he saved the life of a girl crossing the street in front of her school. thank you for joining us. >> the crossing guard was a volunteer filling in for a friend. it happened this afternoon in front of stanley middle school. abc7 news reporter kate larsen is there. you spoke with the family of the driver and parents of the crossing guard. reporter: so many families been impacted by the accident that took place on the street. people are just starting to show up to deliver flowers. the one thing i have heard from parents, students, and the crossing guard's family is the guard who grew up in this community died a hero. tuesday dismissal at stanley middle school in lafayette took a tragic turn when an suv hit a crossing guard in front of the school. >> he was getting pulled out from the paramedics, and he was getting cpr. >> stella champion says at the

time, the street was crowded with students. >> i think there was a kid injured, but the crossing guard saved the kid. >> the crossing guard, 45-year-old ashley diaz, was volunteering at stanley. the same middle school he attended growing up. >> it is unbelievable. just this morning we spoke to him before he went at the clock for the crossing. >> his parents live nearby. they say he lived in san francisco and worked in i.t. when he visited them, he would help out at the school, since they were short on guards. >> he was a great son. it is devastating. reporter: an unthinkable task for any parent. they went to jon miller hospital to identify their son's body. >> the father of another kid came to me and said if it wasn't for your son, my daughter would be dead. he died a hero. he will never come back to us. reporter: as for the driver

the suv, she is the grandmother of a stanley middle school student who was in the suv at the time. i spoke to her son, who says his mom and his son are doing ok. they are at home and physically ok, but coping. he also told me "we are so incredibly sorry and devastated by this unthinkably horrible accident." live in lafayette, kate larsen. >> thank you very much. let's move on. dangerous weather is on the way for northern california. that includes dry lightning. it is not expected to be as severe as last august, when dry lightning storms ignited more than 500 wildfires across california. the scu lightning complex, czu complex, and lnu complex burned more than 13 square miles in the greater bay area. sandy patel is here with more on when the fire weather watch will begin. >> it takes effect tomorrow.

this is the time of year when incredibly dry fuels combining with potential for thunderstorms. that is why the weather watch goes into effect at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow until 11:00 a.m. friday. expecting gusts to 30, lighting, potential for rapidfire development and spread. it is in effect for solano county. let me show you the state. most of northern and central california under either a red flag warning or fire weather watch. it is really really really combination. low pressure right here. subtropical moisture moving in from the south that hooked together. we will see the threat for thunder. the best potential will be over the sierra nevada and southern california. there is a small chance it would be here, and if it develops, it could prove problematic. >> thank you so much for that

update. firefighters battling the caldor fire south of lake tahoe are preparing for the potential for dry lightning. containment is up to 50%. despite the challenging conditions in the eastern zone of the fire near kirkwood ski resort. calfire talked about how the incoming weather could impact firefighting efforts. >> we can have fires in different directions going fast. these areas have high potential for when we get the winds coming through. it could push our lines and we could have issues that contributed by the weather. >> the caldor fire has burned more than 340 square miles and destroyed more than 1000 structures to began 24 days ago. >> climate change and protecting the environment is an issue we focus on in the effort to build a better bay area. we are learning a mandatory water conservation effort is falling short in santa clara county. abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo you found out what it will take to hit the mark. >> there can come a day when the water comes out of the tap.

we have seen it all over the world. >> a storm warning from gary crimmins. wednesday night, he addressed the water district in los altos hills, identified as falling behind in today's emergency conservation effort. actually increasing water use. >> this is not giving us any friends. >> in june, the board implemented a 15% mandatory reduction from 2019 levels. the goal not yet met. but the district is seeing a drop, with water use falling consistently. down 6% countywide in july. >> being able to save 6% is better than 0%. reporter: stanford university and the city of al alto where the biggest water savers. cutting back 15% and 13%. >> 15% can be hard for a household to cut back on. i think the only place where we can do it is outside. reporter: inside, and apart from relying on people, catherine cushing said long-term strategic water use should involve changes
