you are watching abc 7 news at four. we have team coverage of the storm. cornell barnard is in the north bay. >> we will begin with sandhya patel. >> showers coming through with drizzle. i know it is not impressive, but that front that brought us the rain overnight into this morning is stalled. street-level radar across santa cruz area. pleasanton seeing wet weather. you will notice across highway nine, it is slippery out there. while it is not raining everywhere, we are watching this moist flow with a light level 1 system continuing to move in. how much rain did we get? trace amounts in the south and east bay. all the way to over an inch in santa rosa. this system is not done yet.

we will see waves of showers. 5:00, wet weather. showers continue tomorrow morning. there will be wet roadways and another batch comes through here at 10:00. that is going to be more moderate in intensity. that is not the only system we are tracking. the seven day forecast for rain chances, stronger storms, and a look at the atmospheric weather forecast. kristen: let's give you a live look outside from our tower camera in the north bay. right now, you can see the freeways are moving pretty well, although the roads are slick and dreary. cornell barnard has conditions. >> we got light rain falling right now off of highway 101. it is a welcome sight, but the possibility of too much rain over a short period of time has

north bay cities on alert. one homeowner says the rain caused a tree to fall. >> we we are in the kitchen and we hear a loud crunch. we said, what is that? >> it was a large pine tree which toppled in this yard in mill valley. the tree took power lines down with it. david believes recent rain is to blame. >> the ground got saturated. old trees have been there a while. cornell: the rainmaking for a slow drive on highway 101 and lots of umbrellas deployed. i game to beat the clock for public works crews to clear storm drains before a forecasted atmospheric weather which could bring rain. >> the past few weeks we have been focusing on the curbs, cleaning out catch basins, just trying to get a head start on the rain to avoid flooding and clogging. >> flooding now on the radar for

firefighters who are less concerned about wildfire threats. >> we have low-lying areas that are prone to flooding. especially if the rain is coming down at a rate that is not consistent with the tide, you get high tide and rain float the same time. low-lying areas are prone to flooding. cornell: mill valley post this special advisory to be careful and take precautions. this sandbag station is open in santa rosa city. >> we are making sure our community knows what it means to actually be prepared for the rain, making sure that those homes in and around our area are protected and prepared. cornell: firefighters will be watching those burn scar areas for sure. with so much rain in the forecast, police and fire crews simply urge drivers to slow down and avoid accidents.

larry: good advice. the rain sparked this power pole higher in oakland, knocking out electricity to 11 customers. pg&e crews on the scene. the utility says light rain turned to dirt on power lines into mud, which conducts energy that can start fires. the outage caused this food manufacturer to close and move their refrigerated food. pg and he expects power to be restored by tonight. outages in berkeley, albany and some on the pollen and on the peninsula. >> i used to be a flight attendant. i am thinking, what is going to happen next? you do not want to explode. i think it was scary. larry: some of the outages were brief because pg and e were able to switch customers through different line.

this map illustrates a wide swath of outages with -- the areas hit hardest include oakland where pg&e says power should be back on by 7:00. san mateo service is expected to return at around 5:30. kristen: chp warning drivers headed to lake tahoe to be careful. crews are working to clear trees and fix systems along highway 50 in the area of the caldor fire burn scar. the loss of foliage creates perfect conditions for mud and rock slides. chp says the best thing to do is stay alert, drive slowly and keep a distance between you and the cars ahead of you. keep an eye on the storm with live doppler seven. you can see it on the bay area streaming app on roku, amazon fire, android and apple tv. larry: a good reminder that flu season is here. while it was basically nonexistent through much of the pandemic, doctors are warning this year could be worse.

stephanie sierra is live in the newsroom with a look at the importance of getting that flu shot. >> two studies came out suggest we have since we have had such low flu activity resulting in less immunity, this upcoming flu season will be much worse. these models suggest it won't just be more cases, but predict hundreds of thousands of additional flu hospitalizations. whether you are coughing, sneezing or just feel under the weather, it is a dreary reminder that flu season is not only here , but sweeping and fast. >> we predict there are going to be a lot more flu cases. people getting infected, but also people getting hospitalized. >> we will see far more flu cases this winter then covid cases. two new studies recently purchased, not yet peer-reviewed, showed a similar sentiment.

one study predicted there could be an additional 100,000-4 hundred thousand flu-related hospitalizations this fall and winter. >> the estimates are on target but it comes with some uncertainty. and the uncertainty around how bad it could be, meaning it is going to be worse for sure than last year. >> how much worse? that part is unclear. >> the reason why we are not sure is we do not have information from other parts of the world because everybody didn't have bad flu in the last year or so. >> since we do not have population immunity from the flu last year, it leaves us more vulnerable. usually scientists will look at the flu -- in the southern hemisphere to help predict what may happen in the u.s.. >> the empirical data from the southern hemisphere is that rates have remained had -- at historically low levels in

australia and most of the southern hemisphere. in australia, fewer than 10% of the tests they have been done have been positive. >> but added, we can't be too safe. >> if we do have a covid surge and a flu search on top of that, it creates extra pressure on the hospitals. >> we have already started to see shifting immunity with other viruses like rsv. that is usually contracted in the winter, but became more common in the summer this year. he says when changes like that happen, it could further prolong our current flu season, even past april or may. larry: it gets tricky because symptoms for flu and covid are similar. how do doctors recommend we differentiate between the two? people are going to be in a room, one person coughs, everne freakou >> hen thahaene and again. dr.utherford ys the main --

for covid is upper respiratory systems -- symptoms. for flu, fever, cough, muscle pains. for covid, cough, runny nose, upper respiratory issues, especially if you are struggling to breathe. as always, consult your doctor first if you experience any of these symptoms because it can certainly be easy to mix them. kristen: the los gatos mom accused of throwing drunken sex parties for teenagers was arraigned. a judge ruled shannon o'connor be held without bail. investigators say she got teens as young as 14 drunk at her home and encouraged them to take part in sex acts. sometimes nonconsensual. o'connor faces 39 counts. her two teenage sons were removed from her custody. the san francisco district attorney announced a grand jury

forecast, this rain we have had is enough to whet the appetite? but the heavy rain is coming. sandhya: heavy rain this weekend with an atmospheric river. live doppler seven, this is just a little drizzle and spotty showers on radar. we get you to street level, seeing drizzle around black hawk road, south gate road. the sierra has been clouds and rain. snow levels are high. between 8000 feet and 10,000 feet, which means rain and high elevation snow. this weekend, levels come down. they could see heavy snow. from the golden gate bridge, clouds are stacked up. low to mid 60's for everyone from san francisco to oakland. santa fe, half moon bay. no is not an issue. -- we had is not an issue.

visibility is fluctuating for some parts of the bay. from the south beach camera, showers off and on tomorrow. gusty and wet mainly friday morning is the next system arrives. a stronger storm is due sunday night into monday. today and tomorrow, light system. scattered showers, moderate in pockets tomorrow. it will be breezy. wet weather at 5:00. notice the showers are widely scattered at 9:00 p.m.. tomorrow morning's commute will include slippery roadways. we get the moderate pocket of rain coming through at 11:00. notice the rain line lifts northward for the afternoon and evening. the best possibility of rain will be in the north bay. temperatures in the morning will be in the 50's and 60's. make sure you have your rain gear before you head out the door. in the afternoon in the north bay, hang onto it. scattered showers. it is going to be a mild day.

low 60's to mid 70's. now we show you what is ahead. it is an atmospheric river. the main aim is northern california but it looks like it is going to slide into our area. with that, rainfall totals will add. several inches of rain expected tuesday night. the southern end of the viewing area, one to two inches. same thing for the east. northbay, you are looking at almost half a foot in santa rosa. just over that in ukiah. that could lead to problems. we will be watching that carefully. off and on showers, level 1 today. level 1 friday. this is when it will be gusty. saturday, you get a break until the evening. that is when the next round of showers comes in. sock -- stronger storm sunday monday with a lingering chance tuesday.

larry: governor newsom signed an order today to unplug the bottleneck at shipping lanes. state agencies to find properties for temporarily storing shipping containers. he is asking state agencies to find something that worked in oakland to establish education programs. then national guard may soon be stepping into help fix those supply chain issues. the biden administration exploring the idea of having troops assist in the effort to break the bottlenecks by unloading cargo. they are considering the possibility of easing tariffs. kristen: supply chain problems could affect thanksgiving. turkeys could be in short supply and cost more. jenae norman has tactics to help

hopes to get out of it. we are sitting in a situation where facebook is under tremendous pressure and scrutiny. they have been criticized from left, right and center over all sorts of things. in particular, the stories that came out of the wall street journal. if you have not read them, i recommend you do. in them, one of the things they highlight is how facebook is aware of a lot of the negative effects it has on society, but also appears not to really act on that knowledge. that has caused even more than an uproar. changing its name, i do not know if that is going to change anything. supposedly, mark zuckerberg wants to draw attention to the good stuff it does. for example, the virtual reality new wave technology ideas it is working on. it is an interesting move. larry: they are not going to change the name facebook, just

like google. as long as it is facebook, they are still going to have the same issues. anything negative attached to the brand is going to remain attached to the brand. >> if they change their name completely, it is still facebook, with all of the problems we have seen and talked about for years. the issue i worry about is whether or not facebook is truly meeting the challenge of this moment, or if they are looking for other ways to dampen criticism. if it is the second, that is worrying. larry: it is, but the way the company is responding doesn't make you believe they will suddenly have this epiphany. they are expanding their businesses and their role. you referenced it, talking about the meta-verse, a reference to a virtual world of augmented reality. some people believe this could replace the internet. >> look, the promise of this new

technology idea has been something we have talked about in sci-fi for a long time. if you saw the movie ready player one, that is treated like a form of the bible in parts of silicon valley. they were literally handing out to new employees at facebook at one point with their virtual reality company because they really saw that as a guide book for what they want to create. at least in terms of experience and ideas. i think there is something to say about where technology is going. we are not all going to be living with computer screens and phones in our pockets forever. the question a lot of people had is where do we end up? who is going to get us there? if we can't deal with these fundamental issues around harassment and disinformation, all of these other things, how can we trust them to be stewards of this next step in technology.

larry: new york city is considering a new law that would require free internet in every apartment. there are as many as half a million households currently without internet access in new york. existing buildings with 10 or more apartments would have to comply by the year 2026. the councilmember putting forth this proposal tweeted that internet access is as much a basic necessity as heat and hot water. a landor group responded by telling a real estate site, what's next? free gyms? [laughter] >> there are so thoughtful. what do you think of this? i am assuming these buildings are internet ready, it's just that the people can't afford it. so, where do we go from here? >> great question. the gym thing is funny, but a totally different thing. i would say these days, the internet is a basic necessity. to keep you informed and have

access to certain goods and services. they are going to pay probably one way or another. in terms of rent that is a list that us -- everybody these days would expect access to the internet. i thick it a basic. >> your guess is a good one because i think this is an -- this is about the service the landlord needs to provide for free. they will probably just tack it onto the rent. >> should that be something the cable companies provide for people that have a minimal income and can qualify? >> i think it is more important than just convenience these days. it really does keep you connected to the world and puts you on more equal footing. >> remember the little girls in salinas who did not have access to the internet? there are people who obviously can't afford it and it is essential. >> here's another one.

some people will go to great lengths to secure their dream home. a couple in canada went overboard. a couple bought a house slated for definite -- demolition in newfoundland and had it. across obey. >> status quo. >> -- that is so cool. >> they tied it to a metal frame to keep it upright. at one point, a corner of the house dipped into the water. the engine died. >> it looks like it is sinking. >> other boat owners stepped up and helped get the house to its new location. >> one reason i love this job is every we learn something or see something new. we have seen houses going down the street but i have never seen this. >> that is incredible. how do you get the idea? some people will move their houses, but let's get all of
