[together] retirement. one life, right? mahalo. big wave golden ale. from kona brewing. kaiser engineers took to the streets of oakland. what they want. ama: connecting capable candidates to tech jobs. how one business is putting focus on equitable hiring. sandhya: warmer weather for the weekend. the temperature spread coming up. abc news at 11:00 starts right now. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, sign -- finding solutions. this is abc news. dan: tonight, hundreds of kaiser engineers rallied in oakland demanding better wages. good evening and thanks for joining us. they've been on strike for nearly two weeks, saying they won't go back without an agreement on a fair contract. j.r. stone has more on what they're looking for.

reporter: a driver burning rubber outside kaiser permanente's regional oakland office in support of hundreds of strike, taking to the streets thursday. >> if you want to have a decent lifestyle, you have to make a few bucks. reporter: his thoughts echoes out of the more than 700 union workers on strike for nearly two weeks. >> they gave us a 2% raise. we made a decent rage. the way the economy is right now, 13% increase in prices, it doesn't equal out. reporter: the situation has gotten so bad, trash wasn't picked up at oakland medical center three days ago and this is what it looked like. these pictures were shared by an anonymous employee who said union waste management employees did not cross the picket line. kaiser says picketers blocked the way for trucks. the trash has since been cleared.

union representatives said kaiser came with a take it or leave it contract earlier this month and they voted against it and authorized the strike. >> they want to give a bonus and not an increase. over time, that will result in lower wages. reporter: kaiser save these engineers are among the highest paid in their profession in the country. averaging more than $180,000 if you include wages, benefits, and retirement. those i spoke with were quick to respond to that. >> in the bay area, it is one of the highest costs of living in the country. >> we keep the lights on and machines running. air circulating through the building. >> something happens right now, there are no engineers in there. if you had a family member, wouldn't you be worried? er: kaiser refused any on camera interviews and gave a statement saying they are offering a reasonable age -- wage increase but the union is

demanding more. union reps say 24 kaiser locations in northern current -- california are currently affected. abc 7 news. dan: minutes ago, the custer county unified school district voted in favor of resolutions requiring employees, volunteers, board members, vendors, and contractors to be vaccinated against covid-19. they are still discussing a student mandate. the votes followed just over an hour of public comment. >> i'm vaccinated myself but i'm not going to force that on my daughter. i was forced to because of work but i'm not going to force it on my kid. if you do that, we will pull them out. >> the board has a duty to keep students and families safe. this is the clearest way to achieve the goal. the cdc recommends everyone 12 years of older should get this vaccine. dan: some wanted distance-learning options to be offered. others wanted the board to postpone the vote. of the 89% of staff who have

reported so far, 93% are vaccinated. in the county, 83% of 12-15-year-olds and 89% of 16-19-year-olds are vaccinated. vaccine mandates are also kicking in for many workplaces. today was the deadline for california health care workers to show proof they've received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. workers in other states are also facing fast approaching deadlines but not without controversy. morgan norwood has that story. reporter: from coast-to-coast, a crackdown on workers who refuse the vaccine. in california, to new york where teachers and staff are hours away from the deadline to get their first shot. >> i believe we should have a choice in what we decide to put in our body. reporter: in new york, 100% of health-care workers in the states largest health care system are fully vaccinated.

a federal appeals court blocked the firing of new york health care workers who claimed a religious exemption, pending the outcome of a court hearing next month. >> it was hard to do. it's hard to force people to do something that you truly wish they would do voluntarily. reporter: with vaccine mandates facing resistance, health officials are worried about vaccination fatigue ahead of flu season. doctors urging americans to get their flu shots. >> we've had 1.5 seasons now in the u.s. with no flu activity. we are relying on just vaccination to boost that population. reporter: it comes as the u.s. turns the corner on the summer wave of infection, cases down for the first time in three months. the data on kids and covid still unsettling. ohio seeing the countries second-highest number of child hospitalizations. >> hard to keep our heads above water. reporter: abc news, los angeles. dan: more bay area counties are putting out guidance about their

plans for distributing boosters. san mateo county has announced for dates that they will have booster clinics for eligible recipients at the county event center. those dates are october 7, eighth, 12th, 13th. san francisco will have 100 booster clinic sites available, a majority of which are already up and running. many counties are still relying on pharmacies in order to distribute these booster shots. if you are interested in making a vaccine appointment or have questions about the vaccine, head to our website. click on the big blue box. our vaccine team will be able to help you. a new study shows that more than half of killings by police have gone unreported in government data. research published at the medical journal compare data from an intergovernmental system with three open source databases. they found 55% of deaths from police violence between 1980 and 2018 were misclassified or

unreported. the study also said black americans were estimated to be 3.5 times more likely to die by police violence than white americans. this comes as governor newsom science several new police reform bills into law today including requiring officers to intervene and report excessive force. and increasing transparency of misconduct records. another bill creates a system to investigate and decertify an officer if they engage in serious misconduct. >> what this does is really pull the cover off of this notion of bad apples policing and say, not only will we not have bad apples , we don't want to bad orchard or a bad tree either. dan: the legislation creates a peace officer standards accountability division and an advisory board to review serious misconduct cases. in a statement to the chronicle, the peace officers research association of california said it supports establishing a fair

licensing program that affords peace officers the due process rights all american citizens are entitled to. it believes the definition of misconduct is subjective and thinks the advisory board will be biased. california's pandemic eviction moratorium officially ends after today which means landlords can begin the process of effecting tenants who haven't paid rent. some cities and counties are keeping the protections in place at least for the next few months. right now, 725,000 californians are still $2.5 billion behind in rent. if you need help, we are here for you. contact our team by going to our website. they are there to help. let's go to the south bay were a san jose bar that has been the source of dozens of complaints from residents and neighbors will permanently close next month. agape sports bar has been the

subject of an ongoing investigation by san jose and the city attorney's office since last december. it is closing as part of a settlement agreement with the bar's owners. police visited the bar for reports of fights, drugs, prostitution, and drunk driving. earlier this year, a molinero was killed when an inebriated driver killed through offense -- plowed through a fence while engaging in sexual activity in the parking lot. officials are relieved that the bar will be put to better use. >> there's having a nuisance business and then there's having a business that basically is breaking the law all the time. dan: the bar will officially close in just a couple weeks, october 17. the alameda county cell -- airsoft assess their deputies have made the biggest pot bust in bay area history. 37 tons of plants and millions of dollars in product were seized from 18 warehouses in oakland, hayward, castro valley,

silicon valley say they are seeing a shift in the traditional hiring process. resumes, gpas, and universities now carry little weight if you can't do the job. >> skills that you have accumulated and not what companies you work for. reporter: the cofounder and ceo of a mountain view based company bridging tech talent and recruiters through a service that reviews a candidate skills in real time. >> i will preview this once more to see if that did anything. reporter: a saving grace for this student after his first year he found difficulty in getting his foot in the door. >> i had no idea what you needed to do to get into these companies and i had a lot of failure. i didn't get into any internship after my first year. that was a really big problem for me. reporter: he landed a software engineering internship at walmart labs. the hands-on approach is one that this professor says puts
