joining us. i'm dion lim. you're watching abc 7 news at 6:00 live here on abc seven, hulu live, and wherever you stream. we begin with developing news. governor newsom and his top opponent, larry elder, feverishly campaigning this weekend with just two days to go until election day. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has a look at the candidate's last-minute push. sticks could not be higher. cornell: the countdown is on. in just days, voters will decide if gavin newsom will keep his job. the last-minute push is on to energize voters for the recall election. >> california strong. cornell: governor gavin newsom in a fight for his political life, urging voters in a light to vote no on the recall. >> this recall is an extension of the big lie. it's extension of what is going on in states all across the nation that what to suppress your right to vote.

cornell: the governor's main opponent, larry elder, telling abc news when it comes to covid, he'll focus on individual freedoms. >> one of the first things i'll do is repeal the requirement for state waters that they have to be tested once a week, and they have to wear a mask at work. i don't think the science supports that. cornell: the recall election was triggered because voters were unhappy with newsom's handling of the pandemic. but a boost from national heavy hitters. >> your vote can be the difference. cornell: and better covid rates have recent polls show him keeping his job. >> no on the recall. we need to save our democracy, keep gavin newsom in office. cornell: volunteers from the african-american voter registration, education, and participation project going door to door in the neighborhood. >> our campaign is to just get out the vote. and it does not matter who, what, when, or where. we believe in voting because that is the lifeline of this united states. cornell: southern county

democrats were getting the votes out. >> candidates turn in their vote by mail voting has helped our candidates a bit. i think we are going to finish the job. cornell: republicans were busy over the weekend on this overpass, urging a yes vote on the recall. >> doing everything that he's not asking us to do, sending his kids to school while hours are sitting home. not in masks at school, dining at fine establishments. cornell: newsom needs 50% of voters to reject the recall in order to keep his job. san francisco has about a dozen ballot drop off stations across the city. they will be open through election day september 14. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. dion: on abc 7 news this morning, abc 7 news insider film until sized up the campaigns and how the two leading candidates are trying to win over voters. >> larry elder and the republicans are focusing on a lot of the problems facing the state of california.

homelessness, crime, cost-of-living. gavin newsom is focusing on the pandemic. he's trying to make it about that. in other words, larry elder is trying to make it about gavin newsom. gavin newsom is trying to make it about larry elder. and there he elder is exactly the candidate that gavin newsom wanted to run against, a very conservative republican as opposed to a moderate alternative to gavin newsom. dion: president biden is coming to california tomorrow, and he'll campaign for newsom in long beach. the top republican candidates have been focusing their campaigns on southern california, as well as the central valley. there he elder today held a news conference with rose mcgowan. mcgowan has accused first partnered for siebel newsom of trying to broker a deal with her and harvey weinstein's lawyer in 2017. mcallen was one of the women who accused weinstein of sexual assault, and she says in 2017, she called her and asked what the law firm could do to make her happy.

warning as pediatric cases continue to rise. more than 50,000 schoolchildren were denied with covid-19, the agency urging parents not to seek out a vaccine for children under 12 because they are not eligible, saying children are not small adults. >> we don't know the right dosing for kids under 12. we haven't seen the data. so we really want to let the data drive this process. elwyn: the country seeing no fewer than one hundred thousand cases every day the past four weeks, hospitals feeling the strain, icus in seven states close to running out of beds, kentucky now calling in more than 300 national guard members to help with the surge. >> we're already at my capacity. we're already stretched so thin. elwyn: health experts continue to say this is a pandemic of the unvaccinated. >> those who are unvaccinated were about 4.5 times more likely to get covid-19, over 10 times

wildfire is forcing evacuations this morning. the hopkins fire started this afternoon at about 12 matters -- 12 miles north of ukiah. it's near the community west of lake mendocino. there are reports of structures going up in flames. calfire says it has already burned 300 acres. new details onnnn 65% containment tonight, just under 219,000 acres have burned. today, a stretch of highway 50 from icehouse road to kuipers opened after being shut down for weeks. calfire says drivers will still see firefighters along the road mopping up the area. in the north bay, witnesses areb crediting to stop the wildfire. they found a man surrounded by several people. they told police the men lit something on fire, dropped to the ground, and is trying to fan

dion: in the east bay, a new police chief will have his first day on the job tomorrow. the previous chief of police in seaside in monterey. before that, he spent 26 years with fort worth, texas police department. is also president of the california police chiefs association. in the south bay, vta resumed a light rail service, running from bay point station to santa teresa. the agency is slowly adding service back after the deadly mass shooting at the railyard back in may. service on the green and orange lines resumed last month. those lines served allen rock,

and old iron size. the vta is also offering free fares on light rail trains through the end of the month. heads up drivers in the east bay, caltrans is claiming to do work on the kolkata tunnel, and that means one of the borders will be closing overnight. it will affect traffic heading westbound on highway 24 toward oakland. caltrans is closing for maintenance monday, tuesday, and wednesday from 10:00 p.m. until 4:30 in the morning. the rest of the tunnels will remain open. it was a duet today with hardly strictly bluegrass, teaming up with the san francisco department of public health. ♪ opera house, where the live performance took place outside and on the inside, people could get vaccinated or tested for covid. the idea for today's event came for organizers of the music festival. harley strickler bluegrass canceled in person shows at

70's. we cooled off to 69 degrees right now, 81 in san jose, 60 in the city, still warm in the north bay, 82 currently. overnight tonight again, some cloud cover along the coastline, mainly clear skies for a lot of us the next 12 hours. we'll drop to the mid-to-upper 50's, 54 in the city, 57 in oakland, cool in the north bay, santa rosa down to 51. live doppler seven, what we're tracking is a quiet pattern across much of california. high-pressure off to the south and east is supplying that warmer weather inland today. and it'll stay that way tomorrow, as well, so temperatures will be slightly above average to start the new week. future trak temperatures by monday morning, 10:00 a.m., warming into the 60's and into the 70's. by lunchtime, starting to get warm inland. we're in the 80's. but tomorrow afternoon, many cities in then going into the 90's once again. a close look at highs on your

monday, 94 in antioch, 93 in concorde, 77 in oakland, so warm in the east bay, 87 in fremont, up to 60 in the city, 90 in napa as part of the north bay will be hot. up to about 75 degrees in santa cruz. we will find a bit of a breeze tomorrow afternoon. you can see by about 3:00 p.m. on our monday, we'll have winds out of the north league testing anywhere from 15-25 miles per hour. and what that will do is that it will bring some smoke into our atmosphere, so elevated smoke once again. we'll find changes to our air quality. here is near surface smoke forecast. once those winds kick up out of the north by about 3:00, we do know it's a little more smoke in our atmosphere. all in all, it should remain below unhealthy standards. as we head into monday, good to moderate, more areas in that moderate category. as we head into tuesday, some fresh air moves in here. by tuesday, most of us will be
