ac news now projecting the win for governor phil murphy, defeating republican challenger jack ciattarelli. murphy becoming the first democratic governor re-elected in new jersey in more than 40 years. the race spotlighting the national divide over the response to covid. the closer than expect results sounding the alarm for democrats already concerned after that vi chose republican glenn youngkin to be the next governor handing terry mcauliffe a bitter defeat in a state that president biden carried easily in 2020. youngkin providing republicans with the blueprint for electoral success focused on the economy, parental fears over education and keep donald trump at a distance while still enjoying his endorsement, and it paid off. >> if you're a democrat and president biden won your seat by 16 points, you're in a competitive race next year. you are no longer safe. >> reporter: with fear mounting about their midterm prospects some democrats blaming themselves for not doing more. >> only in washington could

people think that it is a smart strategy to take a once in a generation investment in infrastructure and prevent your president from signing that bill into law. >> reporter: president biden still pushing to pass his domestic agenda as soon as ns. the american people. we have to just produce results for them to change their standard of living and give them a little more breathing room. >> reporter: the house could vote on the president's domestic agenda as early as today. a growing number of democrats on capitol hill say after these results they cannot afford to miss another deadline. george? >> okay, rachel, thanks very much. let's bring in our chief washington correspondent jon karl. there is a debate about what the democrats should do on those packages going forward. some say cut back, go for the bipartisan package. scale back the progressive ambitions. others say full speed ahead. >> reporter: well, it comes to what was the message that voters were sending in these elections, george.

to some democrats it was that joe biden and congressional leadership was trying to do too much. to others it was that they accomplished too little. they agreed that voters -- that this is a wake-up call for democrats. the party has to get their act together but there is a split, you're right, about what to do about it and makes it harder to see how they get it accomplished. joe biden and nancy pelosi are saying full speed ahead and pelosi wants to see a vote on the full two bills as early as today but i think passing both of those bills just got a heck of a lot harder. >> so many messages coming out of the elections. one of the big ones, focus on crime and education. >> reporter: absolutely. especially in the suburbs where the battle will be fought for control of congress. republicans were able to exploit fears, parents' fears with crime and, look, we are in the third straight -- third consecutive school year in the covid era and parents are frustrated. republicans played into that, said that they had a solution.

now republicans are talking about running on a so-called parents' bill of rights. democrats need an answer on both issues. >> jon karl, thanks very much. michael? now to the fight against the pandemic. thousands of kids age 5 to 11 already getting that pfizer shot across the country. president biden calling it a time of, quote, relief and celebration for parents. let's go to whit johnson at the mass vaccination site at citi field in new york. good morning, whit. >> reporter: good morning. starting today new york city run vaccination sites like this one are opening their doors to kids 5 to 11 years old and by next week the city's public schools will be offering shots on campus, but this nationwide rollout is still getting up to speed and scheduling appointments right away could be a challenge. this morning, the white house promising it secured enough doses for the 28 million 5 to 11-year-olds across the country. >> after almost 18 months of

able to get his first dose before thanksgiving. >> no appointments available. every single appointment for the month of november was already booked. grandfather just had a heart attack. i want my son to visit his grandfather and he needs to be vaccinated to do that. >> reporter: and today the biden administration is expected to release new vaccine mandate requirements for health care workers and businesses with 100 or more employees. enforcement begins january 4th. the new rules will essentially label covid an occupational hazard and will impact about two-thirds of the u.s. workforce. george? >> okay, whit, thanks. we turn to concerns about a potential nuclear arms race. an alarming report claims china is increasing its nuclear arsenal at a much faster rate than the u.s. anticipated. senior foreign correspondent ian pannell has the details. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george. that's right. another potentially worrying sign of what the pentagon says is china's military buildup and

certainly a ramping up of the growing tension between china and the u.s. a new pentagon report this morning warning china could be rapidly increasing its nuclear warhead arsenal. the pentagon assessment estimates beijing plans to have 700 warheads by 2027 and could have a thousand by 2030. that's more than double what u.s. officials estimated only a year ago. now the chairman of the joint chiefs issuing this stark warning on china's military capabilities. >> we're witnessing one of the largest shifts in global geostrategic power. >> reporter: cent satellite imagery showing hundreds of silos under construction in western china. > clearly the pentagon has been shaken by the advances that the chinese military has made. >> reporter: this new pentagon assessment comes just weeks after news broke of china's apparent hypersonic glide weapons test, a system that in theory could be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead that the u.s. can't see or defeat. beijing denying it carried out such a test.

>> reporter: once the chinese perfect this capability, it will be extremely destabilizing because the u.s. has nothing like it. can't even detect these hypersonic weapons before impact. >> reporter: well, china has just been responding saying this report ignores facts and is full of prejudice. beijing accusing america of being a much greater threat with thousands more nuclear weapons that its own arsenal is purely defensive. but, robin, the language and posture on both sides is increasingly hardening. >> people are watching. ian, thank youment. we're going to turn to that new intelligence bulletin revealing that a modified drone was found near an electrical substation. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has more on the threat drones could pose. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: robin, good morning. homeland security officials fear this was a plot to knock out power to potentially thousands of customers in pennsylvania. take a look at this drone. it had been modified with nylon ropes and copper wire and crashed into a building adjacent to the substation you mentioned.

according to an intelligence bulletin obtained by abc news officials believe it's the first time a drone has likely been used to try to deliberately damage our energy infrastructure. and here's why they suspect this was nefarious. the drone's on board camera, memory storage card and all identifiable markings were deleted. whoever did this did not want to be caught. here's what's most disturbing about this july 2020 incident, this new homeland security bulletin warns that this kind of assault using drones to attack our critical infrastructure is likely to increase. robin? >> appreciate your reporting as always, pierre, thank you. michael? we turn now to the ahmaud arbery murder trial. a nearly all white jury has been selected for the case of three white men accused of killing an unarmed black man while he was jogging near his georgia home early last year. steve osunsami is at the courthouse in brunswick, georgia. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. it's taken them weeks here in south georgia to seat a jury in the trial against the three

white men accused of murdering ahmaud arbery and this morning, the race of the jurors selected have some people questioning whether this trial can be fair. of the 12 jurors here who will be sworn in tomorrow 11 of them are white and only one of them is african-american in a community where nearly one out of every three residents is black. >> we ask the court to find that the state has made its prima facie showing of racial discrimination. >> reporter: the issue of color is at the heart of the case with prosecutors arguing that the young black man killed would never have been stopped by the white men with guns if he too were white. in court wednesday the judge said out loud that the jury could have been more diverse. >> this court has found that there appears to be intentional discrimination in the panel. quite a few african-american jurors were excused through preemptive strikes exercised by the defense, but that doesn't mean that the court has the

authority to reseat. >> reporter: finding potential jurors who haven't already picked a side here has been tough. a number of potential jurors were dismissed because they were family friends or even former co-workers of two of the accused. on trial are travis mcmichael, his father gregory mcmichael and a neighbor william "roddie" bryan jr. they're accused of murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempt at false imprisonment. this video of what happened has been seen around the world. in february of last year, 25-year-old ahmaud arbery is seen here being gunned down after the three men are seen chasing him in the street. the young man's family says he was out jogging but attorneys for the mcmichaels say the shooting victim is the same person walking around in these videos from a home under construction down the street from travis mcmichael's home. the mcmichaels say they saw arbery walking away from that construction site again and say the shooting was justified under

georgia's citizen's arrest statute which was the law at the time. overnight arbery's mother told abc news she's looking forward to seeing justice come from this trial. >> everything that i prayed for, god has given it to me. and i know i've prayed and asked for justice for my son. i'm sure he will give me that as well. >> reporter: back at the statehouse in atlanta there was outrage over the citizen's arrest law that these three men are trying to use to defend themselves in this case. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle repealed it. this trial is expected to start in earnest on friday and last a couple of weeks. michael? >> all right, steve. abc newslive will have extensive daily coverage of the trial beginning this friday. george? >> okay, michael, thanks. we turn now to some relief for americans on the road this holiday season. gas prices appear to have

reigning nfl mvp has testd positive for covid and now questions are swirling about his vaccination status. espn sources saying the green bay packers quarterback is unvaccinated. >> the lombardi trophy is coming home. >> reporter: many believed rodgers was vaccinated and thus subject to less stringent league protocols after this exchange at an august press conference. >> are you vaccinated and what's your status on vaccinations? >> yeah, i've been immunized. you know, there's a lot of conversation around it, around the league and a lot of guys who have made statements and not made statements, owners who made statements. you know, there's guys on the team that haven't been vaccinated. i think it's a personal decision. i'm not going to judge them. >> reporter: according to espn, the nfl has been treating rodgers as unvaccinated since the beginning of the season. espn reporting that he appealed

to the league before the season asking it to recognize an alternative treatment as a replacement to a covid vaccine. a request the league reportedly denied. >> i assume the process is the players have to show some sort of proof of vaccination. when he obviously did not have the traditional covid-19 vaccine card, he will be asked what he meant by immunized and whether he deliberately or even unintentionally deceived people. >> reporter: the nfl has not issued a vaccine mandate to its players or coaches. but those who choose not to get the shot must wear masks inside team facilities, be tested daily and follow numerous social distancing guidelines. unvaccinated players also face a mandatory ten-day wait to return to the team after a positive test. in a statement obtained by the nfl network, the nfl saying the primary responsibility for enforcement of the covid protocols within club facilities rests with the club. failure to properly enforce the protocols has resulted in discipline being assessed against individual clubs in the

virginia. another state the president easily won in 2020. voters chose republican glenn youngkin to be the next governor and he provided a road map for other republicans, focus on the economy, parental concerns about education, and even with an endorsement from the former president donald trump he kept his distance. democrats are now reassessing. some are blaming themselves for not doing more. the president's message, get his domestic agenda on his desk. the house could vote on that as early as today, george. >> rachel scott, thanks very much. now to a big headline about the benefits of the hpv vaccine. researchers in england finding up to an 87% reduction in cervical cancer rates in women who have had the shot. our chief medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton joins us now with more. good morning, jen. >> good morning. >> this is great news. also, it's a huge reduction in cancer rates. >> it is massive news. to set this up for you guys, this is the most common sexually

transmitted infection in the country, most hpv, human papillomavirus does not go on to cause cancer but it is responsible for the majority of cervical cancers. what this study found in england, it was a massive observational study with a lot of follow-up and found up to an 87% reduction in detected cervical cancers, up to a 97% reduction in precancer of the cervix which is significant. those are the so-called abnormal pap smears that trigger a lot of procedures and have a lot of negative side effects down the road. >> it's not just women who could benefit. the hpv vaccine for girls and boys. >> it's boys and men, glad you brought that up. it is fda approved for boys and girls to be vaccinated starting at age 11 or 12 and it is fda approved for what's called catch-up for men and women up through the age of 45. initially we thought that was because boys were or men were

november is national caregiver's month and so for the season finale of thriver thursday we want to introduce you to loretta whose creative approach for caring her 92-year-old mother diagnosed with alzheimer's disease is helping countless others. >> how lovely. >> the first time your loved one doesn't remember you, that is shocking. when we were kids, my mother bought all kinds of lego boxes for me. we would spend hours building. i never outgrew that hobby. when she was first diagnosed she just clammed up and wouldn't share a lot. so we would get the legos so she would talk. it was the one thing that really relaxed her. >> want it right there? okay. >> so i became a certified facilitator in something called lego serious play in 2014. i use that to help me continue to communicate with my mom way after she could know who i was

and all that. it was so much fun for her. i was like, well, i can do this with other folks with dementia so i started going to assisted living places and senior centers and doing some lego activities with them. >> i am in awe with what she does to go from researching, writing a book, studying about legos and now turning it into a whole movement. >> i want to inspire caregivers who are afraid or they're losing hope, surviving really is just going day to day kind of going through the motions. i try to really exceed that. a thriver is someone who continues on with a smile no matter what is occurring that day. >> she has a beautiful smile. >> she sure does. >> how thethriver -- what it means to them. i hope people know this. so many caregivers will tell you how alone they can feel sometimes and through her experience loretta learned the true power of support groups having a vast network of

the castelomendes family has a very special guest. chef jamie oliver is out with "together: memorable meals made easy." how to make their favorite go to meals greener, also save money. good morning, everybody. how are you doing? >> good morning, everybody. >> good morning. >> how are you? >> we are doing great. now, jamie, i know a lot of these dish, pasta with meatballs, rice, pizza, tacos, everyone's favorites. tell us what you'll take them through with this. >> well, listen, look, we love that food and one of the things that we've seen in the last year is the price of meat has gone up 10%. and, of course, the whole conversation about the environment and all the emissions that come from the meat, it's in all of our interest to try and reduce the amount of meat we have but still celebrate the dishes we love. one of the things that i love to do is the 50/50 rule. that's embracing other forms of protein so these beans, lentils, we can use mushrooms for flavor

and chickpeas. do the 50/50 rule. it really works. today i'm going to do a delicious dish. we'll do a pasta fagioli soup. what we've got here is a lovely array of veggies. squash, carrots, onion, garlic. just spend a little time to fry them in a pan. have a look at that and see the color, see the bottom of the pan. that bottom of the pan is flavor. once you've got that, we're going to go in with some of those beans, super cheap. super delicious. fantastic source of protein. we'll go in with tomatoes and then we'll go in with two tins of water. we'll bring that to the boil. now, we're all talking about how we can be more eco-friendly and use up all the things and not waste them. one thing we waste is odds and ends of pasta. we've all got little bits of pasta and just take those little bits, smash them up.

over here we have some smashes, so go into your cupboards, go and get the random bits of pasta and give it a really good smashup. once you've done that, let's have a little look. that's what we've got, we've taken those different pastas then we can put it in the soup. this is a beautifully rustic soup and we can use up all of the odds and ends of the pasta, so no waste there, and let it simmer for 20 minutes. now, on my right, this lovely lady here has been making a meal. how easy was it to do? >> so easy. >> smash up a little herb. have a look at this soup. on a perfect day like this, loads of the veggies, the rosemary there. just put a little olive oil, just a little more, and if i serve up some of this soup, look how good it is, all the veggies, pasta, hot and steaming. myself and the crew and the family, we're freezing, but we'll be okay. everything is going to be okay
