not yet vaccinated and now there's a battle brewing over it. >> a discussion in the work to drop indoor mask mandates throughout the bay area. what local health officials are conflicted about the possibility. facebook accused of putting profit over public safety. experts weigh in on ways the platform can improve. >> dramatic drop in temperatures today. in the labonte amount, coming up. abc 7 news at 11:00 starts right now. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. dan: a sign of our times may be changing. are you ready to give up your mask? some counties may be ready to list -- lift their mask mandates. counties are now rethinking restrictions concerning covid-19 and that includes the mask mandate. in much of the bay area, we' man two months when the mandate was reissued. kate larsen went to the experts to find out if now is the time to change that once again.

she's live with the story. reporter: i've been in touch with health departments throughout the area and dropping masks indoors is on the table. today, the mayor said the changes long overdue. i heard lots of hesitation from people i spoke to tonight. epidemiologists included. mask mandates have been a moving target throughout the pandemic. in mid june when california reopened, the state dropped indoor mask mandates. when delta created a surge in cases, seven counties reissued indoor masking mandates in early august. now bay area health officials are discussing ditching the face coverings once again. >> the mask feels like a safety blanket. reporter: despite declining covid cases and the highest vaccine rates in the country, bay area residents are not ready to drop their mask. >> it feels too soon. there are too many variants. i'm fully vaccinated but i feel my risk. >> we are past the metrics to by the cdc. reporter: this infectious

disease specialist says right now it makes sense to drop the mandate. >> we have low transmission now. we have high vaccination. that loses its definition of a mandate versus a recommendation. reporter: the you cfs colleague says he won't be dropping his mask anytime soon. >> do you think it is safe? >> i can think of safer things to do. i'm older. need to be careful. i don't want to get covid or be at risk for long-term covid. reporter: people need to manage their own risk. >> you will walk into an indoor place, especially one that is crowded where you will mix vaccinated and unvaccinated people, just be careful. reporter: personal perspective is a factor. these two both live in san cihild too young to be vaccinated. >> i'm interested in his safety. keeping the mask mandate indoors goes to that. reporter: this 24-year-old is already dropping his mask inside

restaurants and clubs. >> we are pretty comfortable at this point, being out in public and going out without the mask. reporter: today, they are considering where there may be some flexibility in lowering mask requirements in setting where there's lower risk, low contact rates, and where people are fully vaccinated. kate larsen, abc 7 news. dan: thanks a lot. oakland is now requiring all city employees to be fully vaccinated. city council tonight a that mandate. it takes effect immediately but gives workers until november 29 to get their shots. workers will be allowed to request a medical or religious exemption. if you rely on public transit in san francisco, a vaccine mandate debate could slow your commute. j.r. stone explains that more than 600 san francisco mta employees are unvaccinated, many of them muni drivers and soon they could be off the drop.

300 transit operators off the job at -- would mean double or triple the amount of waiting. that's what transit workers union of america president roger barranco says will happen if unvaccinated muni bus operators are fired for not getting the vaccine by november 1. like san francisco is requiring. >> it's a scary situation because it is like the city and county of san francisco chopping off their own leg when you don't need to. reporter: at tuesday's meeting, 640 municipal transportation agency employees aren't vaccinated. more than 300 of those are muni operators. that's 13 to 15% of the city's total bus drivers, less than 50 are currently asking for exceptions. operators want a choice of getting the vaccine or taking a daily covid test which is not currently an option. this muni operator told us he got his two shots.

ask writers how they feel and most have strong opinions. some against. >> i think about vaccination it should be about choice. then it's going to turn into a monarchy type. they will force everybody. >> if they don't want to take it, they shouldn't take it. don't think it's right to lay people off that have been working the entire pandemic. reporter: some for the vaccination mandate. >> regardless of it getting slower, i think they should get vaccinated. >> it's for our protection and their protection. a lot of people depend on muni. reporter: this mandate could lead to terminations for parking control officers who are also part of the sf mta. in san francisco, j.r. stone, abc 7 news. dan: vaccine mandates are also taking a toll on medical workers. today, more than 2000 kaiser employees were placed on unpaid leave for electing not to get the vaccine following a september 30 deadline. just a few days ago, when 5000

kaiser employees were unvaccinated. outrage in the east bay for people trying to get a booster shot only to be told there are none. they are angry and frustrated. today, at least to cvs pharmacy locations canceled appointments because they ran out of boosters. abc 7 news reached out to cvs which said the high demand may have exceeded the initial allocation received from the government. >> it's always frustrating for somebody to have an appointment for a vaccine and then find out it's not available. >> there are people pushed by their family or something to come in and have a negative thing and they go, it's not going to be. that's the sad part. dan: both alameda and contra costa counties have their own vaccine allocation from the state. the county sites are currently open for booster appointments. other covid headlines tonight. anger over employee vaccination mandates has led to a warning tonight from the department of

homeland security. it says domestic terrorists including white supremacists will likely threaten violence or plot against health care personnel and public officials. a top fda official says shots for kids ages five to 11 could get approval by the fda when it's committee meets on october 26. johnson & johnson has submitted data to the fda to authorize booster shots for its covid-19 vaccine. the company says a booster 56 days after the first shot provides 94% protection. remember, you can ask our vaccine team your questions about the covid-19 vaccines.

internal inspection at the end of the month. governor newsom has declared a state of emergency to free up money for cleanup. investsri ainst the pipeline company is likely. in the east bay, a break in at a facility that helps seniors in need cost $20,000 in equipment damage. it happened last night at the eldercare alliance warehouse on foothill boulevard. investigators say the damaged equipment included a pallet stacker. it used it to load groceries onto delivery trucks to be taken to more than 8000 low income seniors in oakland. this is a shame. pg&e is telling everyone about a new power line safety measure that is leading to preventative power outages. pg&e held a webinar this evening to explain the new system that is intended to help reduce the risk of wildfires. crews are currently adjusting the sensitivity of the power lines to automatically turn off power any time an issue is detected.
