electricity cut in a matter of hours as part of a public safety public shut off. good evening and thanks for joining us, i am j.r. stone. you're watching abc seven news :00. developing news tonight. this is the latest outage map. the area shaded in orange could have their power shut off in a matter of hours to reduce the risk of wildfire. the winds are expected to pick up through the night and into tomorrow morning. drew tuma is tracking the conditions and when things are expected to shift. drew: we are finding those winds will be first to ramp up in the hills late tonight and tomorrow. it is a windy day across the entire area. we see the thinnest layer of fog. it is a beautiful end to the weekend, but the tree in the foreground, it is waving. winds5

miles per hour, but in the hills we expect the winds to ramp up for the next six to 12 hours. above 1000 feet, winds to 15 miles per hour, and the winds will continue to strengthen into the early morning hours on monday. here is the red flag warning. it begins at 11:00 p.m. tonight and will last until 5:00 p.m. tuesday. we will go hour-by-hour, show you the wind speeds and the advisory for the bay area a few minutes. j.r.: thousands of pg&e customers in the north bay are being alerted, their power may be shut off after midnight. cornell barnard is in napa county, where many are feeling anxious. cornell: about 24 hundred pg&e customers here in napa county could have their power cut as soon tomorrow. it is something everyone aroundb god, i have so much to

say about pg&e. i am frustrated. cornell: rosa knows things can get scary soon, and halloween has nothing to do with it. rosa and thousands of other pg&e customers got this alert on their phones warning of a potential public safety safety power shut off, or psps, starting monday morning. >> we are a little frustrated because we live on a well. if we don't have power, we don't have water. so a couple days of that really puts us behind. and we have kids, so it is frustrating. cornell: the utility says high winds may prompt a power shut off to reduce the risk of wildfire from energized powerlines. >> our meteorological's continue to monitor the potential weather system that could bring it dry, gusty, offshore winds to the northern central regions of our company's service area. cornell: it is a concern in san helena. the mayor says the pandemic has

taught local officials how to prepare for a psps. >> the silver lining of covid is we have a more clear communication system and network around the entire county. we feel we are staying in touch and monitoring the situation. cornell: steve's hardware is down to its last portable generator, and batteries and flashlights are in short supply. >> last time the power went out, it wasn't even windy. cornell: rosa says they have been through it before, but are ready again if the power goes out. >> it is frustrating. we are over it. cornell: pg&e says of the power is cut it may not be restored until tuesday. the mayor says everyone should have a plan and be prepared. in napa county, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. j.r.: we have put together a list of things you can do to prepare for a plant power shut off. you can find it by going to our website, abc7news.com, along with live updates of the temperature and wind speeds through our real-time tracker.

as the 40th annual celebration of fleet week came to a close, thousands of visitors, including myself, were out and about, enjoying the festivities while they still could. it sure the last air show up today's event took place this afternoon. it concluded the weeklong celebration that included ship tour, live music, and exploring the city by the bay. >> it means a lot that the city is willing to let us come in and try to have fun, party a little bit, relax and make sure we can enjoy our time. j.r.: this year's event was the only in person fleet week event to take place in the country. those who missed out or are waiting for more of the experience, ship tours will be available until noon tomorrow. the long weekend got a bit

longer for southwest customers after the airline canceled more than 1000 flights nationwide today. for comparison, american has the second-most cancellations today with 66. it is the second day of mass cancellations by southwest. yesterday, the airline canceled 800 flights, blaming the weather. abc 7 news was at the oakland airport, where travelers were trying to make alternative plans. >> it is definitely an inconvenience. it would be nice if they answered the phone, or at least tried to get you another flight. >> everyone else was so upset about it, but we are into making the best of situations. j.r.: southwest says today's cancellations are due to the weather, air traffic control problems, and limited staffing in florida. crews will try a new tactic to t shore up san francisco's sinking and tilting millennium tower. repairs were paused in august after a report found the work was contributing to the sinking.

the luxury high-rise at mission and fremont street has sunk at least 17 inches, and is leaning 14 inches. "the chronicle" reports that crews will bore into the ground and install a three foot wide steel sleeve. that work is set to start on tuesday. two strong earthquakes rattled hawaii earlier today, but so far there are no reports of damage or injuries. the usgs says they measured at 6.1 and 6.2, and were centered south of the big island. however, there is no threat of a tsunami. people reported strong shaking and the quake was felt on kawhi kawai. you can hear items crashing to the floor. there are just a few weeks left until halloween. pandemic pulled thelug on most celebrations last year, but 2021 is promising to be different.

j.r.: abc 7 news is committing to building a better may area. at one of the major issues we are focusing on is climate change and the environment. on an effort to cut down on emissions, california is were working towards moving towards banning the sale of gas lawnmowers. the board is in the process of creating rules. the band is supposed to take effect no later than the beginning of 2024. there will be rebates offered to get people to dump their old equipment. $30 million will be set aside to pay for it. facebook is unveiling new controls for kids. this follows damming testimony, claiming the company's platforms harm children. teens will be prompted to take a break when they are using its photo sharing app, instagram. they will also be nudged to move on if they keep looking at the same content that is not

conducive to their well-being. facebook plans to release adult controls so parents can supervise what their teens are doing online. now to the latest on the coronavirus pandemic. hospital admissions have dropped nationally by an average of nearly 40% in the last month. more americans get vaccinated. but some are defying vaccine mandates even at the risk of losing their job. rena roy has the story. reena: get vaccinated or get fired. that is the decision many american workers are facing. new york city considering more vaccine requirements for municipal employees, which could include the nypd and fdny. on the others of the country, the los angeles county sheriff says he will not enforce the vaccine mandate at his agency. >> i don't want to be in a position to lose 5%, 10% of my workforce overnight while at the same time our bare-bones

j.r.: it has been three weeks since the volcano on lipoma erupted, and it is spewing out endless streams of lava. lava has engulfed an industrial park, adding to the destruction of more than 1100 buildings. some 600 residents have been evacuated. officials do not expect the eruption to end anytime soon. the lava is flowing into the atlantic ocean where it has created 84 acres of new land. william shatner will have to wait one day longer than expected before launching into space. due to an unfavorable wind in the area, the blue origin mission that was scheduled to launch on tuesday has now been pushed to wednesday.

the launch will take place on the west texas site in the town of vanhorn. the new shepard vehicle will carry shatner, as well as three others, into suborbital space. now for meteorologist drew tuma. i don't know if we need the space forecast, but maybe just the day forecast. drew: no thank you. i do not want to go to space. it was a beautiful end to the weekend, but tomorrow is a windy start to the new week as red flag warning's will begin in just a few hours. a live look as the sun is setting. the sunsets are getting earlier as we head toward the winter solstice. we made it into the 70's and 80's. i hope you got to enjoy this nice finish to the weekend. we have cooled off to 63 in the city. 76 and a, 71 in san jose. san mateo coming in at 66 degrees. the doppler and satellite, quiet

across california. high-pressure in control, giving us that gorgeous weekend today and yesterday. but changes are coming quickly. low pressure to the north will dive into nevada. first thing tomorrow morning, it is going to kick up our winds pretty rapidly. overnight, despite having a little fog on the immediate coastline as drier air moves in over the next couple hours, it will berode away at the fog. it is a clear night, temperatures falling into the 40's and 50's as the red flag warning begins. it does include the northbay mountains, the inland east bay, the santa cruz mountains, interior mendocino county. for the winds picking up out of the north, turning gusty and dragging in the dry air, dropping humidity levels and increasing our fire danger. we are back on air at 11:00 tonight. we expect the winds to be

strongest along the coastline and on our hills. first thing tomorrow morning, we find the winds moving in from the central valley to the delta. then we spread across the entire bay area. by tomorrow afternoon, it is a windy day no matter where you live. winds gusting 30 to 40 miles per hour, possibly higher than that. a wind advisory begins at 9:00 a.m. for the entire bay area for the strong winds. it is a good idea if you could secure any outdoor furniture, take down umbrellas, secure holiday items because the winds will be very strong, especially tomorrow afternoon. highs tomorrow cooler than today, pretty much on either side. about 70 degrees with the red flag warning. it is windy tomorrow. the winds will relax tuesday evening. by wednesday, the red flag warning is gone. but thursday and friday, the warmer weather moves in. saturday and sunday, we are back into the 80's in our hottest spots. announcer: now, abc seven sports
