>> this is abc 7 news. >> tonight, families on both sides of the bay channeling grief into calls for change. today is a national remembrance day for murder victims. families say they want no one else to have experienced what they have. good evening and thank you for joining us. ryan curry was at remembrance tonight in san francisco where families were joined by the police chief. reporter: pictures and heavy hearts. it was a somber evening at city hall as dozens remembered the lives of murder victims. attendees say this year feels more emotional with the amount of homicides happening. >> every time i hear a homicide that happens, whether it be in

san francisco or any other state, it hits home. reporter: her son was killed in 2014. she came out to honor her son and the others who died. she does not anyone else to live in fear. >> enough is enough. >> we have lost so much already and it has to stop. reporter: the bay area has seen numerous homicides this year, especially in oakland were last week the city reported its 100th homicide. local leaders say they want the violence to stop and everyone in the bay area to come together. >> work together not only to make survivors whole,but to reduce and prevent these types of incidents moving forward. reporter: he said one of the hardest parts of his job is telling families about the loved ones they have lost. >> after they have lost the person they love, never goes

away. reporter: the organizers say having an event like this is important because it helps them remember the person who died but to help families deal with the pain. >> we need to stop the killing and start the healing because this is about all of us or none of us and everybody has to pay attention. dion: a vigil was held in in inn oakland where more families are now grieving. most recent homicides in the city happened early this morning. two men ages 21 and 26 were shot and killed. the bay area news group reports they were brothers and shot outside their home after getting into a confrontation with other men. the shooting brings the total number homicides in oakland to 102 so far this year. last week we dedicated a team of reporters to covering the homicides in oakland this year. you can see our stories at our website, abc7news.com. shifting gears taking a live

the age group with a lower dosage of the vaccine helped them develop coronavirus fighting antibody levels that were just as good as people who got regular strength shots. >> if they approve it, we will be ready with our manufacturing. it's one third the dose. dion: the pfizer ceo says he believes it is possible to provide both booster shots and first doses after the cdc approved a third shot for seniors, medically vulnerable americans, and frontline workers. in california, counties are preparing to unveil their distribution plans as most pharmacies will be able to administer a third shot for those eligible. tomorrow on good morning america, the cdc director was shell road linsky will be on explaining her decision last week to overrule her own advisory panel and broaden who is eligible for boosters.

dion: the former stanford sailing coach it was the first person charged in the infamous varsity blues admissions scandal is breaking his silence to good morning america. he says he did nothing wrong in his new book, how the college admissions scandal ruined an

innocent man's life. he's wrapping up his sentence of two years probation and six months of home confinement along with a $10,000 fine. he remembers a sentencing day and all the things said about him. >> i had this guy telling the whole world and every camera i am the worst human being in the world. and at some point after this long soliloquy, i'm horrible, i should just go to jail. i am just a horrible person. dion: he admitted to accepting $610,000 in what he says were donations to the university sailing program from college applicants. he did not keep any of the money. he still lives and works in the bay area is no longer employed by stanford. you can catch his interview tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. on good morning america here on abc 7 mornings. and his book is out on tuesday. calfire commanders at the fawn fire burning in shasta county committed to answering tough questions from the evacuated

residents after a community meeting turned he did this weekend. >> i personally read the questions and want to ensure they are going to be answered. i have them here with me and will ensure they are provided with the proper individual when that time comes this evening. dion: that commitment today came after upset residents grilled calfire officials last night during an informal meeting. one resident amended to know what he saw firefighting aircraft pulled off the front lines last wednesday. >> nobody is answering why the planes were pulled off. why didn't they keep going until that -- was out? >> it is a very difficult and emotional time for everyone involved. all we can ask is that as we provide empathy to the public, that we get a little of that back to us because we are all doing our best. dion: calfire officials say they did not pull aircraft off the fire that day and that they flew until nighttime.

dion: a teen artist known for his paintings of celebrities is days away from releasing his first book. we met with tyler gordon tonight who even on a sunday was painting his latest masterpiece. >> thank you for having us over. reporter: this is tyler's san jose home were almost every wall space is covered with his paintings. this is what he calls his happy place. which is your latest one? >> this one right here. i just painted it.

reporter: his passion for painting started five years ago when he said god spoke to him. >> mom, mom, god's in my room. i was like, don't go into the light. he said no, i am going to be a painter and change the world. reporter: and he has. at 15 years old he has had his paintings featured at multiple galleries including the beverly center in los angeles. he's got aa -- just on he was painting in front of thousands of people in detroit. now he is holding his latest achievement, his first book. >> number one on amazon. and is not even out yet. it really amazes me. reporter: tyler is purged -- parson --

tyler is partially deaf and has a stutter. >> everybody in this book had struggles. and they overcame those struggles just like us with dreams and they kept following the passion. reporter: he still has many dreams to accomplish. >> i promised my mom i would buy her a house next year. i am supporting my family. it is definitely a big thing for me. reporter: how many paintings do you need to sell to get there? >> i don't know, but i will get there. reporter: i had an idea. let me introduce you to tyler. >> hello. >> i remember seeing you on tv, on the news. you have a lot of talent. >> thank you.

>> she was an example for almost a live by, to enjoy every moment in his beautiful world as she did, love and give love to all like she did. dion: friends and family remember gabby petito today, one week after her body was found in wyoming. her boyfriend, brian laundrie, is a person of interest in the case, but he is still missing. here's more on how she's being remembered. reporter: hundreds of mourners gathered to remember gabby petito. her father hopes people will be inspired by her story. >> if there is a trip you guys want to take, take it. now. if there's a relationship you are in that might not the best thing for you, leave it. now. reporter: her stepfather says she taught him you can always make money but you cannot make up for lost time. >> she's an example for all of

confirming fbi agents were at their home sunday, requesting personal items belonging to their son. the reward for information leading to his capture now stands at $30,000. dion: in san diego, an investigation has been launched after a woman and her toddler fell to their deaths at a major league baseball game. yesterday a mother and her two-year-old son fell from the third level of petco park just before a padres game. officers said the father was nearby and witnessed the incident. police do not know if the fall was intentional or an accident. they did say the deaths appear to be suspicious. developing news out of montana were authorities are trying to figure out what caused the derailing of an amtrak train that killed three people. yesterday the train was on its way from chicago to seattle when eight of the 10 cars flew off the tracks. over 150 passengers were on board.

several people made in stable condition at the hospital tonight. passengers are describing the terrifying scene when the train went off the tracks. >> i went on down to the floor and braced myself with my legs under the seat in front of me and covered my head with my arms. >> i was definitely in incredible shock. the scene was just chaotic. dion: amtrak executives say they are deeply saddened and are working to help the victims and their families. house speaker nancy pelosi has pushed back a vote on the $1 trillion partisan infrastructure built. the house was supposed to bill -- vote on the bill tomorrow but that is being pushed back until thursday. democrats remain divided on key parts of the bill. progressive members are demanding upgraded focus on social safety net programs on a broader $3.5 trillion package. the delay will buy some time for negotiations. the house will start debating the bill tomorrow. whether it is two or four wh

eels, the greening of transportation in america is picking up fuel. more on the new green machines and what is driving so many people to make the switch to electric. >> i like the way it drives. i like the technology. reporter: elizabeth has been driving her new tesla model three just one week. >> this is my first time plugging it in and it took me a couple minutes to figure it out. reporter: what made her switch? >> my dad has one and he loves it. he tells his friends. they are getting them. one of my older brothers has it. a lot more of his friends have been getting it. reporter: the future is finally here. the market for electric vehicles is booming. the infrastructure to meet demand is rapidly expanding. >> it is everywhere. reporter: in california alone there are 33,000 public chargers and more coming. >> it is not an issue anymore.

reporter: the greening of transportation picking up speed. it is the focus of this month's edition of national geographic that declares the revolution is here. >> the revolution is absolutely here. electric vehicles are growing by leaps and bounds. we saw on most 50% growth in the last 18 months of the number of vehicles being bought in north america. the number of monocle's are growing by up to 40% in the last couple of years. reporter: national geographic found that by 2040, ev's will be 70% of all vehicles. and an ev automaker just brought the first electric pickup to the market. they said a customer drove off with a truck earlier this month. when ford unveiled its ev version of the f150 announcing a 2022 debut, 100,000 customers reserved them.

dion: an event to celebrate breast cancer survivors and support the cause was held in person again today. the fundraiser has a new name and is held at a new venue. the more than pink walk was previously named the race for the cure. it drew an enthusiastic crowd to the san francisco zoo. >> this is a kickoff to breast cancer awareness month, to please take care of your breast health, get a mammogram, get screened, and yes. we are back and we can be together and to celebrate each other. dion: and take a look.

kate larsen was there with her daughter. she is a longtime supporter of the fundraiser and has previously emceed the event. some news tonight about one of our most popular shows. dancing with the stars announced this evening she has tested positive for a breakthrough case of covid-19. burke was scheduled to return tomorrow with her celebrity partner cody. no word on what will happen to cody. she says she has been ordered to quarantine for 10 days and that she was fully vaccinated with moderna. an important discussion took place this weekend to adjust anti-asian hate and economic issues facing chinatowns. it featured prominent asian americans like the to the white house. among many more.

yeah, i mean the thing is, people like geico because it's just easy. bundling for example. you've got car insurance here. and home insurance here. why not... schuuuuzp.. put them together. save even more. some things are just better together, aren't they? like tea and crumpets. but you wouldn't bundle just anything. like, say... a porcupine in a balloon factory. no. that'd be a mess. i mean for starters, porcupines are famously no good in a team setting. geico. save even more when bundle home and car insurance.
