for federal approval in just the next few days. kristen: the booster shot is available in the bay for those eligible. dan: on the subject of boosters, president biden received a covid-19 booster shot today. he got a third dose of pfizer after getting the first two doses in february. he qualifies because of his age. first lady jill biden can't -- jill biden got her third shot this afternoon. kristen: the countdown is on until california gives the green light to local counties to start reopening vaccination booster sites. stephanie sierra is live in the newsroom, tracking the timeline. stephanie: any day now, the state is expected to announce they have adopted cdc guidance and release recommendations on how counties should start

implement in the rollout locally. we are expecting clinics, mass vaccination sites, and pop-up sites will be up and running as soon as this week. the clock is ticking for california to make the final call on covid booster shots, a decision expected any moment as counties begin rolling out shots starting this week. >> you cff -- rutherford says he expects people will have to show their vaccination card. >> we're are only talking about people and got pfizer vaccines. >> some people who received moderna and the johnson & johnson vaccine were able to get an additional dose but rules will be stricter at county-run sites. >> this is just for pfizer. stephanie: the same is true at the san mateo county event center.

they are reopening the mass vaccination site next thursday, starting with 1000 pfizer dose appointments per day. >> we are expecting when we are running at full capacity to be able to do about 3000 vaccines per day. >> patricia irwin is the operations chief. she explains the drive-thru site will be run similar to the initial rollout with 20 lanes open, 10 on each side of the event center. >> how can people make an appointment? >> deplatform people will register on. stephanie: the state's website is up and running, giving two options to find a walk-in clinic or make an appointment for a third dose. >> we will look at the data for moderna and j&j in short order. stephanie: we have confirmed health officials in marin county will begin administering boosters at the northgate

shopping center. in solano county, the board of supervisors will be voting tomorrow whether to reopen the fairgrounds as a mass vaccination site in mid-october. live in the newsroom, stephanie sierra. dan: the nba has denied warrior players andrew wiggins a religious exemption for the vaccination and we are finally hearing from the man himself. today's warriors media day, where wiggins responded. but, did not have a lot of answers. >> andrew did not speak a lot today and this is the first time we have had warriors media day in person since 2019. now, one of the major storylines if not the biggest storyline today, the vaccination status of forward andrew wiggins. video earlier today at media day. there he is, walking up. last week, the nba denied wiggins exemption for religious

have a value for how he sees life. >> everyone is in a difficult position in that respect. we have all made decisions that you feel like our right for you, your family. this is no different, whether you agree with him or not. we have to let it play out. >> both head and bob myers spoke but did not say a whole lot. if wiggins does not get vaccinated and this rule stays the way in san francisco for the whole season, he would miss half the season. he is a key player from a basketball standpoint. as you heard the guys, everyone very respectful. a lot of teammates have his back one way or the other. dan: as teammates often do. wiggins is not alone in seeking a religious exemption. more than half of san francisco's on vaccinated police

officers are seeking a religious exemption. how does that exemption work and will cities like san francisco honor it? >> as we near closer to the date bay area cities are requiring city employees to be vaccinated against covid-19, some employees are submitting exemptions. all san francisco city employees are required to be vacci against covid-19 by november 1 unless they are required to be vaccinated on a faster timeline. the department of human resources tells abc news that it has provided an exemption pathway for employees who have religious beliefs or qualifying medical reasons. employees must demonstrate a qualifying medical or religious basis, and the department must be able to provide the employee a reasonable accommodation. the department of human resources writes, "because of the health and safety impacts covid-19 has, the city does not

expect all employees with a basis for exemption can be approved because the possible accommodations would place their coworkers and public safety at risk." it goes further, saying they must demonstrate the idea -- the belief is sincere and religious, rather than secular and scientific. if the accommodation would be costly, infringe on other employees job rights or benefits, compromise work place safety, decrease workplace safety, or require other employees to do their share of potentially hazardous or burdensome work. the employee mandatory vaccination policy which will apply to all city employees including police officers and firefighters is still in draft form. the city is finalizing the language based on input discussions with employee unions. once finalized, employees will have an opportunity to claim a

medical or religious exemption. can request an exemption based on a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance. kristen: let's talk more now about religious exemptions, boosters, and mandates with the state's top health mark ghaly. thank you so much for talking with us today. our reporter was just talking about religious exemptions. i believe the state as an employer and policymaker does allow the personal belief exemption for the covid vaccine. will you consider removing it the way i think new york state has he? dr. ghaly: for now, the religious exemption is available and it stands. there is lots of conversation about so many different things. but, at the moment, state employees have the ability to

file a religious exemption and have it honored by the state. those who do get that religious exemption do continue to need to be tested at the regular rate their department or agency at the state requires. so it does allow the exemption out of the vaccine but not out of the testing requirement that could fall on those individuals. kristen: might you also be considering removing the test option to get out of getting the vaccination? dr. ghaly: right now, we are not having that conversation. at the state. we know a lot of employers have and we support what other employers are doing. dr. ghaly: let's talk about the --kristen: let's talk about the pfizer booster. what is the state's plan? is it fully aligning with the booster criteria as for who qualifies and who should get it? dr. ghaly: short answer, yes. our plan is to be ready as we have been with so many parts of

the vaccination rollout over the last many months. we believe we are ready to meet the needs for those who should and even those who may get the vaccine booster. kristen: it looks like we have a good supply and infrastructure in place. i want to get your thoughts on the most contentious part of the cdc's decision. even internally, there was a lot of back and forth, people in higher exposure operations, people from 18-64. do you think those groups should get it? dr. ghaly: i think, first off, not everyone in that group is the same. some got it many months ago. even eight or 10 months ago. others are in the workplace. i think this is going to be a decision among many individuals. that said, if somebody is concerned about their exposure

and underlying health conditions, they may and they should express that right to go get the extra protection and vaccine. kristen: new york state could fire health care workers who do not comply with the vaccine mandate. california's deadline for health care workers to get their second shot i think is coming up in three days. would you consider doing the same, fire people who do not comply? dr. ghaly: we are serious about this mandate, we believe that in our health care environment especially that it is important to create that sense of safety for individuals coming there to advance and protect their health. we are doing all that we can to work with individuals who have yet to be vaccinated but that deadline is a deadline. we will continue to watch it closely and be serious about it. kristen: what about schools? many people say, leaving any school vaccine requirements that

may be coming to the local school boards really leads to the horrible battles it breaks our hearts to see across the state. do you expect the state will mandate vaccines the way you have for polio, mmr, other vaccines. requirements to do what we talked about to keep school safe for students and staff. their neighbors who are experiencing different health conditions and have that same important excess to education. there are a lot of important things within covid that -- at the moment, allowing those local decisions to come up and be considered locally based on decisions that affect those counties and districts, but

written by a young girl in 1941. she was 11 years old at the time and living with a foster family on noriega street, after fleeing austria. she wrote not long after the great depression and wrote about how seeing the lions and tigers brought her joy. the girl moved to nebraska. fast forward 80 years, her daughter found the letter while sorting through things during the quarantine. she said a copy to the zoo and it is part of her historical records. kristen: kristen: just days before the end of the pandemic, a relief program. how you can get help if you need

announcer: building a better bay area. moving forward. finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. dan: california's sweeping eviction moratorium law is set to expire on thursday. the deadline sparking a lot of fear that hundreds of thousands who struggled to pay rent during the pandemic will certainly be kicked out of their homes. reporter laura anthony spoke with officials from the governor's office today who say there is still help available. laura: with the clock clock clok down and california's eviction moratorium, officials want renters and landlords to be well aware of available options. >> we want to be sure that all renters who are having a difficult time paying their rent or who are continuing to rent, know that the rent relief program is still very much

accepting applications. laura: the assistance can cover up to 18 months for those who meet certain low income requirements. generally no more than 80% of an area's median household >> was a completed application has been submitted, it takes a couple of weeks to fully process and approve and then takes about 1-2 weeks after for thymt to go out even if someone does not qualify for assistance, there is a lengthy process that would have to occur before a landlord can evict a tenant. >> what is required on october 1, if the landlord wants to evict, because the tenant has not paid rent, the landlord has to apply for state funding, and then has to wait a period of time to see if the tenant qualifies. only then can the landlord

laura: the end of the moratorium looming, city officials say they have added staff positions to deal with the expected surge in assistance applications. >> we have received close to 300,000 applications in this relief program. but we know they need is still out there. laura: anyone wanting more information about california's covid-19 rent assistance can go to hous laura anthony, abc 7 kristen: in contra costa county, agencies are booked, trying to help people apply for rent relief. we have a look at why they fear many could face eviction in a couple of days. >> we know people are not going to get the money in time, and they can get reporter: kevin hernandez and her staff at monument impact are spending the entire day helping fill out applications for the emergency rental assistance program. she says ointments are booked

until the end of october, which means they cannot help some people who need immediate assistance. she says many of those people are now seeing eviction notices. >> we had landlords who have come to "monument impact" and say if i don't get my money as soon as this moratorium and, i will evict them. reporter: the county board voted to end the moratorium at the end of this month. they claim there are plenty of funds available to applicants so they can avoid getting evicted, but she says the application is not easy to fill out. >> it doesn't take 20 minutes, some applications can take 45 minutes depending on the documentation available, depending on whether the person has an email. a lot of people, especially of a low income and immigrant communities, don't have access to email. reporter: "monument impact" was one of the organizations that sent a letter to the board, asking them to keep the moratorium in place. the letter cited reasons such as a potential rise in covid cases

or a potential rise in homelessness. >> it is in nobody's interest to see thousands of evictions. the consequence of that ultimately being that there will be some number of those individuals who will be newly added to the unsheltered, homeless population. reporter: what these organizations want renters to know is they can still get help. although "monument impact" says they are booked till mid october, they can direct you to find the appropriate relief. dan: the community is rallying to save a landmark restaurant. it has been a staple in this neighborhood since the 1960's and is known as a safe haven for the lgbtq community. is on pine street. there are plans to build an eight-story 21-unit condo building there. construction would include repairs to the facade and the restaurant would reopen soon

after. the project has stalled because of an environmental appeal. now, lgbtq leaders are calling for the city to push that development through. >> more delays could tank the project permanently. after six years of the owners of the restaurant complying with all laws and regulations to rebuild this iconic institution. dan: organizers of the grab stake preservation project are asking anyone in the community who is concerned to send a letter to the supervisor, whose district includes the polk gulch neighborhood. kristen: a real-life horror at a haunted house. dan: and warriors coach steve kerr talks about how the

stan: time now for the the 4 at 4:00. ted lasso, have you watched the show? it is a streaming sensation. even more for the shout out warriors coach steve kerr got on the show. we asked him today if it was a highlight for him? >> it was a highlight. [laughter] there was a bit of nepotism involved there, my son may have had something to do with that. he is on the writing team for the second season of "ted lasso." his name was actually mentioned as well.

in the same episode. so it was actually kind of fun to get a whole bunch of texts that day from a lot of people to watch. but it has been a fun watch, and we are very proud of our son. kristen: such an amazing show. and that is pretty cool. dan, you watched the dan: is a great show, so much heart, which i love. spencer, you agree. spencer: i am not caught up, but i have watched a few episodes and i absolutely love it. i can't wait to go back and binge watch it. drew: i had no idea his son was a writer on the show. fascinating. you guys know roy kent started out writing for the show for the first season. then he thought he could play the character so well, he audition for it and they give it to him. kristen: wow.

drew: i don't think it was his first acting gig, he had some shows in the u.k. but he thought he could do it so well, he said, i will try out. dan: he is amazing. he could not be better. all right, speaking of actors, we know who will join william shatner on the next blue origin flight. dr. chris boshuizen will be part of the crew taking off on november 12. he is pictured in these photos showing the crew. he is a former nasa employee. and is headquartered in san francisco. the other two crew members will be announced in the coming days. i don't know when we will send sulu and uhura up. [laughter] i don't know. kristen: is a good bargain. drew: but it is almost too good to be true. dan: $100 doesn't pay for nightly parking at a hotel in new york. drew: right. kristen: be suspicious. dan: here is another strange story, a haunted house visit turns into a real-life horror story of sorts. >> one of the workers is walking around with a real knife. dan: that's the mother of an 11-year-old boy who was stabbed at a haunted house in ohio. apparently the kid didn't believe the knife was real, and where the actor was trying to prove it was real, accidentally stabbed the boy underfoot. so stupid. thankfully he finished the trip

through the haunted house. not surprisingly, the actor was hired. this raises all sorts of questions -- the actor was fired. why would they have a real knife anyway? drew: right. i do think about this when i go to haunted houses -- i love them, by the way -- but you never know, you are, like,, is that real. kristen: i was always scared of haunted houses. so if i were that kid, i would be traumatized for life. dan: we are not getting you into space or to a haunted house. kristen: nope.
