single busiest travel day since the onset of the pandemic. >> i think any situation where people are potentially bringing the virus from an area where there is a lot of infections to an area where there are not that many infections is concerning. average there were 426 daily covid cases reported on july second, the weekend leading up to the fourth of july surge. this past weekend, the average jumped to more than 3200 daily covid cases. >> you look at great britain and what happened there, they had a covid peak that came up, drop down, and it was almost like a salmon, went back up again. >> do you think that will happen here? >> there's no way to tell. it is merely cautionary. we need to avoid crowds and maintain social distance. >> to add to that, we should

only energize voters. it shows that national democrats see what is at stake in this election. there is only a week to go. is there still a lot of apathy or ignorance among voters? do people realize we are this close to an election? >> it is tough. it is off-season in an off year. a lot of things are going on between covid, employment, fires, there's a lot competing for people's attention right now. speaking of attention, the more attention drawn to this race, if it is the president coming in over the vice president coming in, the money being spent in a solidly blue state, gavin newsom has not just got to beat back this recall, he's got to do it in a pretty good number, or else the rest of the country is going to go -- what is happening in california that they are not voting? >> absolutely. we have seen governor newsom try
6:10 pm
to energize certain pockets of voters. we saw him go after the latino vote. we have seen latino voters not turning in their ballots at the rate governor newsom would like. he is hoping to see latino voters turned out, young people turn out, and he thinks that will make him win this race, but we'll see. maybe republicans will show up in droves at the polling place on tuesday. >> a couple months ago, it looked a little bit different, but the latest polling doesn't show the recall likely to fail or the question is, as always, how much can you trust these polls? >> that is it. it is one thing to answer the phone or fill out an internet poll by a couple of >>, it is another two fill out that ballot in the mail, and there's a certain amount of worry among democrats that the longer these ballots are out there -- remember, they were mailed out weeks ago. the longer they stay out, that is an indication that people got that ballot in the mail and

rather than fill it out, it went in the garbage can. >> we found a lot of people who were confused about how to fill out the ballot in the first place. the fact governor newsom has been telling people to simply leave the second part blank -- a lot of people are confused by that, too. you should know anybody can fill the second part of the ballot regardless of how you fill out the first. >> it seems like this race really comes down to larry elder versus gavin newsom. does that help or hurt the governor? >> it helps the governor if he is trying to turn out that base. it helps larry elder because the attention is really on him. >> larry elder has certainly become the face of the so-called republican recall effort. newsom seems to be using him as the punching bag for that effort. >> days are ticking by.
