>> the cdc has signed off on a third dose of the pfizer vaccine for older and vulnerable americans. late tonight, the agency's director has used her authority to add a key group of workers to the list of those who are eligible, ushering in a new phase in the fight against covid-19. i am dan ashley. ama: i am ama daetz. dan: the cdc recommends to a third shot six months after the initial series. here is who is eligible, people 65 years of age and older, residents in long-term care facilities, people 18 to 64 with underlying medical conditions, and those who are at increased risk of exposure because of occupational or institutional settings. the last group is an addition -- in addition to what the cdc advisory panel recommended earlier today. ama: actions we anticipate will do

the greatest good. the recommendation alliance with the booster authorization. right now, this only applies to the pfizer vaccine because it admitted for work first. the cdc will review recommendations for boosters estimate as their data is available. in california, the state health department is ready to provide additional doses. >> we anticipate that in the next many weeks that we could see roughly 170 to anywhere up to 50,000 californians in the different categories coming forward to get that at additional shot. >> even with updated recommendations, the cdc's recommendation is a dramatic scaling back of the biden administration's plan announced last month to dispense boosters for nearly everyone to shore up their production. dan: regardless, many people in san francisco have already had their booster shots. in august, san francisco hospital decided to give out

extra pfizer or moderna shots who originally got single-dose johnson & johnson back. moderna boosters are only authorized for certain immunocompromised people but many people have gone to pharmacies on their own for a third dose. >> when i spoke to my doctor, she said perfectly fine. i'm happy i did it. at 85, what do i these? dan: bay area health officials said they will rely on pharmacies to administer the shots. ama: the state is considering a vaccine mandate for all eligible students. two school districts have voted to require covert vaccines for students 12 and older. those are oakland unified and piedmont. two others are now discussing it. contra costa unified and berkeley. a statewide mandate would bolster their actions. governor newsom says the state could have a decision soon. >> this is on the table, being debated and over the next few days, we will come out with some

recommendations. ama: the district has time to inform students and parents. it's not clear if students who refuse to get the vaccine will be banned from school. the mandate does not apply to those younger than 12. if you have questions about covid-19 vaccines, you can ask our team. go to abc7news.com/vaccine and click on the big blue box. >> imagine you are driving your car and this silent ball bearing comes in your window and hit sue. it will kill you. dan: metal ball bearings being launched at buildings and car windows along highway 87. there have been dozens of incidents in recent months damaging are pretty. the stretch running straight through the heart of downtown. the damage already totals more than $.5 million pair that is what we are talking about here. investigators tell amanda del castillo that they fear this terrible dangerous behavior is only escalating.

amanda: evidence of damage caused by metal ball bearings. these are items the district attorney's office says are being aired at buildings, homes, and cars at potentially lethal speeds. >> these are about the size of a quarter going over 100 miles per hour. >> the captain with the bureau of investigation says behavior by the person or people responsible is only getting worse. the crime now coming off the freeway. two weeks ago, a woman in her car was targeted and had her windows blown out. >> definitely unacceptable. reckless behavior. and if they are doing it just for fun, they have to think about the fact that somebody could get hurt and not just, you know, minor, but injuries. could be deadly. >> residents living along the corridor say it's enough to make them consider a detour. clips that makes me not want to take the 87 anymore, hearing

about the ball bearings. >> i will have to take the inside road after that. >> since march, there have been 30 incidents. and off 87, the sap center and the san jose museum of art also saw damage. investigators say the person is using a slingshot to launch metal ball bearings, already causing more than .5 million dollars in damage. the district attorney says this is not just property damage, adding that people and live and work on those windows. with safety in mind, the da's office announced a $20,000 reward in the search for the shooter. >> imagine, you are driving your car and this silent ball bearing hits you, it will kill you. >> abc 7 news. >> governor newsom announced he has secured federal funding to fight the fire in shasta county. earlier today, a palo alto woman was arrested on suspicion of arson.

the 30-year-old walked out of the brush near where the fire started and approached firefighters, requesting medical aid. officers came to suspect she started the fire. if her 5500 acres and 25 structures have been destroyed, 5% contained. the multiple fires burning in northern california right now are creating hazy conditions in the play area so let's get to sandip patel. >> when you take a look at a time lapse from earlier tonight, that smoke is actually creating the reddish here you are looking at here. hazy sunset from our emeryville camera and you may have seen it if you are out and about tonight. that will continue which is why an advisory is up for tomorrow and saturday. moderate air quality tomorrow, the worst of it and over the weekend, we will start to see an improvement saturday night and sunday. looking at the satellite picture from earlier, a lot of smoke

from multiple fires burning around the date. their quality alert is in effect for the central valley and the central valley has had some poor air quality. it is still like that around the to larry area as you take a look at our air quality. i will be back with a closer look at when it will turn much cooler around here in the temperatures, coming up. dan: governor newsom is committing $15 billion to fight climate change and drought in california. he signed a package today as a new report finds californians are falling far short on the goal to save water. usage has been cut by 1.8% since last year, not nearly enough, officials say. they plan to expand their north san jose water purification plant and it wants to build a new solidity in los altos. they helped create a drought resistant locally controlled water source. ama: in the east bay, people in danville are worried for their pets and neighbors.

tim johns talked to residents who are asking for help to keep the neighborhoods safe. >> drive down the streets and you are met with scenes of picturesque suburbs but over the summer, that picture got a little darker. >> within 10 seconds, it had picked up our dog right there. >> she was in her backyard with her dog when out of nowhere, a coyotes snatched her away. >> i'm an only child so she was like my little sister and my parents loved her to death as well. and it was horrible. >> her story is one of an increasing number of coyote attacks in the area. this video shared with abc 7 by another neighbor shows a coyote attacking her dog outside her home but it's not just animals that the residents are worried about. t■hey fearwhatcould come next. >> it is super important that we focus on it right now and o prevent it from happening to a human because if it is a human,

it will probably be a little kid or baby. >> she said she was told by other people that wildlife authorities could only take action if a human was attached. the community feeling overwhelmed by a situation they believe is getting increasingly worse. >> it makes me feel like they are putting coyotes about humans. >> they both say they don't want the coyotes to be killed. they just want to have the threat removed. >> if they can at least be removed to a natural area, the woods, the forest, something where they can do their and not be impacting that, it will help. >> they are just asking for a little help. in danville, tim johns, abc 7 news. >> somehow could be on the way area robert told abc 7 in a statement that we are working with fish and wildlife. they asked us to reap all incidents so a clear picture can be made on where the

wyoming issuing a federal arrest warrant. the fbi says the warrant is related to his activities following gabby petito's death. he is accused of withdrawing at least $1000 using a debit card and pin number that were not his. this as we learn of a possible change in the timeline of gabby petito's last known siding. a witness claimed she saw gabby with laundry at a restaurant in jackson hole, wyoming, august 27, three days after officials originally she was last seen. >> his demeanor, the way he was acting. how persistent he was, he freaked me out. she was emotional. she was crying. he seemed kind of embarrassed. reena: the couple were in an angry confrontation with restaurant staff. gabby trying to con him down. >> he was screaming. he was really angry area he was

going in on the hostess. >> the restaurant is just outside ground teton national park. her body was discovered earlier this week. the restaurant confirmed to abc news that the couple were there and they say they are now speaking with the f the eye but the agency has not confirmed the incident. the city of utah has an investigation into the police department's handling of that incident, caught on body camera on august 12 when a witness called 911 to report a possible domestic dispute, officials say there does not to be a breach of policy but they add that appropriate action will be taken if the investigation finds otherwise arid rena roy, new york. >> as the annual dream force convention wrapped up in san francisco, i had an exclusive chance to sit down with the salesforce ceo for his only face-to-face interview of the event. i asked him about the announcement that salesforce will relocate any employee in texas who is no longer

will see an improvement in our air quality and the temperatures will drop sir today, upper 90's to low 100s inland. hades inland, 60's curbside, dropping down some more on. it's going to feel like late fall for sure. low 80's inland. these near the coastline. right now, temperatures in the 50's to the 80's so hanging onto some of the warmth. golden gate bridge camera showing you how foggy it is. areas of dense fog in the morning. easy and hot in the afternoon and much of their weather coming your way saturday through monday. if -- it's not just the fog near the coast what you will see higher clouds overhead as well area tomorrow afternoon, the fog will hang low near the coast and the rest of you will be looking at sunshine and it will be hazy. temperatures in the 50's and 60's out the door. give yourself that extra time for the commute, especially if it takes you across the coastal regions. highway one will be thick fog.

69 in san francisco, 66 in half moon bay. temperatures backing up a little bit, especially england. 76 in oakland, mid 90's in fairfield. in livermore. 85 degrees in san jose and 79 in palo alto. as you take a look at next week, tuesday, still looking at the possibility of a few showers here. it's just a chance, one model, but the pacific northwest and northern california will certainly get the rain. as you look at the rainfall estimates were to stay, they will be picking up close to one inch around portland. not out of the question, about 207 inch in san francisco. possibly. hazy skies. drizzle and cooler weather as we hit the weekend. dusty conditions expected for monday and a chance of some showers on tuesday. the best possibility is in the north bay and the biggest change you will notice is you will get to go from short-sleeved weather to longsleeve weather.
