one of the most prevalent crimes in the city. j.r. stone talked with her and a story you will only see here. >> at least 700 photos dad, my husband had a lot of fishing equipment. a table that belonged to my grandfather. a guitar that belonged to my other grandfather. j.r.: she is describing some of the items stolen from her and her husband's toyota tacoma truck. a vehicle burglary might not surprise you, but she and her husband are fire evacuees from south lake who have been staying in the city and unable to go home for the last 10 days. >> it was touch and go for a little bit. the fire came within 1000 feet. j.r.: she says their neighborhood was saved i firefighters and they are forever grateful. sadly, these are digital pictures of her and her late father who died earlier this

year. originals she hoped to say from the fire were stolen this labor day weekend from their truck parked in this pierce street garage in the marina district, close to their hotel. >> all of those cool photos of the life before me and that transitioned -- the photo of him holding me for the first time at the hospital when i was born. and, you know, all of those firsts in my life. some of my first memories were captured in those photos. to see that someone has taken them, it was really heartbreaking. j.r.: she says everything was locked and out of sight, but according to the most recent police data, car thefts are up 19% in san francisco from this time last year. she's hopeful that the thief has a change of heart and returns the pictures. >> it is the only photos but i have left of my dad. to see the realization that

those were gone, that was the biggest hit. j.r.: j.r. stone, abc 7 news. ama: what a loss. there have been so many developments in the caldor wildfire. crews are getting ready to reopen highway 50. the need to remove trees and fix parables. officials are looking to get back into the grizzly flats community but they warned that maybe will not be able to stay because of serious fire damage to water pipes. the acreage is holding steady at 338 square miles burned. the fire is 40% contained. to the dixie fire. two fires burning on both sides of dixie valley merged and moved into the north end of the valley, destroying some structures. the fire is 371 square miles with 58% containment. evacuation orders and rem warnis remained in effect. the dixie fire is responsible for the death of a first responder over the weekend.

the individual was suffering from a previous illness. dan: smoke from the wildfires has led officials to extend the air alert through tomorrow. spencer christian is here to let you know what areas receive the worst air quality. spencer: it appears it will be the south bay and santa clara valley. let me show you the air quality conditions. we had the spare the air day today. we had some improvement in the air quality. the greens and yellows indicate good to moderate air quality. you can see it will be moderate at best for most regions. the poorest will be in the santa clara valley. the good news is we expect good air quality wednesday, thursday and friday in the north bay and south-central bay. upgrading to moderate quality. the one reason with the smoke is high-pressure pressure over the area right now is pulling in a

safe parking segment for people living in their vehicles is not getting oil warm welcome from people who live in the area. it is on city-owned property at 71 vista montana. neighbors say it is next to a park. amanda del castillo says the site is scheduled to open tomorrow unless protesters get their way. amanda: this fence around a new temporary parking site. the former location around vista montana will hold about 20 vehicles. >> they have lost a lot of vehicles. they need more support and we need more affordable housing. amanda: andrea irvin with home first services says it will be people relocating from this vacant lot along component drive where apple plans to put its campus. working with a number of organizations and city officials to make this happen. a longtime homeless advocate spok who say something has got to give.

>> they are helping this program gets them into some real housing because of it does not, they have no place to go. amanda: signs organizing a move-in day protest with residents pushing a petition to stop the relocation. >> we want to be part of the process. we understand the situation of the homeless. right now, it is not about shoving it down our throats. it is about including us. amanda: he's another resident and says they only learned about the project last wednesday. the proximity to two neighboring parks could be problematic for families and young children. >> i certainly hope that never have a letter go emergency, natural disaster before them so they end up in this situation and they are greeted with such intolerance. amanda: the city plans to give this temporary site open for at least nine months. a city memo pointing to the remotelity of staying open if the site is found to be safe and effective.

dan: for millions of americans, this labor day marks the end of their unemployment checks. at least the $300 per week from the federal component. laura anthony explains that some employers are hoping the end of this benefit might spur more people to return to the workforce. laura: they are pretty much everywhere you look. help wanted signs and the windows of bay area stores and restaurants. even with the reopening, it has been especially difficult for small business will to find and keep employees. >> people didn't want to come back. nobody wants to interact with people anymore. people are scared. we have lost a lot of people, a lot of turnover. it is a competitive hiring market for good candidates. laura: now the federal government's enhanced benefits are ending which means more than 8 million americans will no longer receive weekly unemployment checks. >> september

that is when the $300 and. hopefully, as with think about what's happening, we don't need it consistently. laura: one big challenge for many cases, the customers are back, but the employees are not. the hope is that will change going forward. >> we are going to get more candidates because they don't have any choice. but have to work. we will find more people to work, yeah. laura: getting more people back to work is about more than money. other barriers include concerns over the delta variant and the scarcity of affordable childcare. so, small business owners must be creative when competing for qualified workers. >> we try to be really flexible. work with students, moms. make sure we can be flexible as our perk. even if we cannot pay them a ton more or even in some cases match what they are getting on unemployment. laura: laura anthony, abc 7

the main districts. ryan: he's a former journalist,e now political analyst. he says what he has heard from former colleagues is a devastating invasion from the taliban. >> i have heard verified, credible reports that the supply train of food is cut off. ryan: it has been almost one week since u.s. forces left, but some locally do not want the u.s. to forget what is happening about what is happening overseas. >> we are advocating for the needs of those directly impacted. ryan: she helped develop a text alert people can use to send a message to local congressional members urging them to still be aware of the situation with the taliban. >> this was really a response to the extremely troubling reports from on the ground that we have been hearing regarding attacks on human rights, humanitarian efforts. ryan: she hopes more awareness will lead to a global response to help those still suffering at the hands of the taliban/
