patients in recent weeks. and breaking this morning, the major drugmaker merck releasing promising data on a treatment for covid saying it could cut the chances of death or being admitted to the hospital in half. whit johnson joins us with more. good morning, whit. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. if authorized this new antiviral medication would require a prescription. patients would then take a course of pills over a five-day period. studies show it works by stopping the covid virus from replicating in a sick patient and was effective at preventing people from going to the hospital or from dying. this morning, a potential new weapon in the fight against covid. pharmaceutical company merck releasing new data about their anti-viral drug which reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by up to 50% in clinical trials. >> this is the first oral anti-viral that will be

available to combat covid-19, and why that's so important, if you think of it, if you're someone who is unfortunate enough to get the news that you've contracted covid-19, this is the pill, you can take it home and it will significantly reduce the risk that you either ultimately are hospitalized or more importantly that you would ever face the unfortunate outcome of death. >> reporter: the company says the results of their phase 3 trial were so promising they ended it early in consultation with the fda. they looked at 775 non-hospitalized adult patients with mild to moderate covid and at least one risk factor for severe illness. through 29 days, no deaths were reported in patients who received the drug, compared to 8 deaths in patients who got a placebo. the drug also effective against the delta, gamma and mu variants. >> it's an oral antiviral. you take it. it's a five-day course of therapy and by taking the pill it actually inserts into the army of the virus and stops it

from working and that really is the magic of how this works and really allows you to significantly reduce the risk of hospitalization or death. >> reporter: the drug consists of a series of pills taking within five days of positive positive for covid. merck is expected to apply for fda emergency use authorization as soon as possible. this as the battle over vaccine mandates heats up. in new york city, teachers and staff up against a deadline tonight to get their first shots or risk losing their jobs. >> i will continue to advocate against these mandates, but obviously i'm going to need to figure out how i'm going to pay my bills and support my son. >> reporter: the state's largest hospital system saying nearly 100% of its employees are now fully vaccinated, but late thursday, a federal appeals court blocked the firing of new york health care workers who claimed a religious exemption, pending the outcome of a hearing next month.

and breaking this morning, brett kavanaugh has tested positive. he's kurcurrently showing no symptoms. >> reporter: now, back to that new antiviral medication considered to be significantly less expensive and less cumbersome than things like monoclonal antibodies. merck says it's planning to have 10 million courses of the drug ready to go by the end of the year. george? >> thank you very much. we go to the latest in the white house from washington, the house delayed a vote on a bipartisan infrastructure bill as progressives revolt because key senators refuse to play ball in president biden's larger investment bill includes funding for child care and climate initiatives. lawmakers are working around the clock to find a compromise and congressional correspondent rachel scott is tracking it all from capitol hill. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. after a marathon round of late night intense negotiations, democrats still struggled to

reach a deal, forcing nancy pelosi to push that off for a second time. >> reporter: overnight, house speaker nancy pelosi forced to scrap a high-stakes vote on the president's bipartisan infrastructure plan after hours of frenzied late night negotiations on capitol hill failed to unite the party, pelosi leaving her office at midnight still insisting progress is being made. the white house releasing a statement saying we are closer to an agreement than ever but publicly the party still appears to be deeply divided. this morning, those moderate holdouts senators joe manchin and kyrsten sinema standing firm. >> their lack of homework is creating instability to the process. what we are seeing from the conservative side at the small cadre of people is a fundamentally unserious pattern of negotiation. >> reporter: progressives in the house say they will vote against the trillion dollar bipartisan

infrastructure plan unless the congress can pass the president's second, much larger spending package with funding for a range of initiatives like paid family leave, subsidized child care and fighting climate change. the price tag, $3.5 trillion, but manchin wants less than half of that and to move forward they need the vote of every democrat in the senate. >> mine has been 1.5 because i believe in my heart that we can do. what we can afford to do without basically changing our whole society to an entitlement mentality. >> reporter: progressives say that's too low, refusing to downsize. senator manchin said $1.5 trillion is his top line number. could you see yourself coming down? >> look, we are in the same place we've always been, we put out an offer for $3.5 trillion, in fact, 96% of democrats in the house and the senate support that number. >> reporter: so the white house says negotiations will pick up right where they left off this morning. pelosi did not rule out trying

to hold a vote today but still has a lot of work to do to unite her party. >> she sure does, rachel, thanks. and top white house aides are huddled in the negotiations. the president working the phones, press secretary jen psaki conceded that the leive saagmaking isn't prty. >> that's how democracy should work. we're in the midst of it right now and we're not trying to paint over how messy it looks. we know that, but the good news is there's agreement that we need to do more to rebuild our roads and railways and bridges and address the climate crisis. >> biggest challenge yet for president biden, and let's go to terry moran at the white house. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning. this morning, the white house putting a brave face on what is a tough day for the biden agenda and biden presidency. aides insisting that this is just one step in what is always the long, difficult process of passing major legislation, democracy is messy they keep telling us. last night, in the final scramble to get something,

anything passed on the hill, it seemed more than messy here. no one really seemed to have a real grasp of what was going on, plans changed back and forth on whether the president would make a public statement. he hasn't spoken publicly since from giddily hopes to exhaustion and resignation. no papering over how tough it is. biden is the leader of his party. he failed to unite the party to get it done, but they're putting their shoulders to the wheel this morning. as you heard from rachel there, in a statement last night after it was all over press secretary jen psaki saying progress has been made but, quote, we will need some additional time to finish the work starting first thing this morning. george. >> okay, terry moran, thanks very much. amy. turning now to facebook and instagram, they are under fire. the company's global head of safety grilled in a senate hearing, one senator comparing the popular social media app to cigarettes saying it's meant to hook kids early.

rebecca jarvis has the latest on all of that. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning to you, amy, and this was an explosive hearing. many lawmakers made comparisons between facebook and big tobacco and pressed the owner of instagram to share everything it knows about the app's impact on teens and how it engages with its young users. in the three-hour hearing facebook grilled about its attempts to target young people. >> instagram is that first childhood cigarette meant to get teens hooked early. >> reporter: accusing the company which also owns instagram of disregarding internal research which showed that its instagram app can be harmful for many teenage girls. >> while facebook publicly denies that instagram is deeply harmful for teens, privately facebook, researchers and experts have been ringing the alarm for years. >> reporter: an investigation by

"the wall street journal" revealed that facebook's own research found that more than 30% of teen girls said when they feel bad about their bodies, instagram made them feel worse and that teens blame instagram for increases in the rate of anxiety and depression. >> you've lost the trust and we do not trust you with influencing our children. >> reporter: the global head of safety for facebook insisted the company has an overall positive impact on teens' mental health. >> we work constantly on privacy protections for young people. >> reporter: but many senators accused the social network of cherry-picking its data calling the internal research a bombshell. many senators also urged facebook to abandon plans for instagram for kids service. >> thank you, rebecca. we turn to the chain of stores across the country breaking its one buck promise. dollar trees are now hiking prices and will reeve is here

with more. will, is a dollar in dollar store officially dying? >> reporter: michael, that's what seems to be the case. the premise has been simple since dollar stoes became popular after world war ii. this was your key to the kingdom. whatever you needed to buy at a dollar store would cost a dollar, but we've heard throughout the pandemic about rising costs of consumer goods associated with inflation and supply chain issues and labor and freight costs and how all those costs would be passed along to the consumer. well, those costs, this is what it looks like, being passed along to the consumer. dollar tree, which has tens of thousands of stores in north america, announcing it will be raising prices on most items by 25 or 50 cents or more. think about that as a percentage.

the dollar tree ceo telling "the wall street journal" this price hike is in part a response to those rising costs. on wall street positive reaction, investors have long been pressuring these dollar stores to raise their prices, dollar tree stopped price soaring in response to this news. on main street, a far less kind reaction. people lamenting the negative impact that these price hikes will have on its core consumer base. the store putting out a statement saying for decades our customers have enjoyed the thrill of the hunt for $1 and we remain committed to that core proposition but many are telling us they want a broader assortment when they come to shop. michael. >> i mean, 25%, 50% uptick in prices, must think money grows on trees, a dollar tree. hopefully you got my joke right there but will the consumer continue to see prices rise or raise in the store? >> yeah, michael, unfortunately, because of all those external factors that have been putting pressure not only on dollar stores but the economy writ large experts expect inflation to last through this time next year, the latter half of 2022 is

one month, two months but an 18-month party, a long party that will come up. we're doing that, but right new details in the manhunt for brian laundrie. the fbi is back at his house looking for more clues where he might be and victor oquendo is tracking the case from miami including new bodycamera images. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, george. that new body camera video from a second police officer who arrived on scene that day in august and in the video gabby petito claims that brian laundrie hit her first but then she backtracked. this is another glimpse into their troubled relationship. >> is there something on your cheek here? looks like -- did you get hit in the face? >> reporter: overnight, in new body camera footage from august 12th when police pulled over brian laundrie and gabby petito, we're seeing for the first time officers respond to claims that laundrie hit petito, noticing bruises on her body. >> to be honest i definitely hit him first. >> did he hit you, though?

it's okay if you are saying you hit him, and i understand if he hit you, but we want to know the truth if he actually hit you because, you know -- >> i guess. i guess, yeah. >> reporter: petito quickly backtracked and said brian grabbed her. >> he grabbed me like with his nail. >> reporter: officers later classifying the incident as a mental/emotional health break where they decided to separate the two for the night. neither pressing charges. laundrie would return to florida without gabby roughly two weeks later. it's now been 2 1/2 weeks since brian laundrie was last seen. fbi agents returning to the laundrie home for the second time in four days, agents spending time inside the home and checking the camper parked outside. the laundrie family attorney saying they were collecting personal items to assist the k-9s in their search. >> the idea that they want to continue with a scent dog to find brian is fairly encouraging. that means that perhaps they have a location that they're focusing on that we don't know about.

>> reporter: the fbi now leading the urgent search, but newly obtained records show north port police responded to the laundrie home dozens of times in the past couple of weeks for so-called calls of service. details of each call are unknown, but the north port poepartment says the records include traffic con any there, and two of the calls were made the day before gabby petito was reported missing and three calls on september 11th. gabby petito's cause of death is still unknown, a week after officials ruled it a homicide, with gabby's father joe posting on instagram saying, gabby followed her own path to travel and see the beauty of this world. you may be gone, but you will make this world a better place. back to that body cam video, the city of moab has announced an independent investigation into how the police department handled that stop. george? >> let's bring in commander with the u.s. marshals.

you have been in a lot of searches like this, lenny. how's it been going so far? >> well, george, yes, good morning. right now law enforcement is chasing a ghost. i mean brian laundrie, he's gone dark, he's off the grid. he's not communicating but i'm sure he's sleeping with one eye open. these fugitive investigators are turning his trusted circle of friends upside down. the digital footprint is important, mom, dad, family members, they're looking at everything and hopefully this goes down without incident. >> what's the significance of this warrant that's been issued for laundrie for bank fraud? >> well, that bank fraud warrant, the fbi was able to get is a home run for law enforcement for anyone in law enforcement. they could utilize that to say -- let's say he's held up in a dwelling or a house, they can make a forced entry now. they have a legal document. they can also use it as leverage going into any conversation with a family member or trusted circle of friends. aiding and abetting or harboring a fugitive is a federal offense. you're looking at a five-year mandatory minimum sentence so you don't want to mess around

with things like that, so they could use it to their advantage. the law enforcement. >> that takes us right to the parents, do you trust them? >> do i trust -- >> the parents? >> the parents are -- i'm scratching my head about the parents. i've hunted down fugitives for three decades. if i q&a'd a mom and dad, i would say, mom, if you knew where your son was would you tell me and nine times out of ten they would say no. that tells me two things, they know where he is, and i have to take a hard look at mom and dad and their cell records and so on and to forth. so it's, you know, it's anyone's guess if mom and dad are cooperating. >> what's your gut tell you about where he is and whether he will be found? >> oh, that's the million-dollar question, he could be anywhere. they say he is a survivalist, in the appalachians, is he in the

woods somewhere, is he sitting in mexico off the coast of cuba? his photo is nationwide. social media is fired up and the streets talk so like i said, i hope this goes down without incident and they put this to bed sooner than later. >> thanks very much. >> thank you, george. next to new allegations of sexual abuse rocking the ballet world. five women filing a lawsuit accusing a former ballerina and her husband who is an instructor of victimizing young dancers. erielle reshef has more for us this morning. good morning, erielle. >> good morning to you, michael. those sweeping sexual assault allegations detailed in a 53-page complaint. five dancers coming forward accusing the ballet power couple of working together to carry out a campaign ofarassment and abuse. the lawsuit claiming young dancers are uniquely susceptible to abuse and it's plagued by

a pattern of exploitation and silence. >> reporter: this morning, ballet bombshell. five dancers now coming forward in a federal lawsuit. ♪ accusing prominent ballet star dusty button seen here dancing on her youtube page of aiding her husband, a former dance instructor, in sexually abusing them. one of the women, a minor at the time. ♪ sage humphries and gina menichino filed an initial complaint against button, but after he moved to dismiss the case, three more dancers joined the lawsuit naming his wife dusty as a co-defendant. one-time principal ballerina for the boston ballet, it alleges dusty was complicit accusing the couple of garnering the loyalty and trust of young dancers, then exploiting those relationships to coerce sexual acts by means of force or fraud.

drug molnupiravir that reduces death or hospitalization up to 50% in clinical trials. >> this is the first antiviral to be developed, and if you're someone unfortunate enough to get the news you've contracted covid-19, this is the pill, you can take it home and it will significantly reduce the risk that you either ultimately are hospitalized or more importantly that you would ever face the unfortunate outcome of death. >> reporter: the company says the results of their phase 3 trial were so promising they ended it early in consultation with the fda. they looked at 775 non-hospitalized adult patients with mild to moderate covid and at least one factor for severe illness. through 29 days no deaths were reported in patients who received the drug compared to eight deaths in patients who got a placebo. the drug also effective against the delta, gamm a&m u variants.

contribute to more vaping. >> a new study released by the fda found nearly 2 million high school students and more than 300,000 middle school students are using e-cigarettes. according to that report vaping was actually down 40% last year, some experts suggest that could be due to quarantine and remote learning. but it could be short-lived as kids are back in school and vaping is often a social activity and revealing flavored e-cigarettes are among the most popular with kids while many flavors have already been banned by the fda, menthol e-cigarettes have not. in september of 2020, the fda gave e-cigarette companies one years to submit applications to continue marketing their products but the fda missed its own deadline for ruling on those applications, even from some of the biggest brands, and if you suspect that your child may be vaping, look out for unusual pen organization usb drives and for any unexplained sweet smells. it is distinct. >> yes, it certainly is, and that's certainly good advice for parents everywhere, thank you.

>> okay, so, immunotherapy helps chemo and your own immune system better identify and destroy cancer cells so the fda just approved keytruda, an immunotherapy drug for use in early stage triple negative stage, this is the most aggressive subtype we have to treat, young women, black women and a phase 3 trial and almost 1,200 stages 2 and 3 just reported that everybody got chemo, half got keytruda, everyone got surgery and the keytruda group got nine more cycles, and we're seeing a 37% drop in fatal stage 4 events in the keytruda group, that's huge. >> i got chills. you have exciting news for women over 50 with estrogen positive breast cancer. >> i do. so the standard for decades with that is everybody gets endocrine therapy for five or ten years and some are for how long now,

hot flashes -- >> i'm on year seven by the way. >> this is interesting although you're under 50. it's a test looks at the inherent biology to determine its recurrence potential. we've been using it since '07 as doctors to determine chemotherapy benefit but new data shows that same result can help doctors determine endocrine benefit. so mammaprint is, low risk, the lucky ultra low. that is so genetically lazy especially if you're miserable on meds you can probably stop short of five years and be fine, high risk you need chemotherapy and endocrine therapy for five years, but then stop. this group plods along, and if it recurs, it recurs 10 or 15 years from now so they need to think about that for ten years. >> and so if you can explain how

endocrine therapy actually works and also this isn't just about the meds. food can help as well. >> it can. so endocrine therapy, 80% of breast cancers have receptors so you can take tamoxifen, so it blocks the receptor. aromatase inhibitor, fat cells converts steroids in estrogen. don't replace pills with plants with plants but they but they work synergistically so do both. >> you've got some of those. i was looking. it's remarkable. you can actually prevent breast cancer? >> no, so no science has ever shown any specific food to prevent cancer. you should always check with your doctor before changing your diet but these ten foods have been show to work anti-estrogenically in your body. >> they reduce the risk of

breast cancer. >> and risk of recurrence. here are my top ten, soy, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and leafy greens, citrus fruits, flaxseeds, fiber, like berries and beans, whole grains, not white flour, red grapes, mushrooms. can you believe the cheapo white -- >>ic love mushrooms. >> aloe tonic degrades estrogen receptors. >> there is a tonic using the entire leave and seaweed. >> what are other ways? >> exercise. avoid alcohol. avoid meat and dairy. limit processed foods and simple sugars and refined cereals and lose excess weight. >> yes, because estrogen is in those fat cells.
