san francisco, the schools are facing budget cuts. schools are trying to tackle declining enrollment. other districts in california are seeing the same. we hear about one option to change the placement process. >> that is where you write your name, write a message, draw a picture. >> schools are funded by the amount of students enrolled. take san francisco unified. the district had about 60,000 students before the pandemic. during the pandemic, it saw 3500 students leave the district. a loss of 6%. >> i think some of our families who had the means during the pandemic look for schools that were open outside of the district. >> some families moved to other cities because of the high cost of living in san francisco. that 6% decline translates into

a potential loss of $35 million in state funding. >> we are working on a lot of different strategies. >> that is the director who is working to change how parents take their schools. it would be called a zone-based process. >> instead of selecting your top choices anywhere in san francisco regardless of where you live, the school district would have parents opting for the ones located in their zone. giving them more neighborhood school options. >> trying to help people not have to travel too far. to create these zones where there is some flexibility and some consistency. >> the rollout of this zone-based process is expected to begin in 2024. in the meantime, right now, the district will have in person workshops for parents.
