ng water main has ooinhe east bay. this is new video. in -- amy hollyfield is live. amy: it looks like river rapids out here. look at this flow. we will be watching the water flow like this for at least another hour. that's when they are estimating they could possibly get the water shut off. you are looking at hemme avenue down from danville boulevard. this is that the creative learning center so keep in mind, they are not letting cars go through because of the standing water. they got the call at 12:45 this morning so it has been flowing for several hours and they still cannot get it shut off. it is flooding the street, but some residents do not have any water, 182 customers.

they don't know the cause of the break but they expect old age. >> water is still flowing, yes. the cause of the break is not known. the main is an eight inch pipe that was installed in 1950 so it is over 70 years old. of system is quite old and in need of repair and replacement. amy: they are having trouble shutting off the water because they can't get to the gate valve which is underwater. they can't get to it so that's why they just have an estimated time as to whether they will get this shut off and they are saying maybe around 7:00. this is the second water main break in 24 hours and they still have crews working at stoneman avenue and cole court. it knocked out power for about 200 customers and they have that down to about four.

something to keep in mind if you will be in this area later this morning. live in alamo, amy hollyfield. reggie: what could be a game changing treatment for covid-19, there is new data about a pill that treats the virus. merck is seeking emergency use authorization. jobina: mark and ridge back -- merck and ridge back have developed a pill that could be the first oral antiviral medication to get fda emergency use authorization to treat covid-19. the study is in its third phase. merck says if people with mild to moderate symptoms start the pill within five days of a positive covid test, they can reduce their risk of hospitalization or death by 50%. people would be able to get a prescription to take it at home, and this morning on gma, they explained the science.

>> by taking the pill, it inserts into the rna of the virus and stops it working. that is the magic of how this works. jobina: learn more about this drug coming up at 7:00 on gma. the studies have been so successful, merck has received permission to stop them early. they are planning to seek emergency authorization. kumasi: a vaccine mandate has been approved for west contra costa unified school district. the board voted to require students, employees, vendors, and contractors to be vaccinated. this followed just an hour of public comment with parents both in favor and against this policy. >> i am vaccinated myself but i'm not going to force that of my daughter. i was forced to because of work but we are not going to do that to my kid. >> the board has a duty to keep

reggie: a volcanic eruption in hawaii, the kilauea volcano is

spewing ash on the big island. the eruption is fairly contained to just the crater. the usgs says lava fountains have reached the height of a five-story building. this is the same volcano that erected for five months in 2018. i do want to point out, you can see a rainbow to the top. a rainbow, a volcano in one image, pretty amazing. mike: that is spectacular. amazing. here's a look at temperatures elsewhere, 60 in alameda, one of the warm spots. fairfield and novato, 49 and half moon bay, 45. 52 in lafayette and danville. here's how it looks for most of us during the morning hours. our commute ready much cloud and fog free except right by the coast where the clouds are gathering, including the golden gate bridge. it will be calm and smooth on

the san francisco arts commission and media organization catch light are putting on this exhibition that is free and open to anyone from october 4 to ape -- april 15. kumasi: new research shows exercising too close to your bedtime can keep you up later. researchers in canada reviewed 15 studies and looked at the relationship between exercise and sleep quality. a heavy workout within two hours of your normal bedtime can disrupt how much rapid eye movement sleep you get a night, the deepest stage of sleep. reggie: some people have been dreaming about this, the return of the mcrib. the sandwich will b omcdold men. a crib is a barbecue sauce covered boneless pork patty served with onions and pickles

will not feel like it. here is a look from mount tam, fog. let's talk about what's going on right now, clouds trying to gather, little bit of fog along the coast. they are having a hard time, not motivated to move east into our neighborhood. watch for a few of those to spell through. we will be in the low 70's to low 80's by noon, and mid 70's to near 90 inland by the afternoon, and back in the 60's and 70's for the most part by 7:00. reggie: a water main break has caused a huge mess in the east bay at hemme avenue and danville boulevard. amy hollyfield has been there all morning long. what's the situation? amy: it is quite a sight to see. at looks like a water park attraction in the middle of the seat -- of the street, looking at river rapids on hemme avenue.

we are on danville boulevard looking down hemme right by the creative learning center. the road is blocked and they are not letting cars through so residents will have to figure out a way to work around this situation. they are hoping to get the water turned off in the next hour, but we've not heard whether that's definitely going to happen. that is an estimate, but it has been flowing like this for several hours. got the call at 12:45 this morning. hemme avenue at danville boulevard is where this is happening, and old pipe broke that is about 70 years old. water is flooding the street, but some residents do not have any water, about 182 customers. all of this flooding looks terrible and water is still flowing. as they said, this is as bad as it's going to get. >> water has been throttled down

significantly, so at this point, it won't get any worse. we've got contra costa county trying to get folks out. amy: they are having trouble shutting off the water because the valve is flooded. that's why they don't have an estimated time of when they will have this cleared up, but they were guessing at 5:00 a.m. that it would be a couple of hours, but we are still seeing a steady flow of water. hard to watch, hard to look at while we are in the middle of a drought. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. reggie: a highly anticipated high school matchup in the bay area has been canceled. the coach called off the game with pittsburgh hi becauseplaynr covid-19.

pittsburgh has now had two games canceled. san francisco public health officials launching booster vaccine clinics even though the state has not set formal guidance. 100 sites will be accessible across the city and county, the majority of which are already running. the city launched about a dozen high traffic sites. >> we coordinated with the department of health and worked with community partners to make sure every pharmacy has access to the vaccine. reggie: the county has updated its vaccine website, updating these 100 locations. you can filter for distance or place is open to the public, have confirmed availability, and are wheelchair effective -- accessible. kumasi: public school teachers and staff in new york city must show proof they've gotten at least one dose of the covid-19
