[bell ringing] >> and my beloved and my be father, jared michael al alcott. ♪ pres. biden: these memorials are really important, but they are also incredibly difficult for those affected by them because it brings back the moment they got the phone call. the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the nation pays tribute to the nearly 3000 people who died that fateful day in new york, pennsylvania, and virginia. memorials across the country

ensuring we will never forget. >> that is hard. but i do it because i respect her and miss her so much. anchor: so many in the bay area their loved ones who lost their lives far too soon. ♪ anchor: with that, we say good evening. i'm the onlin -- dion lim. lim.. memorials were held not only nationwide, but across the bay area. cornell barnard has the moving tributes to some local heroes. ♪ cornell: bagpipesagpipesagpipes through the streets of downtown san jose, the patriot day ceremony honoring lives lost on 911. memories of that september day forever etched in our minds. >> most recount in detail where

they were, what they were doing. >> we stand here today to acknowledge all who suffered and sacrificed on that day 20 years ago. >> ♪ o say star-spangled ♪ ♪ cornell: there was remembrance in the hometown of two heroes, passengers on board american airlines flight 93, who fought back against hijackers, preventing the plane to be used as a weapon. >> they got the fire extinguisher, they got the beverage cart to do what they can to careen through that cockpit door. [bell ringing] cornell: bells tolled in san francisco as the fire department and city honored the brave. >> the sacrifices that were made by the first responders as

everyone ran away from the danger they ran towards the danger. cornell: betty yong from -- betty ong another hero. she was a flight attendant on board american airlines flight 11. she was able to relay vital information about the hijackers to officials before the plane struck the world trade center. >> for 23 minutes, betty was on the phone, despite the gas, the mace, the horror, and the terror within the plane. cornell: heroes playing a role in history, their memory and courage never to be forgotten. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. dion: i spoke with ong's family this week and we will have her story coming up in the next half-hour. the san francisco rugby team honored their fallen teammate who was killed when flight 93 went down in pennsylvania. bingham, who was a gay man and a

star rugby player at cal, created a rugby team, the first all gay rugby team on the west coast. in 2002, the bingham bingham b tournament was created as a way to honor the heroic actions mark took that day, and as a way to celebrate his contributions to the lgbt community. his former teammates spoke with us earlier today and explained the silver lining to mark's death, and what he meant to sport and the gay community. >> mark's death and the publicity that came with it, he was a gay man, a rugby player, one of the people who tried to take control of the flight 93. it led to a lot of people opening their minds. all i can say is, good on you, mark. i am proud to know you. j.r.: the next bingham cup rugby tournament will take place in 2022 and is expected to be

one of the largest in the world. a memorial service was held at the flight 93 crash site in shanksville, pennsylvania. >> thomas burnett. [bell rings] dion: a total of of of of of off including the hijackers, were on this flight frofro nem san francisco. a woman's husband credited trying to stop the hijackers. tom called dina as the chaos was unfolding. >> i am on united airlines flight 93, newark to san francisco, and the airplane has been hijacked. he said that the hijackers were trying to get into the car it and they had already -- into the cockpit, and they had already knifed the guy. who do i call for a hijacking? i didn't know what i was looking for.

i finally just stopped what i was doing and called 911. dion: it is believed the plane's target was the u.s. capitol building. meantime, vice president kamala harris was among those who visited the flight 93 memorial today. she walked past the wall of names that lists all of the victims on board the plane that went down after passengers fought back against the attackers. several of the people had bay area connections, including lauren grant colas. if you look closely, you may see her name on the wall. one of the last names the vice president stopped at was todd beamer. some other big area heroes are among those who went to new york after the attacks. one local first responder who worked at ground zero says he is still suffering from health impacts. now in san jose, he shared his story with tim johns. tim: it has been 20 years, but

the memories are still vivid. >> the smells, decomposition, burning flesh, smoke. destroyed buildings. tim: back in september 2001, he was part of a california search-and-rescue team sent to new york city after the 9/11 attacks, and experience he says is almost indescribable. >> the gates of hell is probably a good way to describe it, or more of the world. tim: something he has never been able to forget. >> it was surreal. it was like the end of the world had come and i am in the middle of all this devastation. tim: but beyond the mental toll, there was also a physical price to pay. >> of the 68 people on his team, 47 of them, or about 70%, have suffered health issues in the years after 9/11. those health issues,

come over caused by the so-called plume that engulfed the rubble of the world trade center for weeks. >> we realized we had gotten ourselves into something worse than anybody had anticipated. tim: while the health problems have gotten better for some of his teammates, for others, including himself, schapelhouman says they persist to this day. >> we had people with the cough, people with skin sores. we had a number of other issues that came up right away or overtime where we went, something is wrong. tim: despite the tall it took both mentally and physically, schapelhouman says he would not hesitate to do it again, not just for those he helped in the weeks after the disaster, but also for everyone else. >> freedom isn't free. this could happen again. it may not look the same, but there is always at risk in a free society. dion: a federal health program

and compensation fund for people impacted by the attacks has been authorized until 2090. more than 80,001st responders have enrolled. new cdc data shows cancer diagnoses and medical competitions have soared in the last eight years among 9/11 survivors and first responders who inhaled toxic debris. in a palo alto tonight, coping with the trauma of this day was one of the messages at interfaith memorial. lewis peña was there as hundreds gathered in a show of unity. luz: on a day the world stood still, in the bay area, hundreds held a moment of silence to honor the lives lost on 911. >> for the victims, first responders, and the families who are striving for peace globally. luz: a moment to reflect and heal as a nation. >> to heal those who are survivors, and also to heal our

own traumas from that memory, as well as the continued trauma that continues to ensnare us. luz: former fbi agent, who was part of the terrorism tech force, spoke about the trauma this day. >> 9/11 is triple difficult for me because not only did i lose thousands of americans on the day of, but i also lost thousands of soldiers and military personnel during the 20 year war that followed. luz: every september 11, this event hopes to unite the community with a message of hope and inclusion, bringing religious leaders together in one place. >> it is about loving and caring for one another. that is what christianity wants. that is what jewish people want, hindu people. >> the best way to come together is building relationships with people, especially people who do not look like us.

luz: in the crowd, strangers became friends, sharing a meal and the bonding over the need for unity, regardless of background. >> when september 11 happened, there was intense backlash, especially against the muslim community. it is so important for us to come together as a group, as a community here. >> christians, jews, muslims, hindus, everyone of all colors, faiths, whatever, can come together. luz: in palo alto, luz pena -- ♪ abc 7 news. dion: san francisco police are investigating an exposure and in the oceanview neighborhood. police responded to a call near the oceanview playground. firefighters tell us it was possibly fireworks related. residents were told to shelter in place while the investigation was underway. firefighters say two people were injured, one with a hand injury. that they have not provided more details on whether anyone was arrested or what exactly that explosion was. this was the scene in san jose , where one person was arrested and more than 200 others were cited after police shut down an

illegal sideshow. like other cities, san jose continues to be plagued by sideshows that has led to nonfatal shootings, and sexual assaults nonfatal shootings, and sexual assaults. people head to polls. governor newsom campaigned against the recall. abc 7 news was at the saint mary's center in oakland for an event hosted by service employees international union. newsom has been focusing on the bay area in recent days, including an appearance earlier in the week with vice president kamala harris. today, he had some support from congresswoman barbara lee. >> i know what it means to take unpopular positions if it means doing the right thing. you know i know that. [applause] but you also know that governor newsom has taken unpopular positions through this deadly pandemic. he has saved lives and livelihoods.

dion: newsom has more events planned. president biden will campaign for him on. monday supporters of the recall held a rally of their own today. a group waved flags a flags a signs on an overpass to get the attention of drivers on highway 101 . people have been gathering to convince people to marc gasol their ballots. larry elder was campaigning. he started his day with a 9/11 remembrance, then at rita's diner in orange county. he hit on some familiar talking points as he pitched himself to voters. >> the reason i am running is because of the rising crime, the rise in homelessness. the rising cost of living. people are living california for the very first time. dion: john talks was in san diego today. he did not hold a rally but attended an event commemorating 9/11.

york city, lights beamed into the sky signifying the twin towers tonight. the annual art installation brought a close to a day of tributes nationwide, barking 20 years since nearly 2000 people were killed. three former presidents took part, while former president trump visited firefighters in new york. reporter: lower manhattan this september 11, 20 years after the deadliest attack on american soil. mourners gathering at the memorial, along with former presidents and president biden. bells tolling six times for the six pivotal moments of the attack, starting at 8:46 am, marking the time when american flight 11 crashed into the north tower of the world trade center. >> ♪ o say can you see ♪ ♪

reporter: the young people scores of new york singing the national anthem. the sound of bagpipes with the nas a 2977 victims of the attacks read out loud by family members. >> today of all days, we gather their memory close. reporter: at the pentagon, defense secretary lloyd austin reminding americans that we must be tireless guardians of our ideals as well as our security. >> we still uphold our values here with clear heads and fearless hearts. reporter: in shanksville, pennsylvania, where the 40 passengers and crew of united flight 93 briefly overpowered the hijackers and crashed the plane into a field, vice president kamala harris spoke of the community and courage of those strangers. vice pres. harris: we must also look to the future because in the end, i do believe that is

what the 40 were fighting for, their future and hours. reporter: former president george w. bush also delivering remarks, comparing the terror attacks to the growing domestic terrorism threat. >> they are children of the same foul spirit and it is our continuing duty to confront them. reporter: president biden and the first lady attending a wreath-laying ceremony at shanksville. those who were there were family members of those killed on flight 93. the president and dr. biden also visiting the pentagon to pay their respects. dion: bay area families are also remembering their loved ones killed on 911. betty ong was the flight attendant who made the first call to american airlines about the chaos erupting on the plane that first crashed into the world trade center. we shared with her family words from the woman who picked up the call. >> it is hard.

but i do it because her and miss her so much. dion: harry ong is not a man who seeks attention, but found the strength to meet us at cypress cemetery. >> this is betty's final resting place, of the bones we got back from her. dion: the past two decades has not been easy without his little sister. >> it has been 20 years of anguish and pain and daily reminders and remembrances for me and my family. dion: reminders of american airlines flight 11 on september 11, two thousand one, when betty and her fellow flight attendants and crew left boston's logan airport. 15 minutes en route to los angeles -- >> the cockpit is not answering the phone and there are so many

staff in business class and we cannot breathe in business class. they have may soar something. dion: that he was the first -- betty was the first to make contact. little did she or most onboard know their fate as the first plane to crash into the world trade sent her. -- the world trade center. >> what strikes me is betty's calm, her composure, and her steadiness. where does she get that from? >> that is just her. different qualities or personality. dion: on the other end of the call more than 700 miles away was vanessa midner, who was based in raleigh, north carolina. she was the first person on the ground to be alerted to the terror on board flight 11. >> this call fell into my lap. there was an immediate difference about this phone call

because -- and she did not give me her name yet. i remember her saying, it's ok. we are landing. we are making the turn to land. and the last thing she set on the phone call to me that i remember was, please pray for us. and i lost it. dion: the necessary down with an exclusive interview with joba kaplan from our sister station. >> you have to understand, betty ong to me was the hero. i am getting emotional so bear with me here. she was the hero, not me. >> that is the first time i have heard those words from vanessa. i last contacted her back in 2001 with a letter from her. she was a very private person, did not want to be contacted, or i was told to even discuss anything. 20 years later, her tribute to

betty and the others, it is very meaningful and i appreciate the fact that you were able to get a hold of her and tell us this. dion: betty's heroism was recognized by the 9/11 commission and locally by reverend norman fall, who lobbied to name this community center after betty. thousands of chinatowners served every year. it is the same community she loved and where she grew up. >> betty developed an urge to travel, just go out and see the world. i believe that is why she became a flight attendant. dion: as they continue to remember betty, they hope her life and death continue to serve a purpose to all who remember 9/11. >> what i would like the world to know, especially in these days and times of divisiveness and hatred by a lot of people, the goodness of september 11's aftermath is so positive and i

wish that we could regain a lot of those thoughts and feelings for each other and humanity. dion: such important words. itpeinth haan the ong family. harry spoke in the mission bay. he told me after so much attention with the 20th anniversary, it has been exceptionally stressful. she is looking forward to taking time away soon. ♪ one new yorker turned bay area resident pay tribute to firefighters today. phil lehman was born in new york but eventually moved to cupertino. he lives at the saratoga retirement community. for the last 10 years on 9/11, he has bagpipe for local firefighters. today, he played at seven fire stations, and for his friends.

as part of a 9/11 tribute in san francisco, a group of volunteers packed over 200,000 meals for people in need. this morning in honor of national day of service and remembrance, more than 1000 people met at the palace of fine arts to pack meals to address the ongoing food crisis here in the bay area. >> it is incredibly inspiring and it reminds us we are one community, and when we help each other, nothing makes us feel better about what we can do to make a difference. dion: that is teamwork. all meals will be distributed by the san francisco food bank to individuals and families in need. still ahead, a military ship is visiting the bay, and the preparations are already underway for fleet week. drew: we are tracking a warmer day on the way tomorrow.
