the mandate has comte has of thousands of health care workers to get their shot but for some, that is not an option. kate larsen is part of our vaccine team. she is live with more on today's big deadline. kate: there is very high compliance with the vaccine mandate among bay area health care providers but there are still some health-care workers who feel they can't get the vaccine and may not have a paycheck until they do. >> this is between a rock and a hard place. >> her employer placed on an unpaid leave of absence. >> i sacrificed time with my family. i sacrificed my own health during the pandemic. i just want to have the opportunity to continue to do that. >> today is the deadline for the

covid vaccine deadline for health-care workers but megan has a medical exemption note signed by a doctor which she says is just while she -fds herfo psi cdc recommends td vaccine. >> are you planning to get the vaccine once you are done breast-feeding? >> yes. >> they can continue working while testing for covid twice weekly. while they can't discuss personnel matters, the health care system, neighboring hospitals and many other organizations are protecting patients and each other by requiring all employees be vaccinated against covid-19. this decision is deeply rooted in science, law and a desire to uphold responsibility to the community we serve. >> isaac it is reasonable for the hospital to go beyond the health order to protect the safety of their patients and

other health professionals. >> janet is a professor with this -- she is not overly worried about the impact of the vaccine mandate on bay area health systems. >> think the strain is much less then in those parts of the countries where we are seeing larger percentages of health care workers resisting vaccine mandates. >> i checked in with all the major health care providers in the bay area and you can see vaccination and compliance rates for kaiser the 90th percentile. very high compliance for all the providers in the bay area. >> at this point, what happens to the health care workers who are not in compliance with this mandate? >> it is an important question. employees who are not fully vaccinated or who don't have an approved accommodation will be placed on unpaid administrative

leave starting tomorrow. employees remain out of compliance. kaiser says by december 1, they don't plan on creating any separations or terminations just yet. >> uniteeir jobs for not complying with the company vaccine mandate. on tuesday, united said 600 workers would lose their jobs but more employees have provided proof of vaccination. that means 99.5% of the u.s. employees have chosen to get vaccinated. >> a new covid testing site in the north bay is getting some double takes to ensure it is an automated walk-up kiosk in the middle of nevada. it is already highlighting the need for increased testing. >> at first it is hard to tell what it is. a purple metal something on nevada possibility 7th street.

day. they have since doubled that, highlighting the need for covid testing. courts while our vaccination rates are higher than most counties, they are still very much in need for covid-19 testing. we still need to identify where the active infections are occurring in our community. >> the kiosk is a partnership here. or pop-up sites are planned for other parts of the bay area. >> people are being safe and getting tested. >> step right up. >> a work stoppage at northern california kaiser has created issues with garbage pickup at some hospitals. anonymous images shared with abc 7 show the waste situation at the open hospital three days ago. kaiser confirms with waste pickup earlier this week that when union waste management employees did not cross the pickup line. -- picket line.

they are on strike for wage increases. a statement from kaiser's president says we are offering a reasonable wage increase and no takeaways but the union is demanding much more. >> in what they are calling the largest pot bust in bay area history, more than 37 tons of plants, tens of millions of dollars of product have been seized in multiple grades that have spanned across the city. laura anthony went inside one of these illegal grow rooms, a warehouse in san leandro. >> so many marijuana plants, thousands of them in so many rooms of a warehouse here. this is just one of 18 similar warehouses in four cities, including oakland, hayward and castro valley fostered by alameda county sheriff's in recent days. >> we also seized upwards of close to $10 million in cash

out drugs, suicide, lightning or cyanide exposure. detectives say they are working closely with the fbi and other specialists. >> a group of protesters are shutting down traffic on the golden gate bridge. it was a real mess, demanding federal legislators create a pathway to citizenship for people who are illegally living in the country. it all started when immigrant rights activists blocks northbound traffic for about 45 minutes. the chp end up arresting five of the protesters. during the protest, immigration activists called on democrats to include immigration reform for the infra structure package. >> this is the only way we are going to be heard. you done everything. we have followed the rules, no one is listening to us. >> the same group that led the protests on the bridge continued to rally when they accused the government of benefiting from the exploitation of undocumented workers. >> it is like and who were

communities. this week we are launching the equity report, a data-driven tool that measures equity in five critical categories, housing, health, education, policing and the environment. the tool found disturbing differences in the quality of air we breathe and the impacts on our health. julian glover is on the story. air quality and the amount of pollution we are breathing in can really differ. that is surprising block by block. >> it is so fascinating. it is a reality that is not always captured when we pull out our smartphones. the equity report found that black and latino communities have worse health outcomes from breathing and some of that bad air. how bad is it? you can't change what you can't measure so san francisco -- a company in san francisco set out to change that. to better understand the differences in the quality of air we breathe, this company was

contracted to map the differences in air-quality block by block. >> they can have different air quality that differs by a factor of eight. there are multiple air pollution sensors that are housed in the back of the vehicle together hyper local -- hyper local readings. >> this is generated by tens of thousands of trips, showing the concentration of air pollutants like black carbon spewed from heavy-duty trucks crisscrossing west oakland streets. that deep purple is closer to the port. >> that means that diesel emissions that are major contributors to the pollution of places like west oakland are sequestered closer to the 880 corridor. >> the hope is that these block by block air-quality maps will

lead to solutions. it is a process required by law. it requires the california air resources board to work with regional regulators like the aie the west oakland environmental indicators and miss margaret to implement fixes. the ideas coming directly from the people. >> the game changer is that you have data from from from fro from the air. you get the challenge land use, proximity, if your business gets the upgrade. you redirect this truck traffic here. those kinds of things we never had before. >> that is one of the key targets of this airplane. -- plan. paving the way for a 2030 where each block would be equally clean air.

oakland to become leaner and greener. >> how does the port get to zero emissions? what might be the biggest challenges to accomplishing that? >> this is just a portion of a full 10 minute special report you can stream on the abc 7 bay area connected tv app. you will hear from the port of oakland about what they are doing to cut down on some of those diesel emissions, clean up the air in west oakland and you will hear from oakland activists and some leaders who say it is time to rethink or revisit that truck band that has been in place for 70 years. >> you mentioned that being lifted as a possible solution. how common are truck bands like this on major interstates? >> i spoke with -- i spoke with a spokeswoman of the federal highway administration that said commercial trucks are being banned from interstates.

authorized to operate here. they still need final approval from the california public utilities commission before offering rise to the general public. in the south bay, a high school student is helping save the lives of premature babies in rural india. this is a 17-year-old senior. when she was younger she came up with the impact incubator as an eighth grade science fair project. she went on to create a nonprofit that manufactures the low-cost reasonable incubators. so far she has disturbed it 125 of them to people in rural india. >> when i got i got i him he was like your incubators saved a life. i was in shock. that is crazy. >> she hopes to expand her reach throughout india and into other countries like bangladesh by the end of the year.
