the cost to repair and rebuild

the two mile stretch of the great highway is closed because it is a holiday and that is one of the new rules. it is this two mile stretch behind me. look. people are awake. that's nice. the stretch has been closed during the pandemic to give people more space to bike and walk, do that sort of thing. people have loved it. others have not loved it so much but when san francisco reopened in the summer, the city created a compromise and, three weeks ago, it partially reopened to cars from 6:00 a.m. monday to noon friday, closed on the weekends and holidays. there is disagreement about this arrangement. >> the freeway being close causes congestion on the surface streets. it takes me literally probably 15 more minutes to get home where it is blocked. >> i like having it open for foot traffic but i can see it being open during the week for car traffic making sense.

>> i do not like the compromise. i do not like compromises. we need to ban cars. we have not gone far enough. kate: he is not mincing his words. it is unclear at this point how long this arrangement will last. mayor london breed's office says a plan will be devised in the coming months and it will require legislative action from the board of supervisors. we will have to see how that plays out. i personally have always thought that the sign of a good compromise is when nobody is happy. there seems to be a lot of those people around here, but it is a holiday, so whatever happens, you might as well come out and enjoy the great highway today because it is closed to cars. kate carson, abc7 news. jobina: the california recall election is coming in a week and it is heating up with democrats concerned about the national implications. democrat gavin newsom spent the

wrapped up this weekend, a new record for labor day openings. and this is the first major superhero opening to future an asian lead. we sat down with one of the stars to talk about what it means to him. >> congrats on an amazing opening. >> i had low estimates for a long time and i am -- it has been a crazy weekend because i have seen the number go up. >> box office records, rave reviews. is this all part of the life plan? you knew this was coming? >> that is a hard no. i had no idea what i had for my plan. i went to school for accounting so that shows you how confident i was. this is incredible. it is a dream come true for many reasons. i have wanted to play superhero my whole life.

before i knew they were in movies, i just wanted to be a superhero. i literally just just to see so many people come and support the movie, seeing the theater buyouts and grassroots campaigns, that is the engine of what is propelling this forward and it is all over my social media so i cannot imagine what it must be for everyone else. >> a lot of asian americans having an emotional experience. i know i did. i know my teenage son did.id.id. to see myself and a new light, a strong chemical light. how does that feel as actor? >> everybody want to be part -- everybody wants to be part of something that is zeitgeist-y, challenging norms. we have done that not with
