leslie says she's been charging her phone in her car her only source of entertainment right now what i can do it. i have to you know use my phone and go on my phone and youtube and in and out on my phone pg&e says that light rain on sunday caused transformers to blow all over the bay area knocking power out for thousands. they say the dirt on the lines from the dry conditions turn to mud which conducts energy and starts the fires on the lines. i would just wonder why pg&e don't have a way to clean the line. you know, they do they have a pool washing program. they just haven't washed the poles in leslie's neighborhood. and now more rain is on the way pg&e says if the rain is light, there is the possibility this could happen in other neighborhoods. we're really hoping for steady consistent rain to really wash those lines clear. so that's that's the hope at this point the more rain we get the clearer the lines will be

now being offered for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the high-level leaders of organized auto burglary fencing operations. every time they pay off a thief their friends and their associates the people that know who they are and know what they do. that's and this reward helps provide a motivation for those people to stand up and do the right thing and let us know who they are so that we can shut them down officials from the hospitality and tourism industry. and have become so frustrated with these car break-ins that private donors have offered to fund the new cash reward system last july the mayor expanded the number of community based ambassadors and police patrols in tourist and retail areas since then there has been a in percent drop in otto burglaries, the police chief said 26 officers were added the majority of them focusing on the fisherman's wharf area this is

the mayor who was hoping that this reward system will help track down the people at the top. strings we know that this is just bigger than just breaking in a car and finding things. it's like finding things that you can sell to someone who then sells it on a larger platform. sometimes online that there's a market out there for this. so we're going to need a lot more help and locally here in san francisco. we need state and federal support. hear you right now. go ahead. it happens in san francis in so for all the talk of state and federal help on controlling the internet sales the fact is this is happening in our city and it's happening to people visiting our city most often in part because they have the things that these are looking for and second of all because they're going to be gone. they might fill out a police report, but they're not going to be around to identify the goods if they get back and the thieves

know it this is an organized group that goes out there. there's these different policies there's usually report in a car they travel around they work the parking lots. they size one person goes in size up which cars to hit usually rental cars. another one comes in smashes the window the other one could grabs the stuff it all goes in the car and it's all out of there six or seven cars can get hit within a matter of minutes before the cops, even though it's going on. just wondering phil is this happening in other cities, especially cities known for their tourism or is this a problem that is unique to san francisco. well, it is happening in other cities, but you have to understand that in san francisco. we have people that drive here for the day whether it's fisherman's wharf or going out to the marina, and we also have a deceptive situation. i mean there is no real safe place in the city where you're safe from this, but you would think that if you were stay out at the marina at the palace of legion of honor and you're enjoying the day and you're surrounded by multimillion dollar homes along the waterfront with the golden gate

bridge and everybody out that you would be safe and the fact is that's exactly where these guys are hitting and they know that the goods are there and they get them out and they fence them on the internet. so in a place where you're safe, you're actually not and that's something pretty unique to san francisco. yeah, you could see people think oh these beautiful surroundings what could happen here? and then they end up being victims phil. thanks so much for your time. take care. a mother accused of throwing drunken sex parties for teenagers in los gatos was brought back to the bay area today to face charges shannon o'connor also known as shannon bruga now lives in idaho. she's there in the wheelchair arriving at san jose's airport investigators say she got teens drunk at her home and encouraged them to take part in sex acts sometimes non-consensual her two teenage sons are now in the custody of the state of idaho. the city of san jose is considering a new proposal for what do with one of the largest homeless encampments located near san jose international

airport the city previously agreed on a plan with the faa to build a fence around the park. but as abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey explains mayor sam. licardo wants a difference solution. in the skies the planes planes to fly in and out of san jose. national airport on the ground the work is just beginning to clear one of the city's biggest homeless encampments the city of san jose and the faa came to an agreement this past summer to sweep guadalupe river park and build. surround it to prevent re-encampment now mayor sam licardo and members of the city council are offering an alternative our focus rather than building fences, which was a prior. proposal really focuses on a human solution the plan would prioritize the rehousing of the estimated 250 to 300 unhoused residents to city supportive housing in addition, utilizing 1.5 million in airport funds originally proposed for the fencing and three million in city housing funds the city

would sweep the park using park rangers and police and install barriers to keep the park open and prevent encampments. our public parks are for everyone. including the unhoused we simply don't want encampments in those parks. and so we're going to do everything we can. sure, there are public parks are for everybody. the original agreement came when the faa threatened to pull federal funding if the encampment was not cleared from the park near sjc federal regulations require a buffer zone due to unacceptable noise levels from landing planes and that's where this camp resides airport officials stood by the original plan for a fence around the park today during the city council meeting citing lowest costs and the least likely chances for re-encampment. look our city is besieged with a crisis. more sense. there's no question about it. and there's a lot more that we need to do and we've got an ambitious plan to build aggressively to get more of our in-house residence off the street. but this cannot be a city where we build fences and walls to keep members of our public out of public spaces. we reached out to the faa, but they did not respond to our

burger chain are defiant after having their only san francisco location being briefly shut down by the department of public health in and out at fisherman's wharf is back open, but only for takeout the restaurant was ordered to cease all operations last thursday after health inspectors found workers repeatedly failing to verify that customers who were eating inside were actually vaccinated they reopened the next day for takeout only. out sent us a statement reading as follows. we refuse to become the vaccination police for any government. it is unreasonable invasive and unsafe to force our restaurant associates to segregate customers into those who may be served and those who may not whether based on the documentation they carry or any other reasons san francisco department of public health said vaccination is particularly important in a public indoor setting where groups of people are gathering and removing their masks factors that make it year for the virus to spread. this is why san francisco

going to be breezy inland as well. the gusty winds continue tomorrow morning before they begin to ease now. i want to show you the hour by hour timeline of the rain seven o'clock. it's around the mendocino coast as we go into 9 pm the north bay's getting wet. we start to see some wet weather around the east bay down towards the santa cruz mountains strongest part of the storm the heaviest rain at 9 pm is still to the north of us, but we will see some brief pockets of moderate rain going into the overnight hours hours and then tomorrow morning scattered showers. brewery roadways, you know the drill with the oil is getting drawn up might want to give yourself that extra time if you are commuting or going somewhere tomorrow afternoon some more showers coming through going into tomorrow evening. that's the same storm now rainfall totals between tonight and tomorrow night highest to our north about three-quarters of an inch cloverdale about a tenth of an inch of the inland east bay, but some of the wetter north bay locations will be picking up over an inch of rain morning temperatures with windy conditions 40s 50s certainly will need the gear as you head

called out at 7:30 in the morning for rekindle. the wind was howling what we call the diablo the east winds gusting up to 70 miles an hour. winds you have to remember a category one hurricane has starting at around 74 miles per hour. imagine combining that with what turned out to be the hottest day in the bay area in more than a century sadly you put all those conditions together. it's the perfect mix. for what was to come? we're working on several hotspot. we have on both sides of the canyon and it's just gonna take this wind is really whipping them up. we have a train fire conditions are starting up at this time. the hot spots up here on the old fire scene are going to create quite a problem back then another engine company up here. they thought they had it out and then went really kicked up the smoke just a popping out. ground and you could feel the

heat coming through your boots. and then there was big rumbling sound and the ground started to shake and it sounded like a 747 was right overhead. the debrief in the eucalyptus was hitting the ground and catching on fire. the last thing i remember was reverse cascade of fire from the ground to the top of the trees and then it just the whole line of trees next to the houses. just blew up. like i'm down to bottom. here we got big problems. you better give me some companies down here too. this is coming down this way down where i am. we've got to at least a hundred acres trees brush houses. don't think we're going to stop this thing. darker and darker a friend from up the hill said it's black smoke here. we're leaving. and then the neighbor who had called me about the tunnel being closed and it's crested the hill. get out now.

out to try to find my husband. he took the dog in one car. i took my nine-year-old daughter in the other car. and as i back out of my driveway hiller drive. bumper to bumper traffic somebody had to stop to let me get in. and the fire was coming down that hillside that hillside had eucalyptus the eucalyptus brands were blowing over to the other side. you can actually hear trees exploding. background the flames are coming down the hill. it's so hot. i'm like this with the air conditioning full blast. and all of a sudden i'm see people behind me running across the hill. to go down a tunnel road because the fire has crossed the road behind me.

throw with eucalyptus it just exploded. all of a sudden i'm standing there and it goes what and it was like being in a movie it was not real, but it was real. oh, it was real. all right, and scary joining us now is abc 7 news? order leslie brinkley who worked on this special i had a friend who went up to try to help and ended up suffering smoke inhalation because he was just overwhelmed but what are we going to learn in this special us? well, i think what we le that fires can and do happen in our backyards. i think we all think of wildfires as being in up in the mountains up and open space in parks bordering open space, but this was a true urban wildfire in the sense that this fire was approaching the city of berkeley. it was a scary moment in time. i think we that i think we also

learned and i know i did personally from covering the fire. it's good to live somewhere where you know, you're escape routes and it's good to know that you've got perhaps you live somewhere where there. to escape routes not just one narrow one lane road going away from your home. so a lot of lessons to be taken away from this larry and kristen and leslie you cover the east bay hills fires for a long time after and and just going there in the aftermath what stood out to you because just looking at the video i think deathly and desolate is how it feels what about in person when you were there? kind of a moonscape. i was working the night shift at the time. so the entire week at the after the fire. i was up in the oakland hills at sthe chieys ofput out the hot sr like these weird ghostly memorials. homes that once stood there one of the homeowners.

i remember talking to some people reacted by screaming and having a meltdown. they lost everything one man in particular though. i know brought up candles brought up bottles of wine walked through. what was his doorway? sat down in the ruins and pondered and thought back on his life there and kind of assessed. this is he didn't lose his life. he just lost possessions. i was blown away. by a lot of the people i met that week, but it is those ghostly ghastly chimneys. this is one of them still standing up here. that's the part of a memorial up near the caldecott tunnel scary times. yeah, and so many people did go back to rebuild. how are the current fire seasons different from back then because it seems like we cover so much more of the disasters that are taking place in the north bay. and thank goodn bay hills have d largely unscathed. that's a good question because i think there's some positives from it. it was after the oakland hills

fire that the big push was on to clear brush and backyard. to be careful of the land around your home to transition away from wood shake roofs. i mean there have been lots of things that have been embedded in our brains ever since that fire. we've also been told to have go bags ready to be prepared more than we were i think back then but on a of side as you know, we are seeing these fires crop up all over santa rosa in a suburban interface with the rural area the oakland hills fire was an urban rural interface and i think one of the things we take away from it that that makes it worse now is drought climate change, so i can't forget those images. it was ghastly seen and something that hopefully we can learn from larry and kristen. all right, leslie. thank you so much. so many lessons to be learned and so relevant today, so please
