those who were vaccinated to get their booster ahead of thanksgiving. >> santa clara county health officials say everyone is eligible for a covid-19 booster shot. a message that may not have been clear earlier. >> i think with the public heard is i need to be 55 aura shouldn't get a booster. that is not correct. >> when you factor in other medical conditions and those with increased exposure to the virus, there are very few if any people who don't meet the eligibility criteria. >> we know that detection fades from the original vaccine series. >> a little more than 200,000 people have received a booster but more than one million people are eligible to get a booster according to dr. cody. the covid-19 vaccine officer says those who are 65 and older and even higher risk. only 39% have been vaccinated with a booster. >> we urge people out there who have underlying medical

conditions and who are over 65. everybody is pre-much eligible for a booster. >> there are nearly 200 providers in santa clara county from hospitals to clinics to retail pharmacies. when asked if the county is being more lax than those retail pharmacies, the county health official said retail employees are looking for you to state what criteria you believe you meet a booster and that pushback is unlikely. >> nobody would be turned away. >> the important of getting a booster would be highlighted by the county covid-19 cases. dr. cody says the county is not down to where it was before delta and is slowly drifting up. >> health officials say booster takes one to two weeks to be effective. if you're planning ahead for thanksgiving travel or getting together, the time to get your booster would be now. in the newsroom, melanie woodrow. >> what about side effects? have health effects seen any significant issues with booster?

>> health side effects with a booster maybe even more significant than what individuals experienced with the earlier doses. they say it is well worth it. >> thank you. >> this weekend game against u.s. he has been rescheduled after more than 40 players and staff tested positive for covid. these seem to be breakthrough cases. abc 7 news reporter leanne melendez tells us how this happened and the location's going forward. >> last saturday, when cal lost a terrors on her, it was because they were playing with a depleted roster. those out had tested positive for covid. another test revealed an outbreak. a total of 34 players and coaching staff had been infected. the athletic director, jim milton said early on players and staff were tested every day. as the season continued and 99% had received the vaccine, they only tested those who were symptomatic. >> that is how we worked our way

through the season. symptomatic, any symptoms, we immediately had the availability here on campus. >> berkeley public health erected differently, saying cases emerged in an environment of ongoing failure to abide by public health measures. people in the program did not get tested or wear masks indoors. while the football team follows different covid protocols than the general campus, we found there was confusion about testing among the greater student body as well. >> what is the policy if you are fully vaccinated? >> i just know because i am a freshman. if you are the nning in the dorms, you have to get tested once a month. >> to be honest, i don't know the policy. i think it is pretty unclear. >> there were some questions regarding the team being able to play against stanford on november 20.
