better price point. kate larsen has more on the new push from the federal government to increase action -- access. kate: on monday, the fda authorized the test made in southern california. on wednesday, the white house announced a $1 billion investment to manufacture at home rapid tests. >> we are on track to quadruple the supply of rapid at home tests available to americans by december to more than 200 million a month. kate: at the beginning of august, the tests were in abundant supply of drugs goers -- drug stores. ever since school started, the tests have been in high demand. some stores are well-stocked while others have empty shelves. rose miller says her grandson in kindergarten has already taken two at home covid tis school year, whi tiry eferovts he feels more comfortable in the home. kate: they come in two packs and

cost $12 per test. the white house says the test will be less than $10 per test. sammy says he needs the at home tests because he is taking care of his elderly father. >> it was difficult to locate them and when i did, they are pretty expensive so i think the idea of having affordable at home testing kits is absolutely a good move. >> i would hope the supply chains for this test really open up. kate: the copresident helps run free covid testing using at home tests in san francisco's mission district. >> at $10 per, that's $50, food for a day. should these tests be even less expensive? >> yes, i hope the price comes down because there's competition in the marketplace and because the government should subsidize them to some level so that they can be accessed by more people, especially people who have a tough time making rent. kate: with holidays approaching, the at home covid tests have the

potential to bring people together safely. dr. peter is an infectious disease specialist. >> i had one of my colleagues swab everyone in the driveway before they came into the household for a very small get together even though everyone is vaccinated, just to add that layer of security, given the idea of break home infections. kate: at home antigen test's are not quite as sensitive as pcr tests. i'm kate larson, abc 7 news. ama: another manufacturer of rapid test kits, an australian company recalled almost 200 thousand tests that were shipped to the u.s. due to concerns about a higher-than-expected rate of false positives. they were sold at major retailers including cvs, target, and amazon. dan: a new government study concludes that a startling number of children have actually been orphaned by the pandemic. from april of last year to this past june, the cdc and national institutes of health estimate that more than 142,000 children

have been left without a parent or caregiver in the united states. california had the highest number with more than 16,000 orphans. the vast majority of those orphans, because of covid in california, are hispanic. ama: taking a look at the covid headlines, astrazeneca asked the fda to grant emergency authorization for a long-acting antibiotic treatment to prevent covid-19. the company said the treatment reduced the risk of symptomatic covid by 77%. los angeles will require proof of a covid-19 vaccination to enter indoor venues like concerts, restaurants, theaters, and james. it goes into effect november 4. president biden will travel to chicago to stress the need for vaccine mandates. dan: for the first time in 1.5 years, full capacity crowd was allowed to see the warriors play at chase center tonight. it was a preseason game. the impact of covid-19 vaccine mandates was clearly seen in the crowd and on the court. j.r. stone is in san francisco.

jr: this is something we have not seen in 575 days because of the pandemic and even then, we did not see these kinds of crowds and long lines in san francisco for warriors basketball. >> we want to be extra cautious. my friend here is into nursing. she is like -- we put two masks on. just trying to be safe. j.r.: proof of vaccination is required for those 12 and older. and proof of a negative covid test is required for kids 11 and under. which may be a reason why we did not see many young children at wednesday night's first preseason game. the words executives say safety is key here. >> from the very beginning, we said we wanted chase center to be the safest building in the country. j.r.: you might think to yourself, not a big deal. >> we are expecting a full crowd tonight. j.r.: businesses that just

the app is free, remember, in the app store. ama: this afternoon, a neighborhoodn napa waswhohesay g to a family dispute. when they arrived, officers say they saw a 26-year-old man with the weapon, acting in a threatening manner. the officer fired the gun and he is still being treated for his injuries. dan: the discovery of seven non-native oriental fruit flies have forced a fruit quarantine on a large portion of santa clara county. very small test with big implications. this means no fruit should leave the area. tracking issues affecting the environment, key to building a better bay area. amanda del castillo explains what is being advised by agricultural officials. amanda: the oriental fruit flies -- last month, they landed here

at the santa clara county fairgrounds. >> we found one and then two and then three. amanda: counter now up to seven according to joe devaney. he a breeding population which is why the california department of food and agricultural there to -- declared a quarantine. from the fairgrounds north to the neighborhood, residents i the quarantine zone are being asked to not share their backyard fruit to keep the flies from spreading. >> that would make farmers have a more difficult time growing the food. they probably have to do more pesticides, which no one wants to do. it would be more difficult for them to export things because other countries don't want this. amanda: it is a test of more than 200 -- pest of more than 230 fruits and vegetables. because we don't have a real wind chill -- winter, they could easily get established here. treatment is already underway, targeting the male fruit flies. workers scored a small patch of

attractant mixed with pesticides on trees and similar surfaces. the male fruit flies eat it and then die. the county's ag commissioner says it could be nine months until the quarantine is lifted. >> if we do not catch anymore flies, then that means we have halted that population, eliminated the males in the area. there's no breeding population. we are not finding anything. that means that the quarantine will be over. amanda: residents should not bring back fruit or vegetables when traveling, also asking that people do not accept packages of fruit scent from outside the state. in san jose, i am amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. ama: kernville residents had a chance to express their thoughts about the bending -- pending sale of johnson's beach for $3.7 million. it already has a lot of potential buyers including sonoma county. much of the conversation was focused on the possibility that the county might use it as a

no words on capitol hill yesterday, the lawyer of the facebook whistleblower told the washington post there's more to come. the statement comes as much of the information that he obtained during her time at the company has yet to be made public, particularly facebook's role in the january 6 insurrection. he is accusing the company of purposefully selling division to keep users engaged in systematically choosing profit over the safety of its users. mark zuckerberg blasted her claim, saying "at the heart of these accusations is this idea that we prioritize profit over safety and well-being. that is just not true." >> i think that she misrepresented the issues she testified about. she did not work on these issues at facebook. i think she has mischaracterized a lot of the documents that she stole. ama: her legal team says more workers in the tech industry have reached out and could become whistleblowers. dan: twitter is testing a new

way to warn users if they are about to enter a conversation that is "eat it or intends -- " heated or intense."" it is testing prompts for words used in certain threads at one of the sample prompts reads "heads up, conversations like this can be intense." another has a reminder of the twitter values. twitter says this is a work in progress to better support healthy conversation. ama: an answer for some viewers tonight after we received a number of calls from customers who were unable to reach the toll-free customer service lines of several companies. abc 7 reached out to wells fargo and capital one, two of the companies experiencing these issues. most fargo said it was an issue with the phone provider. capital one said it was technical difficulties with its call centers. since the response, the issue seems to have been resolved for most impacted companies. dan: fleet week is well underway in san francisco. this morning, the u.s. navy opened the doors to three shifts for public tours.
