for years, especially recently as american troops withdrew from afghanistan. here's abc 7 news reporter. tears of joy size of relief andd perhaps most of all a sign of hope really excited for this one that at least i was able to save wife and two of my saturday afternoon ahmad sayer zia his wife and their two children safely landed in san francisco for weeks. they've been trying to get out of afghanistan after its fall to taliban forces. you can see a dead mission that walking all around. there's no smile and face of any of them zia was finally able to get out with the help of heidi kuhn the founder of marine base nonprofit roots of peace and organization that works in war-torn. replacing landmines with farm land zia has worked with the organization for a decade where he has helped with the planting of over 6 million fruit trees across afghanistan benefiting over 1 million afghan farmers

and families to see the courage of this family the kindness the grace the eloquence that they are has always represented. it's a journey that's been anything but easy with all the correct paperwork in hand zia and his family tried nine times. to fly out of kabul international airport only to be repeatedly turned away during two of the attempts zia was beaten by and soldiers and even had bullets shot at him started fighting shooting in near to my face, even i was feeling that the heat of those bullets which were coming following their safe landing in california hyun held a reception for the family at her north bay home. it is to me just a small miracle that this family is here standing on my home. it was a time for celebration, but also reflection zia tells me the stress and pain of journey was worth it. not least of all for his children.

11:10 pm
help direct residents. with epic drought conditions fierce wildfires have burned across california this summer but finding the safest evacuation route isn't easy in this town of mountains and trees the question is, how could we clear the hillside in the canyons? the best way to do that calculation drills are a big deal here in mill valley because there's only two ways out of town cities working with google to identify traffic bottlenecks and the safest routes out. he splite there avenue is one of those evacuation routes on a normal day. it can be a traffic jam. so our goal is to determine how we could get those streets freed up quickly down near the freeway. there's a new plan of using a contraflow to get all the cars out in one direction. the past few years have been anything but a drill in the north bay massive wild. bears chasing thousands from their homes. we've seen the fires and 2019 and it's a question of when is
