>> building a better bay area. moving forward and finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. kate: oakland is mourning another five tonight after another murder. an activist gunned down in his own home. good evening. a woman was also injured in that shooting on oakland's monticello avenue. our reporter spoke to neighbors who are mourning a friend and are concerned for their own safety. reporter: at 11:29 p.m. on friday, oakland police responded to the latest homicide in the city. two victims shot inside their home. today, oakland police did clarify the circumstances behind

the homicide. a next-door neighbor feeling helpless. >> i heard the shots. reporter: minutes later, police arrived and he heard the worst news. his neighbor and friend had been killed. >> he was a friend and i stayed up all night until i saw him leaving. reporter: he remembers hearing a total of two gunshots. the police scanner describes the injuries of the other victim. >> a second victim has been shot in the arm. reporter: the neighbor identified his neighbor as an activist. the second victim was his wife. the activist was pronounced dead at the scene. his wife is in stable condition. investigators were at the house today searching for answers. police have not released any information regarding the suspect. >> i thought of myself.

i am the same age as the person that wasi am sleeping at that t. should i get a gun? reporter: another resident is asking city officials to help saying in the last three months, i have noticed an increase in gunshots in the once quiet maxwell park neighborhood. >> we need leaders who not just listen but take action. reporter: are you thinking of a neighborhood watch? >> that is my hope. reporter: he bought a dog a few months ago. >> it is really scary. reporter: this is the 105th death in oakland this year. in oakland, abc 7 news. kate: here at abc 7, we dedicated teams of reporters to dig into oakland's rising number of homicides.

we do have good to moderate air quality currently but it will decline again heading into sunday. we have some elevated smoke in our atmosphere. it is a hazy end to moderate to poor air quality but it will improve by monday and tuesday especially. we will have cleaner air moving in. tomorrow, along with the air quality issues, it is a hot end to the weekend. kate: thank you. did you feel it? an earthquake shook parts of the bay area today after another one last night. i spoke to a scientist about what the earthquakes mean when they are so close together. two earthquakes in two days shook the bay area. saturday, a three .5 magnitude earthquake just before 12:30 p.m. in the afternoon. both were centered in nearly the

same spot. >> it is a rolling day. kate: she felt both earthquakes. >> born and raised in california. i always feel them. >> these should be treated as reminders that at some point in the future, we will experience a large fault earthquake. kate: the deputy director for the science center said the earthquakes were felt throughout the bay area. as far south as san jose. he lives in alvin ailey. >> i felt -- he lives in albany. >> i felt a little rumble. >> these are just small patches rupturing on a creeping fault. >> it is kind of scary because it makes you think of the big one. kate: he says at some point, there will be a large earthquake along a fault.

kate: authorities in florida made a sad announcement that the body believed to be a 19-year-old has been found. investigators discovered the remains in a wooded area of orange county, florida. she was last seen at her apartment complex in orlando. the day she went missing, a master key of a maintenance worker at the apartment building was used to enter her apartment. >> her bed is always made up and everything is in place. she has everything set up a certain way and when we got there, it was in a mess. kate: the person of interest in

the case died by suicide on monday. as the delta variant fueled a of cobit cases, the u.s. has passed another tragic milestone. doctors urging the unvaccinated to get the shot. we have more on the sobering statistics. reporter: the united states reaching its latest heartbreaking milestone on friday surpassing 700,000 lives lost to covid-19. throughout the summer, the rising death toll has been driven by the delta variant mainly of the unvaccinated. nearly 70 million americans have still not received the vaccine. >> vaccinations are still our best defense against the covid-19. reporter: a former college football player delayed getting the vaccine and nearly lost his life to the virus days before he

one third of parents with kids from 5-11 years old will get their kids vaccinated right away once they are available. kate: it vaccination effort today on the peninsula brought the shot to an area with a low vaccination rate. the clinic was held at broadmoor village. those that attended the event were offered the pfizer and moderna vaccines. the vaccination rate in the county is 94% but in the broadmoor village it is just 72%. >> our goal in san mateo county is a drive to 100%. i am confident we will get there but it is these pop-ups like this that will get us there. kate: on thursday, a mass vaccination site with booster shots will be opened at the san mateo event center. as always, you can ask -- you can ask our vaccine team about covid-19 vaccines.

new developments fix a ruptured water main in alamo. the water is back on for 179 customers. the break happened in the area of danville boulevard early yesterday morning. repair crews towed nearly eight hours to get the water turned off. the water created a sinkhole. folks around the bay area were stunned to see a giant light streaking across the sky last night and it turns out the streaking was likely caused i-8 meteor. -- by a meteor. there were several reports last night of a bright meteor in the area around this time. starting tonight, sightings like that could become more frequent. the orion meteorseorseorseorseoo every year this time. they are bright and fast and

>> building a better bay area. moving forward and finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. kate: capitol hill where the countdown is on to pass the infrastructure bill. nancy pelosi set an october 31 deadline. that is when the current highway legislation is set to expire. we have the latest details on where negotiations stand. reporter: president biden sounding confident that he can get both the infrastructure and the reconciliation bill across the finish line. >> i believe i can get this done. reporter: moderate house democrats were pushing for an immediate vote on the bipartisan infrastructure deal that has already passed the senate and would revamp the nation's roads and bridges but progressives wanted to hold off on a boat

until there is also an agreement around the sweeping reconciliation budget bill to create new social programs and fight climate change. >> are we going to deliver universal pre-k to this country or not? are we going to expand health care to our seniors are not? reporter: during a meeting on capitol hill, president biden told lawmakers about a possible compromise. scaling back the budget bill. the $2 trillion to cover budget proposals that include free community college, paid medical leave and more. >> two more votes. reporter: the head of the progress caucus seemingly encouraged that the president was willing to wait and push for both bills together. >> he was really clear that we are going to get both bills done. reporter: even if the

progressives and moderates agree , there are still a lot of details to figure out. we know there is still a lot of disagreement among democrats with the climate and renewable energy provisions in their budget bill. kate: families in the south bay are rallying to try to put a stop to school closures in their community. cooper tin unified a lot -- announced a series of cost-cutting recommendations including permanently closing two elementary schools. the vote will happen at the next board meeting on october 14 two weeks after announcing the closure proposal. if voted on, this would be the first time the district closed any schools in 40 years.ieayinga infestation are all in track to
