blocks. crews just finished up repairs. it happened in san francisco's crocker amazon neighborhood. j.r. stone was there and spoke with neighbors left with the mess. >> car tires pounded by pouring down the streets of san francisco after a water main break in the city's crocker amazon neighborhood. >> a lot of water there. water coming out of it. >> fast water flowing down hills. something that could be seen from sky seven midafternoon. the break was so bad and up on the hill at the same time, water flowed more than a quarter of a mile down the road to the outer mission. >> pressurized pipes. when you have a break like that, the water flies up. it is how the system operates. >> it did not just flow down the street. at least two homes were flooded. we were there as residents scooped up water and dumped it in their backyard. >> i've never seen a flood that

severe. came close to everyone's house. everyone rushing outside so they don't get flooded. water damage is pricey. >> the water main that broke right here was 88 years old. at this point, they tell us it is unclear what caused the break. water service was limited for some in the six block radius. crews fortunately now have the upper hand on a scary situation for those living in the neighborhood. >> like a waterfall. like we were in yosemite and the water was pouring down the river. >> everyone came to help each other, which was a good thing. i've never seen that before. >> j.r. stone, abc7 news. >> health is a topic we focus on in building a better bay area. we have the latest covid headlines. the cdc has moved california back into the high rate of transmission category a day after dropping into the lower substantial category. an fda panel is set to debate

the need of a booster shot. pfizer pushing for approval. some on the panel are not convinced it is necessary. public health officials say halloween parties and fall gatherings could drive up the number of cases, even though 90% of the population is vaccinated. the expected rise in cases has officials planning covid vaccine clinics for five to 11-year-olds, even though the vaccine has yet to be authorized. abc7 news reporter kate larsen spoke with parents and county health leaders. >> the fda has yet to authorize a covid vaccine for children under 12. the marion county county office of education is saving dates for on-campus covid vaccines for their youngest students. >> we are really excited. >> alfred has two sons ages five to 11. >> proving it is safe for kids, we will be on board. >> ethan is ready to get the shot. >> i really want to run

cross-country, but if you run cross-country, you either have to have a vaccine or get tested. . that would be a hassle. >> the timeline for emergency use authorization for a code vaccine for five to 11-year-olds has been a moving target. first we heard this summer, then december. the latest information suggests october. but first, pfizer needs to submit the trial data for five to 11-year-olds. that has not happened yet. >> marin county has always try to anticipate what is coming next. >> the superintendent of schools says if the fda authorizes pfizer's vaccine in october, she plans to start vaccine clinics on october 23 or october 30 at three schools, including miller creek middle. >> our hope is we will have 75% of our five to 11-year-olds, which is 21,000 in marin county fully vaccinated, prior to the winter recess. >> if you asked me a year ago, i

would say i probably am not vaccinating my kid. but delta was a game changer for our community. reporter: dr. lisa santora plans to vaccinate her young children as soon as possible. >> as a parent, i see the harms of the vaccine as being extremely low. the benefits my children will gain by being vaccinated is if they are exposed to covid positive students, they will be able to stay in school. reporter: officials don't anticipate mandating the vaccine for students at this time. kate larsen, abc7 news. larry: the west contra costa school district can become the first in the bay area to require the school -- students get vaccinated. a vote is set for tuesday. the south bay ramped up efforts to prepare for the wave of afghan refugees. a town hall featuring lawmakers and local agencies reviewing the settling efforts. amanda del castillo learns hundreds are already here with more on the way.
