the governor and his announcement today will impact millions of california students. thanks for joining us. i'm kristin z. i'm larry beil. you're watching abc 7 news at six live here on abc 7 hulu live and wherever you stream with a new emergency order, california will require eligible students be vaccinated for covid-19, although places in the bay area already took this step. it's something that no other state has done. this will affect millions. of that's why we call the kate larsen. we want to end this pandemic. we are all exhausted by it and with that governor gavin newsom announced all california students public and private kindergarten through 12th grade be vaccinated against coronavirus. once the shot is fully approved by the fda for the younger age groups. we also want to see all of our staff paraprofessionals not just teachers bus drivers. sodial staff and the like also

see them get vaccinated new sim is directing, california. 's department that should be immunized against in order to attend school. there will be accommodations for medical and religious exemptions. it's a really good step. and it's not over yet like the fight to get everybody back to native recruit is now 13 and an eighth grade at del mar middle school in marin, but in 18 as a seven year old don't get sick at school. he testified at the state capitol in support of the bill that removed personal belief as an exemption for school vaccine requirements. he's a leukemia survivor and could not attend school at the time because 7% of his fellow students were not united against childhood diseases which could have killed him now. he's vaccinated against covid, but i am still slightly immunocompromised. i applaud governor newsom. i think it's the right thing to do his father carl crowell. it says the mandate will protect everyone what we always try to

tell people. is that a vaccine refusal is it is a decision that endangers others. i'm vaccinated. my kids are vaccinated please don't feel is a special education. sharon marin and his students as young as three in her class who are not yet authorized for a covid vaccine. she also was colleagues who need extra protection. i happen to know a couple of teachers that are battling cancer right now that are in chemotherapy. they need to be protected. it's about protecting our community and and it's the right thing to do, but not everyone's enthusiastic about the upcoming requirement. i just spoke to a dad here at unipro sarah elementary school and disappointed with newsom's announcement he is children who were five and eight years old and doesn't plan on getting either of them vaccinated anytime soon. so there will be some families who have to grapple with some tough decisions in the next year or so in san francisco. i'm kate larsen abc 7 news. now there are a lot of details

involved in determining when this requirement will actually take effect the main issue when full fda approval comes for 12 to 15 year olds right now. only pfizer's vaccine is fully approved and only for people 16 and up depending on the timing the state anticipates. the requirement would apply to grades 7 through 12 starting either in january. or as late as july of next year for kids 11 and under it'll be a longer wait, even though the timing is still being determined. x today with dr. alok patel another member of our vaccine team. he joined me on our 3 pm show getting answers and here's his take. this is all based on that fda approval. so this is based on you know, all the safety and efficacy data coming out and people looking at people in our public health officials. look at these vaccines saying like yeah, these are great for our kids and that's that is a really reassuring thing for parents anyone out there who's paying attention about this here? you can ask our vaccine team your questions about the

paid their rent some local cities including san francisco extended that moratorium. there's still time for renters to get help to stay in their homes abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow with the details. we have arrived at the moment that many have called the eviction cliff san francisco supervisor dean preston and tenant advocates gathered today to announce district 5 as an eviction free zone just because the landlord comes to you and says, i want you out. that doesn't mean you don't have rights with the statewide eviction morator. now expired state and local leaders are reminding renters of their rights under california law the san francisco apartment association tells abc 7 news new procedural rules require landlords to apply for rent relief before sending any notices to pay rent. the rules will apply through march of next year giving renters and landlords time for the rental assistance program to fully disperse funds before eviction is even on the table the california department of housing and community development says for rental protections to be extended to eligible households those household.

of the reason our air quality will be so poor tomorrow tomorrow. it looks well, i should say today. it looks hazy outside, but not too bad. this is the view from the east bay hills abc 7 news weather anchors spencer christian. can wear air quality will be the worst tomorrow spencer okay christian. well as you pointed out we can see a little bit of haze right now, but we'll probably see a lot more tomorrow. so let me give you a look at the spare the air alert along with our air quality forecast. so that alert is in effect for tomorrow. the worst air quality is expected to be in the inland east bay, which will also be the hottest region of the bay area as temperatures are going to be rising over the weekend. even on sunday moderate at best will be the air quality. in fact, it's entirely possible that spear of the air alert could be extended into sunday. but monday we expect a bit of a cooldown which will bring us a cleaner air better air quality across the entire region. so how hot will it be tomorrow? well, just looking quickly. some of the inland areas will be in the mid to upper 90s tomorrow as well as on sunday mid to upper 90s, but bit of an easing

residents and authorities were shocked to find the beloved playground at sue, bierman park burned late last night. this site is located near the ferry building. it's the only playground in the area serving over a thousand kids who live neighborhood and now the entire playground is closed both san francisco police as well as the fire department are investigating this incident severe crash on interstate 880 involving five cars two of them caught on fire sky 7 shows the aftermath of that accident. it happened near the whipple road exit in hayward just before noon two people were treated for none serious injuries. we are social justice issues as

part of our efforts to build a better bay area today. important test of a new california law meant to eliminate racial bias in criminal cases attorneys argue that using a pittsburgh man's rap lyrics in a murder conviction was racially biased abc 7 news race and cultural reporter. julian glover joins us now with this exclusive story julian. what are the attorneys hoping will come out of this. hi, good evening, kristen. they're hoping that their client the defendant in this case gary bryant jr. gets a new trial legal expert i spoke to today called us a case of rhyme and punishment and those attorneys are arguing that quoting bryant rap lyrics and citing them as fact was a violation of his amendment rights and they're hoping that new racial justice act changes that this testimony before the card inside judge clear mayor's contra costa county superior courtroom friday, which believed to be the first test of california's new racial justice act. we're not asking for someone to get away with murder.

for criminal justice reform it prohibits the state from seeking a criminal conviction or sentence on the basis of race, ethnicity or national origin it enables that say in a criminal case. a defendant to raise a claim that there is racial bias retired santa clara county superior court judge will endorse cordell called the use of rap lyrics in criminal proceedings against black men rime and punishment were the lyrics are on trial instead of the person is used almost exclusively against black defendants. so it's basically a stereotype if you're a rapper and you're saying this well that must mean you're doing all of this stuff and it's an interpretation of really what those lyrics mean. according to court document prosecutors used bryant's lyrics to secure gang enhancement charges by connecting him with the broad day gang and extend his sentence. his mother tells me he was never in a gang and wants to hug her son again the industry uses

bay on inland and that means it mainly sunny day tomorrow as well with temperatures on the rise for tonight. we'll call it mild overnight lows generally mid to upper 50s a little cooler on the coast where lowe's will drop into the low 50s in some now, let's take a look at tomorrow's projected highs 75 and half moon bay. so a nice mild day along the coast 83 in san francisco and around the bay shoreline. we expect highs to be in the mid to upper 80s tomorrow inlet areas, especially in the inland east bay mid-90s, perhaps a degree or too higher 91 down south and san jose 94 north at santa rosa is all around the bay area inland areas. will sizzle tomorrow air quality. well, tomorrow's the spare the air day the porsche air quality likely to be in the inland east bay, not much improvement on. day when we expect moderate air quality at best in most regions of the bay area, but see all the green showing up on monday indicating. we're expecting good. the in some parts of the bay area certainly an improvement across the entire region significantly ahead to next wednesday looking at the forecast. and starting noon on wednesday.

better bay area moving forward finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. report that michael finney aired last week has literally torn up the internet. and investigation into a scam that's taking in even the most careful of us 7 on your side's michael. finney is here with an update. oh, okay guys, like most scams. it is a new take on really an old scheme. so pay attention and you may say to yourself some money and grief. the imposter struck just as nurse page pollock was running to catch a fly at the airport. she got a text saying bank of america fraud alert. did you just attempt a zell transaction of 2,500 leaves reply yes or no. and so i thought oh my gosh, i

didn't authorize a $3,500 transfer. so i typed no immediately her phone rang. the caller id said bank of america and she was told the only way to stop the fraud was to make another zell transaction. so she did. boarding the plane. she grew more suspicious and open the b of a app on her phone and sure enough. i looked at my account and $3,500 was gone. that is a sinking feeling traced a bow shop felt too. she was conned and exactly the same way. we were pretty well convinced that there was no way we were getting that money back so we did nothing but started seeing your pieces. and the people describing exactly what? we went through it including having it be a zell transaction specifically. so i reached out to you teresa. she was caught at a bad moment, too, and the scam is complex.

it's very confusing and you're sort of kind of going. doesn't quite seem right and at the same time spoken mirrors, and they got me i've received quite a few complaints and it isn't just happening here in the bay area our chicago abc station wls found victims, too. it's really distressing machine brooks was taken for 3500 dollars. save your heart earn money. to just be taken away from you new victim old scam text phone calls and a fake phone number consumer actions going to sherry has seen it all before it's a false sense of urgency. it's always about you know act now act quickly. hurry up. oh my god, you know the sky is falling. this is what we have to you know guard against getting too excited in the moment. we have to step back and think is this really realistic. could this possibly be true after 7 on your got involved paige got a call from bank of america. like that means i get my money back. oh, yes, and then i just started

crying. i just am beyond grateful, and i thank you from the bottom of my heart teresa got her money back too. well, my advice is first of all way to beat because it's easy to react when someone tells you that there's fraud on your account, but taking just you know take a moment and remember that you've seen this story and you know, these things are happening bank of america has posted a warning about this on its website and for this report told us in part. it's important that viewers understand that the bank and other companies would not ask customers to transfer money between accounts in this manner or requests sensitive account information zell's network operator agrees saying this is likely an example of a fishing scam where the scammer spoof the bank phone number and attempted to convince the individual to provide their personal information. not a breach of the banks or zell security.

my best advice here is nev nev v respond to unsolicited emails texts or phone calls look up the contact information online and then you reach out yourself if you're concerned a couple of minutes a couple of hours in going to make any difference. one it's great that you were able to get their money back to this is a really elaborate scheme that these people are. off because they've got a few things stacked up on top of each other where you think oh, this must be legit see and they come in and attacks, which is how many financial institutions get a hold of you now then they give you a phone call. that's also how they do it once you've made some contact. and so everything they're saying even if it isn't quite right, it's close enough to what you've done before. i mean, these guys are good at what they do. yeah. well, so are you and that's why it's fantastic for the viewers that you can help. thank you michael here michael michael's original story about this has been one of the most popular on our website for days go to abc 7 news.com so you can read it there and share it with your friends so that nobody else falls types of scams.
