that morning, chilling 20 years later. julian: in our other top story this morning, strikes of thunder and lightning across the bay area. crews on high alert well youyouu were asleep appear. kumasi: let's take a live look at what it looks like outside. drew is following all of that very closely. drew: good morning. we found that lightning early this morning. did you see any of it? jobina: i did not know what it was at first. drew: some people were like, what is this? we are lucky that it came with some moisture. on live doppler 7, we have some

action. i want to emphasize the worst of the lightning threat is over. we are seeing the tail end moves through solano county. no lightning with this right now. there is a quick downpour on highway 4 as it pushes through martinez. no lightning right now in solano county. about one hour ago, we had about 30 lightning strikes. live doppler 7 showing you the tail end of the storm system moving through the bay area. hour-by-hour we go. 6:00 a.m., you can see the moisture in parts of solano county. over the next hour, it is all pushing out. we will turn to a lot of sunshine, 60's and 70's along the bay shoreline. julian: thank you. we are seeing wild weather across northern california. lightning, thunder and rain. something we have not seen in months.

in the north bay neighborhood, after the storm caused major damage. a resident says lightning struck a pine tree and caused it to topple over onto vehicles. it sounded like a bomb exploded. pg&e cut power to the neighborhood. they also need to inspect the power pole close to the pine tree. kumasi: this video is from the east bay. there was at least one lightning strike. this weather has firefighters on high alert to see if this lightning strikes spark any wildfires. our reporter is joining us live. >> we are at a high point in concorde and we got quite a show. it is starting to slow down. for a couple of hours, we were constantly saying, did you see that one?

here is some video. we saw a big bursts of light that lit up the whole sky. we also saw those zigzag bolts of lightning. we are looking to the northwest. we also captured a strike while driving on 680 in danville. we are hearing from viewers about some rain and this storm. five minutes of a downpour in martinez. that could make a huge difference this morning. even though we have not heard of any fires from the strikes, firefighters worry about what they cannot see. >> the challenge from lightning's it happens in remote locations with poor access and that allows those fires to get big before we can put stuff on them. >> here is a look at some more lightning from overnight. this is in santa rosa. firefighters were watching it very carefully. some monitoring it from their

hijackers simultaneously took over four planes. an investigation revealed the hijackers were members of al qaeda. it would take 10 years before the u.s. killed the mastermind, osama bin laden. an egyptian doctor who took over as head of al qaeda has not been heard from in years. with the taliban beginning control in afghanistan, experts say al qaeda could regenerate. >> the threat today is different from what we faced 20 years ago. it has evolved and morphed. in some ways, we are in a better place. in some ways, it is more complex. jobina: the vice-president will travel to shanksville, the site of the united 93 crash, before joining the president and the first lady at the pentagon. barack obama and michelle obama will attend the sir money in new

york. kumasi: local city officials will hold a 911 service this morning to honor victims and first responders who died in the terror attacks. it will be held at the theater at 10:00 a.m. julian: tomorrow, several 9/11 events will be held around the bay area. fairfield police and fire department will have a ceremony at 7:00 a.m. at the police department flagpole. at 10:00 a.m., there will be ceremony at the flight 93 memorial. tomorrow, abc news will air a special program. you can watch it from 5:00 until 10:00 tomorrow morning, right here on abc 7. kumasi: now to president biden's sweeping new plan to fight the pandemic. the president's speech comes as the delta variant cripples hospitals. 1 in 4 new cases is in children.

pres. biden: what more do you need to see? kumasi: biden is mandating vaccines for all federal workers, health care staff and companies with at least 100 employees. this will impact 80 million americans. >> i think it is critical to our economy to get people back to work in a safe manner and this is the best way to do it. >> there are certain parameters that might require that, but not every business over 100 people. what if 100 employees are gardeners and they are outside? kumasi: some people question whether the vaccine requirement is constitutional. according to the national constitution center, previous supreme court rulings have allowed officials to implement vaccine mandates. a federal mandate is more complicated. more top stories your way.

national park has become a real pain. check out this video of the wolf and a grizzly bear. gary spotted the animals on saturday. he posted the video on facebook. drew: no thank you. there is a theme of bears. you have seen a lot of lightning strikes across northern california. in the bay area, sonoma county, napa county that were hardest hit. over the last 12 hours, there were some lightning strikes in south san francisco and the east bay. the tail end of the storm is moving through sonoma county. there are still some isolated showers along the peninsula. san mateo, redwood city, 280, we have some light showers.

request to toss criminal brought by sonoma county. according to the press democrat, pg&e did not deny the facts the county presented in the case. the utility company says the criminal charges are legally insufficient. kumasi: a school crossing guard who died saving a child is being remembered. flowers and signs have been set up outside a middle school to honor ashley diaz. the 35-year-old stepped in front of an suv, pushing at least one child to safety. >> this street is horrific for dropping kids off. he is a hero. >> i feel gratitude for him. kumasi: police areolice areolice investigating. no charges have been filed against the driver who was picking up her grandson from school. the crash comes as districts are

facing a shortage of school crossing guards. julian: a mountain view patrol officer saved a baby thanks to cpr skills. he ran over and found the child was not breathing or moving. he did some chest compressions for several minutes, and finally got the baby to breathe. the baby is now back at home with family. kumasi: habitat for humanity holding a groundbreaking ceremony for a project. it is an affordable 42 home development. it will be built. the neighborhood will be -- the homes will be sold to families earning low and moderate incomes. the ceremony starts at 10:00 a.m. julian: google is making a climate promise overwater. the company has vowed to replenish 20% more water than it uses by the year 2030.

newsroom, outside of our studios at kgo. we have a rain gauge at kgo and it made a clicking sound. i had not heard that noise in months. we are lucky that despite having that lightning threat, we did get some rainfall, which helped to lessen the threat of new fires. in the last 45 minutes, we have not recorded a single lightning strike. still a couple of isolated showers. live doppler 7, we have a light shower moving through, pushing off to the north and east. 6:55, around walnut creek. palo alto, stanford, a quick hitting sprinkle off to the north and east. about 60 minutes left of activity. later today, increasing sunshine

and comfortable temperatures. kumasi: thank you. this is what firefighters have been dreading. our lake tahoe cam captured lightning strikes around 10:00 last night. this video is edited to show them together so you get a good look. this is zephyr cove on the southeast side of the lake. it looks pretty peaceful right now. it was raining through the smoky skies. this lightning is threatening the area where the caldor fire is burning. firefighters have been prepping for the storm for the storm four days but there is concern over the possibility of dry lightning sparking new fires. cal fire has not given any updates on how the lighting bite be updating the fires. julian: take a look at this show of lightning in the community of winters and yolo county around 10:00 last night.

it is about 30 miles west of sacramento. there were several lightning strikes, one after the other. lightning really lit up the sky across much of the bay area and into northern california. the dry lightning threat is mainly over for our viewing area. firefighters are concerned the conditions are still ripe to spark wildfires. amy hollyfield is live for us in clayton, tracking it all for us. amy: it is quiet right we were dazzled for a couple of hours -- head on a swivel. did you see that one? it was constant. here were some highlights. we were at a high point, catching it all. we saw some that were big bursts that lit up the sky. others that had a zigzag lightning bolt. we are looking northwest,

looking toward clayton. we saw it all. it was mostly a dry lightning storm. we did not have a huge rainstorm but it did bring some rain. we heard about five minutes of rain in martinez. there were reports of rain in the northbay. what is interesting is how we react to just a little bit of rain after going without it for so long. >> rained! >> we are in aht and we needed. >> it is good for the fires. amy: so cute -- and so true! here is a look at some lightning from overnight. this was in santa rosa. it was a busy night of activity all over the bay area. firefighters were watching it carefully, some monitoring it from their emergency operations centers. they are ready to go. they said you should be, too. they say your bags should be

private businesses with more than 100 employees will need workers to get vaccinated or undergo weekly covid testing. companies will be required to give paid time off for vaccinations. health-care workers will need to be vaccinated. over 97% of people hospitalized with covid are not vaccinated. the president said last night a vaccine mandate will protect all americans. pres. biden: our patience is wearing thin and your refusal has cost all of us. this is not about freedom or personal choice. it is about protecting yourself and those around you. jobina: the president also said a travel mask mandate has been extended to january 18. he plans to expand covid-19 testing availability and lower the cost of at-home tests. many question biden's authority to issue vaccine mandates.

julian: tomorrow marks 20 years since the 9/11 terror attacks. 3000 americans were killed after hijackers simultaneously took over four planes. president biden will attend ceremonies in manhattan, shanksville, pennsylvania and arlington, virginia. george w. bush and barack obama will participate, too. former president donald trump is providing commentary at a boxing match tomorrow night. the contra costa fire protection district has placed 416 flags outside of station 11 in clayton in honor of some victims from 9/11. each has the name of a first responder who lost their life. the memorial will be open through september 13. kumasi: tomorrow, families of passengers aboard flight 93 will

gather in shanksville, pennsylvania. one of them will be jack, whose wife lauren died when flight 93 crashed. the couple lived in san rafael. he said his wife would into action with other passengers against the hijackers. lauren was three months pregnant. >> it was excruciating going through that, especially the first father's day without being the father i expected to be, and not having my wife there. kumasi: he believes future generations need to know how those on flight 93 changed history. >> flight 93 was the first victory against hate. there is video of the dramatic crashed into the tower, there are dramatic videos of the pentagon on fire. and then there is this

nondramatic -- the real drama happened in the sky. it prevented one more dramatic image for us to witness year after year after year. >> jack is writing a book about dealing with grief. it will be dedicated to his unborn son or daughter. he is remarried and lives in pebble beach. julian: an american airlines ticket agent still grappling with guilt. he was the ticket agent at dulles airport on 9/11 when two late arriving passengers came rushing through the terminal. the men -- >> i blame myself. i thought if i had done something different. julian: the two crashed the plane into the pentagon. abc news will be airing a special program. you can watch it at 5:00 a.m.

julian: welcome back. a live look at ground zero in new york city ahead of tomorrow's 20 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. many of us remember what we were doing that day. some of the youngest adults have

no memory of the events or their parents, who died during the tragedy. jobina: back in 2001, abc news anchor diane sawyer sat down with a group of women who were pregnant and their husbands died in the september 11 attack. she was able to get this group photo of all the babies together. now, the kids have grown into young adults. she is following up with them 20 years later. the families talked about what they did to keep their dads' memories alive. >> we came up with a thing we did together. who does he live with? the angels. >> where does your dada live? >> heaven. >> who does he live with? >> god. >> who else? >> angels. >> where is your heart? that is nice. >> i appreciate everything she
