>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> this vaccination is not a bad thing, is to help us the students. >> a message and a movement. one bay area school district is ramping up its effort to get students vaccinated and kick hesitancy to the curb. i am dion lim. >> i am larry beil. we are live on abc 7, hulu live and wherever you stream. oakland unified admits it has hit a wall when it comes to convincing most students to get vaccinated. the school district is mandating vaccines for all students aged 12 and up. the senior education reporter tells us the district is working hard to convince students the vaccine is indeed and safe --

indeed safe. >> a districtwide student government meeting to discuss the issues that affect them, including covid. >> i feel like i need th feel l because people don't always follow the precautions on covid. >> there was not enough time it has even been a year. we can see all the side effects it can cause. >> the district test tried everything from having weekly vaccine clinic to acknowledge and students who get vaccinated. today, a doctor in oakland was brought into talk at the student government meeting and answer the questions. here is what open unified is concerned. 75% of their students who are eligible to get the vaccine have received the first dose. close to 60% are fully vaccinated.

the cdc says unvaccinated students are 10 times more likely to be hospitalized if they get sick then back -- if they get sick. >> school board vice president, sam davis was at today possible student meeting. if the superintendent to come up with a plan of how you ever met the policy. natalie said if the mandate goes through, she will get vaccinated. >> my education is far more important. i don't want to be out of school learning when i could be in school learning. 7 news. >> in covid-19 headlines, more californians are getting

vaccinated, just over 70% have received at least one shot. the fda debate has been delayed. it has been postponed 10 days. meanwhile, moderna just released to data showing waning immunity of its vaccine, stressing the need for booster shots. stephanie sierra joins us now for more on how this may impact the booster shot rollout. >> this is the second time the fda advisory committee has postponed this meeting. we are told they don't believe they have enough data yet. that means our rollout will be delayed as any decision on a formal recommendation is going to be pushed back for at least a few weeks. the clock is ticking fast for covid-19 booster shots, four days out from when the white house initially aimed to have the rollout across the u.s..

ucsf here. she says that date is a goal that will likely be pushed back even further. they delayed yet another meeting to review the booster data. >> they will meet the week of the 27th. >> the meeting pushed back on the same day that they released a new data, highlighting the waning immunity of its vaccine. >> the data is very similar to what we saw from pfizer. >> the study analyzed breakthrough cases and more than 11,000 people vaccinated between december of 2020 and march of this year. they found 36% fewer since been breakthrough infections among people who followed up ignorance after receiving their first dose compared to those who followed up 13 months after their first dose. the company says this supports the need for a third shot. >> do you agree with that? >> i don't agree for the general public right now. again, i think we need to see

more real-world data to say what happens farther out. >> dr. and lou agrees. >> there is not a ton of data to say how much the third dose provides a significant benefit. we are getting to the point where there are not a lot of first dose is being given anymore and people are wondering how else we can protect our communities. questec especially as other countries are not waiting around. england began ministering -- administering third charts for health workers over the age of 50. >> do you think we are missing an opportunity to vaccinate people who are vulnerable? >> it will not be a clinically significant opportunity we are missing. >> once a formal recommendation is made, ucsf will be administering boosters almost immediate lay after. we heard a similar timeline

health department across the bay area expecting the rollout to be underway within a week or less once a decision is made. live in the newsroom, stephanie sierra, abc 7 news. >> in the east bay, a group of parents and students are fighting for equal education, something they say they are not getting from the pittsburgh unified school district. the aclu filed a lawsuit for what they believe is a violation of student constitutional rights. julian glover joining us now. you have been reporting on alleged discriminatory discipline practices at pittsburgh unified and they were named in this lawsuit. >> you got that exactly right. we have been reporting on this for several months now. black, latino and disabled students facing excessive discipline, forcing them out of pittsburgh unified classrooms at alarming rates. we have been hearing from these families and sharing their stories of frustration and setback. they have been filing these complaints with the state and now they are open to courts

forcing change. >> they pushed me out without even trying to understand. >> we heard the story in february. forced out of the traditional classroom and into an independent education program with no interaction with other students and limited weekly instruction. the suspension started in the third grade for typical childlike behavior. >> my daughter at 11 years old was sent to a mental health unit that further traumatized her. >> they are being reps ended by the defense fund in a lawsuit, the california permanent education in the state superintendent for schools, tony thurman. >> we want them revamp their disciplinary and education system. >> pittsburgh has a

discriminatory >> they are to privately students of their fundamental right to education. >> a data analysis from our previous reporting has shown that pittsburgh unified has the highest suspension rate for a black student in the day -- in the bay area and lack girls in the seventh and eighth grade reform -- four times more likely to be suspended. >> it is the racist practices that are happening that are pushing students out. what's -- >> janet shows responded to the lawsuit. she said that we share the same priorities. that all students, lynwood to -- students of color receive education. >> i wish they understood the level of trauma we have been through. jessica has removed her daughter from pittsburgh schools.

>> take a look, someone has just been rescued from the cliffside. just moments ago, csp helicopters pulled the person up to safety. this is just on the north side of the golden gate bridge. as of right now, we don't have information at two had a person ended up stuck on that cliffside but good to see that rescue their in progress. >> abc 7 committed to building a better bay area, that includes tracking how the pandemic is tracking our economy. the supply has hit a paint problem. there is not enough paint to go around. that means they are scrambling to find what they need. leslie brinkley covering the issue. >> paint is scarce and costly for the foreseeable future according to contractors and painters. store owners are struggling to keep product on the shelves. >> prices are going up, prices are changing.

materials are unavailable. >> this paint store owner says every day he only gets one out of every three gallons he orders. customers are shocked by having to delay projects. prices have jumped over 10%. >> it is a perfect storm of things. there has been a worldwide shortage of metal cans. they have been unavailable. in the store you start to see a lot of plastic cans. the big freeze down in texas did a lot of damage down there, raw material plants, productions literally stop. >> at a shortage of truck drivers and a backup of containers stacked with ports, painting specialty tools like sanders are on back order for up to eight months. >> you have a shortage of major materials across the board, plywood, paint. contractors say the biggest challenge beside the cost is the time. can they even get the materials? things like windows and doors.

it is level one on the storm impact scale. first thing saturday, you will see some damp roadways because of drizzle. in the evening there is a chance of some rain in the north bay. sunday morning is when we are expecting those scattered showers. the atmospheric river will soak the pacific northwest, this is the first of the season. by the time the front reaches us, you will notice it starts to break apart. a few showers in the north bay. i sunday morning, you're looking at spotty showers and then it is pre-much gone but at this point, we will take any moisture we can get because we are so desperate. these are just estimates so be prepared, have your billing handy. it will not be a washout for your weekend but much needed rain. up to the north, you're looking at almost two inches here. just over an inch in eureka. tahoe will see just over five hundredths of an inch.
