day just one day after a series of stories on the growing crime problem in oakland, another incident. >> this is a sobering reminder of how dangerous it is in oakland. three shootings last night alone. the level of violence in the city continues to be intolerable. >> in oakland police officer is recovering after being shot in the leg during an hour's law incident that began with a 911 call, lead to a gun battle and then a two hour standoff. >> it comes in a week when oakland has already surpassed 100 homicides for the year. laura anthony has more. >> this is a sober reminder of how dangerous it is in the city of oakland. >> a 911 call about a man acting erratically quickly turned violent. police say the man shot one

officer almost as soon as he and his partner arrived. >> this is a difficult day for us. a day that we are very fortunate because the officer is not being treated for life-threatening injuries. >> we came within a hair's breath of losing officers today. they responded to a citizen call and they are ambushed, engaging in a gun battle. the suspect ran to an apartment lobby where the team spent hours negotiating with him. >> we don't know if he had any additional firearms. while we were challenging him, he made multiple statements that he wanted to die and he wants us to kill him. >> he eventually turned himself over to police. >> our ultimate desire is for him to make the choice to peacefully surrender. >> a five block stretch remained closed for most of the day.

this incident is just the latest example of how their officers are increasingly at risk on the streets of oakland. >> what happened this morning and every morning in oakland is unacceptable. at one point while the residence wake up and understand that having a running gun battle with police officers is not how you want your city to be. >> in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. because violence is a major issue in oakland. we dedicated extra time to break down the issue and we at possible solutions including what chief armstrong is doing. >> the man accused of killing a woman in san luis obispo 25 years ago will stand trial for her murder. paul flores is accused of first-degree murder. they say he either raped or

attempted to rape 19-year-old kristin smart before killing her in his cal poly dorm room. a small setback today for scott peterson in his efforts to get a new trial based on alleged your misconduct. the judge denied the defense request to take a deposition from the jury at the center of the misconduct allegations. the judge said she would allow subpoenas to be issued, requiring the jury attend a future hearing. something peterson's attorney does not expect will happen anytime soon. >> i think given the circumstances of what came to light today or what the judge was concerned about today, i know she said she would like to get this hearing and it seems that would be difficult. >> peterson's attorney is demanding a new trial, claiming the juror lighted during the jury selection process. the jury eventually convicted

peterson of murdering his pregnant wife, lacey and their unborn son. the court overturned his death sentence. the judge set a hearing for october 6 to set a date for this. on highly publicized, high-profile crimes. the unit will go from two investigators up to six. the department will also expand its community ambassador program from a positions to 25. ambassadors are retired officers who are employed to deter crime. >> people and communities who want these pharmacies and businesses in their communities. people are able to keep their jobs and we are able to serve san francisco. >> the district attorney says he applauds expanding anti-retail crime efforts.

he adds his office has led discussions with the governor and state legislators for more money to fund this initiative. >> right now, an influential panel of advisors to the cdc is trying to answer the question on the minds of many americans. who should get covid-19 booster shots and when? the panel is focusing on the possibility of a scaled-back booster shot program for older people. manufacturers claimed booster shots can significantly increase protection against covid but experts are not convinced everyone needs one. >> we are learning -- living in a world that we call corrective science. >> the cdc meeting continues tomorrow, the food and drug administration is expected to make a decision on boosters for the general population in the coming weeks. >> in the east bay, contra costa county is requiring proof of vaccination to eat at a restaurant, go to a bar, jim, county hopes this will prevent

the place from becoming hotspots for the virus. ryan, what is the reaction like so far? >> downtown is full of restaurants that are not implementing these changes. what will happen as people go up and down the street trying to find a place to eat? they will be bombarded with signs like this one asking for a full covid vaccination or negative test. >> it is a move that some say was long overdue. >> i don't understand what the pushback is. >> they implemented a new mandate wednesday requiring people going to gyms, bars and restaurants to show a negative covid test result or proof of full vaccination. >> we know these facilities like restaurants and bars and gyms are high-risk facilities where covid can be spread if people take their masks off to get a drink where they are breathing very heavily while they exercise, covid can spread

craig's a big day for several bay area restaurants. the michelin guide has released his newest list of restaurants and nearly 20 bay area restaurants made the list including spinning bones as well as houma and dumpling home in san francisco. they offer a full meal with dessert for around $40 or less. that is the price point. restaurants and oakland and sonoma also made the list. dustin dorsey takes us to two restaurants in the south.
