>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> right now as we come on the air, a red flag warning going into effect for parts of the northbay. i'm dan ashley. let's get to sandia patel with a look at the weather conditions. >> winds are beginning to pick up over the higher terrain. want to show you live picture. the camera has been shaking as winds are increasing. 33 miles an hour. mount, 23. it is a drying offshore wind. red flag warning until 11:00 a.m. the greatest concern is napa county, right near the sonoma county border.

that is where it is the strongest winds are expected, and lowest relative humidity. take a look at theg winds raisie danger. critical fire weather conditions. hourly forecast, winds increasing to about 30 miles an hour. 3:00 a.m., 20 to 25 miles an hour. that continues into 11:00 a.m. i will be back with the rest of the forecast, which includes how long the fire danger will remain. firefighters and residents are prepared for tonight's warning. while it may be worse, for many, fire danger is really never far from their minds. >> northbay residents are bracing themselves front of the overnight. firefighters in sonoma county stopped wind driven brushfire before it burned a barn. >> for myself and my partner, it

has been a big source of anxiety for us. >> in marin county. >> i grew up and the fire danger was not what we thought about. with the impacts of climate change, even in the last two or three years, it feels different. >> the fire department assesses property for fire safety, and a detailed list of suggestions. remove bamboo and juniper tree, replace wood fencing and natural fiber doormat with a metal or rubber mat. >> it is important everyone does their part to avoid further damage. >> to prepare, fire departments are up staffing anything they can, given it has been an incredibly demanding fire season. >> he brought resources back, came back from the fire yesterday rehabbing equipment today. get ready for the next fire weather. >> strong wind gusts are

600 students are being kept home for the rest of the week. >> you are looking at a picture showing flea bites on the back of an elementary school student provided by a parent. a child that goes to school on this campus that houses esperance a and cora monsoon discovery elementary schools. both dealing with flea infestations. >> we start seeing kids, and there are little tiny fleas all over the kids, they are jumping around. what is this. they are taking him off of each other and biting. scratching. >> catherine wilson teaches fifth grade. the flea problems started two weeks ago. students and teachers bit by the pests. >> by the time we got home, all of her face, insect bites, the fleas. it was like what happened. >> it borders this park and

wooded area. those with the district would leave wildlife brought -- believe wildlife brought it to the school. >> the exterminators, raccoons coming from those areas. maybe bringing those fleas. >> the district has chosen to close on thursday and friday to clean the school. they will rip out any carpets that may have acted as breeding grounds. good news to wilson, who is frustrated teachers had to threaten not to show up to get help. >> the treatments haven't had the desired effect, at least not as quickly as we would like. we decided to step up our game. >> wilson hopes it doesn't happen again. >> they were covered in fleas from their shoulders down to their ankles. more fleas than i had ever seen. i had never seen any like that.

it was apocalyptic. >> j.r. stone, abc 7 news. >> sounds terrible. in marin county, people lined up at the first booster vaccination site for the county. across the country, pleading with people who still have not gotten their first shots. morgan norwood has more from the cdc as some companies get very serious. >> as the u.s. looks to turn a corner ahead of a fall wave of infections, the cdc with the nationwide health alert urging pregnant women and nursing mothers to get vaccinated. >> we have the data that demonstrates the overwhelming benefit of vaccine and really very little safety concerns at all. >> new data shows 22 pregnant women died of covid last month. compared to other patients, twice as likely to need intensive care. 70% more likely to die. samantha kelly was 32 weeks pregnant, but unvaccinated when

she went into a coma with covid. she is recovering after doctors safely delivered her babies. >> a lot of decisions being thrown at you. as a mom, you try and make the best one. but unfortunately, i think i made the wrong one. and i should have gotten that vaccine. >> the warning comes as the number of people getting their first shot has fallen to the lowest level since the vaccine was introduced last december. 172,000 doses per day. tonight, hundreds of workers across the country out of a job or suspended for not getting a mandatory vaccine shot. >> if it comes down to that where i have to give up my job or get the shot and go against my inner conscience and my inner morals, it is just a job. >> for parents awaiting a vaccine for younger children by halloween, dr. fauci telling msnbc there could be a longer wait. >> we were hoping it would be by halloween.

if it spills over into november, it spills over because that is the necessary amount of time the fda needs. >> morgan norwood, abc news los angeles. dan: masks are coming off in santa cruz county. officials lifted the indoor mandate. cdc data shows the county has a moderate rate of covid-19 spread. now that 70% of people are vaccinated read health professionals say they don't see a problem with ending the mask policy. >> is it doing a lot of good for vaccinated people who have a good antibody response and are healthy to mask indoors if they are asymptomatic? it is probably not doing much. >> doctors will closely monitor the transmission rate in santa cruz county following today's decision. other counties may follow suit dependent on the results. >> it looks like we are on the trans road from 882 wrong way. dan: keep an eye on the gray

car. a wildcard chase. on the air and on the roads on the tail of a robbery suspect. it started atcus.a man wearing o starbucks with a gun and filled a bag with money from the register. he got into a waiting bmw and got onto i-80. that started a chase, with the driver eventually getting onto 580 and going the wrong way on the freeway. two other people were in the car, along with a driver. sky seven shows the car driving in circles, hitting at least two other cars. the driver got off at macarthur boulevard. drove into emeryville using city streets. all three people started running. nearly abandoned vehicle. police believed the driver surrendered after he was standing on someone's porch. police also arrested another woman. abc news was there when they searched the abandoned car and

found bags of cash. under the east bay chase started just as that one was ending. just before 2:00, police started chasing the car on highway 24 through the tunnel. the car was used in three laptop and cell phone robberies last night. the driver stopped on the freeway, just past the tunnel. he and his passengers came out with their hands in the air. it shut down the freeway for a little while and made traffic a real mess, as you can see. president biden helping get a funding deal across home plate. his surprise appearance at a congressional baseball game. >> the promise of perks, pay, and flex ability. holiday hiring during the ongoing pandemic in the south bay. dan: an emotional journey from being un-housed to finding new beginnings in the bay.

>> democrats and republicans agreed on a stopgap bill to keep the government funded through early december. the word from senate majority leader chuck schumer. a vote on the bill and president biden's infrastructure measure is scheduled for tomorrow. the same day government funding is set to expire at midnight. schumer says the bill would likely be signed into law before that deadline. hours earlier, president biden gave new meaning to the term closer with an appearance at the congressional baseball game, putting pressure on congress to pass a stopgap funding bill. >> the date was set a long time ago. no one imagined it would collide with this big milestone. i think the game does need to go on. it is a really important

bipartisan tradition. one of the few things we do want on bipartisan basis anymore. >> that is jared huffman defending holding the game, despite a possible shutdown approaching. they pause play and signed baseballs. he talked with players and republicans. nancy pelosi also stopped by the game. and republicans won a victory for britney spears. a judge suspended the conservatorship of her father. the arrangement with her father "reflects a toxic environment," said the judge. she did not dissolve the entire conservatorship, but another hearing is set for september. it has controlled her life and money for 13 years. in the south bay, researchers

year. october, some of the worst fires have hit the bay area. nice they are looking out for each other. wildfire cameras, amazing cameras. high fire danger. dusty down sloping winds. low humidity by tomorrow. drive fuels at record levels with an extreme to exceptional drought, which is raising our fire danger. east bay hills camera looking across the bay. visibility amazing. it has been gusting. mount st. helena, 43 miles per hour. pine flat road in the north bay. 22 mile-per-hour wind gusts. look what happens to the humidity. it really starts to drop. into tomorrow morning, 17%. 16% napa. single digits by the afternoon. 9% in napa. that is concerning. the fire danger will be highest

in the north bay. mainly around napa county, sonoma county border. the concern is any fires that develop will quickly spread. the storm track around this time of year well to the north in the pacific northwest. climate prediction center has predicted a la niña to continue. 70% to 80% chance. the accuweather forecast is for dryer and warmer conditions for the bay area, southern california. winter rain percent. 50% to 70%. not looking promising for the bay area. less in southern california. we have chances of rain next week. october 7, possibility of wet weather into october 8 and ninth. let's hope it holds. a lovely view tonight. gusting in the hills. elevated fire danger in the north bay. warmer weather through the weekend. temperatures in the 40's to the 60's tomorrow morning.
