moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. more excitement than trepidation in the east bay today as contra costa county kicked off. its school vaccine clinics aimed at children ages 5 to 11. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm on a date and i'm dan ashley. you're watching abc 7 news at five live here on abc 7 hulu live and wherever you stream glad you are with us. well, the clinics were held in richmond and san pablo abc news reporter leslie brinkley visited one of the sites where families were grateful that the vaccines were made. accessible i told my mom about it and then she said okay, let's go and get it. this six-year-old said it was a piece of cake to get the vaccine especially in a school library with disney music playing and plenty of cookies while you're here to tell other kids it was okay. yeah.

what should they do? they should listen. and go get their shot. yeah. that's perfect. others needed some persuasion here at eastern elementary school on day one of a pop-up vaccine clinic for five to 11 year olds. he was actually really excited about coming. he just got a little bit nervous when it was time. to happen to his arm. i covid-19 vaccine first shot. three weeks. i'm gonna get my second shot here. do you want to show us your vaccine card? that's pretty cool. we really want to focus on schools because we wanted to bring the vaccination efforts to the community and meet families and kids where they're at. the school is really a trusted messenger for families a trend to stay for children and families clinics will continue on wednesday at tara hills elementary school in san pablo and right here at nystrom and highland elementary schools in richmond by friday and saturday. the school clinics will extend all the way out to pittsburgh

first having people vaccinated when you're exposed to thousands of people whether it be in our jail setting or out in the public it makes everybody safer. so it makes the first responders safer and the people that we come in contact safer if everybody's vaccinated for the nearly 4,000 emergency personnel in the county like fire sheriffs and emts a new choice get fully vaccinated or take weekly tests and wear a mask while in the presence of patients or residents while entering high-risk health care facilities, alameda county. health officer dr. nicholas moss said in a statement today quote unvaccinated providers entering. risk health care facilities can spread covid-19. this order is necessary. to reduce that risk and protect older and medically vulnerable residents and staff alameda county sheriff gregory. ahern says his office already has a similar mandate in place for their 1700 employees 54% of them have shown proof of full vaccination to this point sheriff. ahern says he respects those who

choose to not get the vaccine and he hopes the mandate doesn't lead to the loss of more critical first responders since they also have the choice to get weekly covid tests. we need every badge personnel we can dealing with the shortages that we have in staffing now. so even one two, three people leaving because of this would be very detrimental to our agency the county employees have until december 21st to provide proof of vaccination and a booster shot is not required in alameda county dustin dorsey abc 7 news. the move from alameda county is similar to action already taken by several others contra costa marin, san francisco, santa clara and sonoma county's have also implemented vaccine requirements for their first responders. california is reversing course in the battle against covid-19 with cases climbing. once again, the state is up. 6,000 new cases per day hospitalizations have jumped 4 percentages two weeks. let's put the state back in the red category for high transmission an experts say the next few months are critical for

would allow san francisco sheriff's deputies to provide private security to stores battling retail theft now that's after the san francisco police. officers association expressed some concern about deputies doing those jobs abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow explains. why? these viral videos highlight the retail theft problems in san francisco from handbags at neiman marcus to toiletries at walgreens this video shot by abc 7 news reporter liam melendez for about a year. i've been ringing the alarm supervisor asha safaii recently proposed san francisco sheriff's deputies provide private security for san francisco stores similar to the private security san francisco police officers, sometimes provide the store's hiring the officers or deputies pay for their overtime many sellers were saying they wanted to hire more law enforcement, but they're just were not enough. officers available the board of supervisors was supposed to take up the proposal today, but yesterday the san francisco.

city in san francisco know when you would row abc 7 news san francisco supervisor, matt haney announced plans today to introduce to introduce a resolution officially apologizing to chinese americans for a century and a half of mistreatment much of early part of san francisco's history was defined by anti-chinese racism and people need to know that we have to tell that history. we have to confront it. we have to be honest about it. haney says the racism continues to this day evidenced by the rise in violent attacks against people of asian descent since the pandemic began. he says the effort is not just symbolic. he says more investments in the chinese-american community need need to be made antioch, san jose. angeles have issued similar apologies this year now, we should know any minute now what will happen to a controversial statue in san jose right now. the city council is discussing whether to take down the statue of former mayor thomas fallon, it currently stands near san pedro square the statue depicts fallon raising the us flag in

serious possible candidate next time they have a presidential run in san francisco. lyanne melendez abc 7 news. a big step today in the ongoing effort to get more affordable housing in san francisco public and private partners took part in a groundbreaking ceremony for a 100% affordable mixed-use transit oriented housing development in the outer mission. project is being built in a parking lot next to balboa park bart station and will provide residents with intensive social employment and training services. we have space in san francisco to build affordable housing for our low-income communities. we have lots of space there are lots of parking lots just like this all over the city and so whenever someone tells you that we people just need to move away that there isn't enough room that just point them to this place. the 131 unit project will take two. to complete it's the first affordable housing development app. under a state senate bill that streamlines legislation for

change millions of lives. it's a potential way of treating patients with severe brain injuries abc 7 news reporter stephanie. sierra has the details. from the battlefield explosions to violent sports injuries millions of patients suffer the lifetime effects of traumatic brain injuries and treating the symptoms is often a frustrating challenge, but now there's hope for a possible breakthrough. this is a pretty big deal in her lab at san francisco's gladstone institute researcher sean pause studies the circuits that relay messages in the brain trying to understand how they change after a traumatic brain injury also known as tbi using animal models her team recording those signals they ultimately identified a disruption in a key area of the brain possibly linked to a host of long-term symptoms from sleeplessness to seizures and along with it a possible suspect after the traumatic brain injuries. there is an upregulation in this molecule called c1q and especially in a deep brain area

called the thalamus and when we blocked the molecule we were able to prevent the chronic neuronal loss and the chronic inflammation and the sleeve disruption in other words major symptoms of tbi the blocker they used was anybody being developed by south san francisco-based annex and biosciences tedknock is chief innovation officer. so it's really interesting about dr. paz's study. is that even 24 hours after the injury. she found that she could treat treat. use our treatment. to walk this process of the company has already conducting clinical trials. the inhibitor for treating als and other conditions and could potentially expand to tbi in the future and with causes ranging from car crashes to simple falls some 69 million people around the world are believed to suffer from traumatic brain injury every year stephanie holden who worked on the gladstone team believes a post injury treatment could be life-changing and the hope that there might be a
