we have that major announcement from pfizer, which could pave the way for kids 5 to 11 to get the vaccine by thanksgiving. this morning, the big news from pfizer saying its vaccine is safe and effective in children 5 to 11 and has submitted supporting data to the fda for review. one federal official telling abc news those shots could begin rolling out before thanksgiving. a few weeks later than they hped. pediatric health car anxious for the additional protection for kids. >> this year it seems like they're so much sicker and can't breathe. i'm worried and anxious for them. >> some good news. since the beginning of the month, hospitalizations for covid have dropped by more than 20%. the forecasting hub predicting hospitalizations will continue to fall into october. >> right now it looks like we're turning the corner a bit. >> reporter: but the death toll still devastating. more than 27,000 deaths in a roughly two-week span. across the country new vaccination lines for pfizer boosters. more than 400,000

johnson & johnson, by mid-october. mona. >> alex, thank you. more high stakes meetings are planned in washington as lawmakers race to avoid a government shutdown tomorrow night. sources say top splat democrats and republicans are working to fast track a bill to keep the government from running out of money and president biden is scrambling to keep his domestic agenda from collapsing. he canceled travel plans today to continue negotiations for his $3.5 trillion social safety net package. meanwhile, the treasury secretary says the government will be unable to pay its bills unless congress raises the debt ceiling by mid-october. democrats are now working on a stand-alone bill to address the issue. the other big story this morning is the fallout from the top military generals testifying on capitol hill. they contradicted what president biden has said about the withdrawal from afghanistan. this morning, america's top military leaders are contradicting president biden's statements on the withdrawal from afghanistan. >> good morning. >> reporter: on tuesday, the three most senior officials of the defense department testified

they did not support pulling all u.s. troops out of the country telling lawmakers they advised both biden and former president trump to keep at least 2,500 troops in afghanistan. >> my view is that 2,500 was an appropriate number to remain and that if we went below that number, in fact, we probably would witness a chanollapse of afghan government. >> reporter: but last month president biden told abc's george stephanopoulos that no one advised him to keep 2,500 troops in the country. >> no, no one said that to me that i can recall. >> reporter: the white house responding by claiming the president's military advisers were split on the decision. >> secretary austin specifically said, if you stayed there at a force posture of 2,500, certainly you'd be in a fight with the taliban and you'd have to reinforce, so what should everybody take from that? there was a range of viewpoints. >> reporter: the hearing also turning contentious. they pressed mark milley on why he did not resign after the chaotic evacuation in kabul which left 13 u.s. service members dead. >> it would be an incredible

act of political defiance for a commissioned officer to resign because my advice is not taken. outcomes in a war, an outcome in a war like this, the enemy is in charge in kabul. there's no way else to describe that. that outcome is a cumulative effect of 20 years, not 20 days. >> reporter: milley also facing tough questions after a book revealed he spoke to a top general in china in the final months of trump's presidency to reassure the chinese that the u.s. would not launch a surprise attack after intelligence indicated china was worried. >> i know, i am certain that president trump did not intend to attack the chinese. and it is my directed responsibility and it was my directed responsibility by the secretary to convey that intent to the chinese. >> general milley also warned that al qaeda could rebuild its network inside afghanistan in the next 12 months.

nearly 40 miners trapped underground for two days in ontario, canada, are now safe. a piece of equipment fell into the mine's elevator shaft blocking their exit but they managed to climb about 4,000 feet to the surface using ladders. some climbed for up to eight hours to get out. >> a parking blake apparently played a role in this deadly accident in connecticut. the twin engine jet went down in farmington, killing four people. they say the parking brake was still engaged so it wasn't going fast enough to climb into the air. we turn now to the gabby petito case. the 22-year-old found dead in wyoming after a road trip with her boyfriend. he remains missing and now we're learning what he did just after returning home. gabby petito's parents speaking to the media tuesday for the first time since her body was found in wyoming. >> she's with us. she's with us. >> she's with us. >> reporter: they unveiled matching tattoos designed and inspired by gabby

reading, let it be, and vowed to help families of other missing. >> we're asking you to turn yourself in to the fbi or the nearest law enforcement agency. >> reporter: the fbi now leading the search for laundrie. his parents' attorney releasing a statement saying they don't know where brian is and that speculation they helped him hide is just wrong. this as new details emerge about lundrie's activity in the days after petito's death. ♪ the bounty hunter." >> reporter: reality tv star duane chapman better known as dog the hunter has joined the search. he says he got a tip that laundrie and his parents camped out in florida twice in early september just days after laundrie returned home without petito. >> they were registered, went through the gate. they're on camera. allegedly what we're hearing

back, now, with a rescue in california. that's san jose police officer pedro garcia, pulling a man from a burning car. he got him out just before the entire car went up in flames. the man's shoes had melted to the car. garcia says he was in the right place at the right time. and his training kicked in. internal documents from facebook showed the company targeting children, between kids between 10 and 12, as valuable untapped audience. "the wall street journal" reports that facebook formed a team to find ways to monetize children and play dates. the company delayed plans to launch an instagram kids app, about the concern that instagram is having on teens' mental health. a new book by former president trump's press secretary is shedding light on key moments behind the scenes at the white house. the details include why trump went to the hospital in 2019. and what he once said to vladimir putin.
