dealing with the highest inflation in 30 years and unprecedented supply change challenges, and we're still not past the pandemic. that's right. remember empty store shelves from 2020 shoppers are seeing those again and higher prices. i mean much higher prices than before and speaking of prices. the cost of gas is hitting record levels in the bay area. some stations are charging close to $6 per gallon. but also setting recbut also sec stock market earlier this week the dow closed at its highest point ever. there's a lot going on right now. so, how can we make things better? well, senator alex padilla says the new bipartisan infrastructure bill will benefit california's ports and improve these supply chain issues that have become such a problem padilla today visited the ports of los angeles and long beach which are both experiencing just a huge backlog of container ships. the backlogs have created ripple effects for businesses and

consumers padilla car. the new federal spending bill will not help the short-term problem. but i get that that's for the that's for the future as much as we can try to accelerate that funding. it'll have an impact starting next year, but that's not here and now and president biden will sign the bill on monday and supply chain issues are impacting a beloved aspect of our bay area economy wine making a worldwide shortage of glass bottles, believe it or not has given napa valley wineries challenges that they never could have imagined before and patience is beginning to wear very thin abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story this really hard to find a glass right now. alfaro spent all day trying to find something which used to be plentiful in the napa valley glass bottles. he needs them for his winery and his brothers olive oil company. luckily. he just scored 10 cases of small bottles at this supply store. you cleaned him out. yes, i did. so so yeah, we got lucky and this is what they have and

that's what i'm taking. oh my goodness bottles are darn issue this year napa fermentation supplies manager. ben. janes has never seen anything like it glass bottles becoming almost impossible to find due to covid-19 related supply chain issues shipments of traditional 750 milliliter wine bottles mostly manufactured in china now delayed for months. we have had an increase in phone calls from commercial wineries who normally don't buy bottles from us needing to buy bottles from us because well, they can't get bottles anywhere else new bottle inventory is sold before it even arrives and so i have a stack of people that need one glass when i get it in. it's been a challenge. to obtain this glass at visa 2. we want to reincaint helena production on a new brandy line has been halted. because the bottles are lost in transit we were told and it'll be here in august then. i'll be here in september. october here, we are november now. they're saying january.

there's 2021 chardonnay for manning in these oak barrels. all this wine needs to be bottled by may treble is the bottles may not arrive until june or july. so you just have to be flexible you the best you can but wineries have seasonal schedules and need to make room for the next harvest most will pivot like they did with wildfires and covid but it could be a very long wait for those bottles to arrive and i've heard they could be a couple years before the supply chain issue gets. fixed in the napa valley cornell barnard abc 7 news san francisco police have identified the driver accused of killing a sherman elementary school educator 70 year old susan vanarucci is charged with the vehicular. water investigators say on wednesday. she was on union street and ran a red light at franklin killing andrew ziman the 30 year old san francisco native attended sherman elementary and returned there as a paraeducator grief counselors. we're at school today as students returned to class for the first time since his death.

clara and the city of a allocated funding to food pantries in the south bay in order to help keep up with the unprecedented need during the pandemic and as cases and deaths have decreased the funding is set to stop at the end of this year, but as abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey explains the pantries worry the loss of funding. could result in food access struggles only getting worse. as a volunteer at a food pantry. it pays off to have to have to o that's because there's no time to lose we are with the start of the pandemic is a problem that was already significant prior to the pandemic simply could be magnified in our case. it was magnified three-fold loaves and fishes and martha's kitchen in san jose provided more than two million meals throughout the pandemic. they normally operate on private funding but the city of san jose and county of santa clara provided one million dollars in american rescue plan funds to each of them to help with the

pandemic burden that funding is set to expire in 2022. we don't want to get to the place where we have to start deciding who we can serve and who we can't the food need is very dire and it and it's and it's all over that's what's really amazing as this map created by team indicates the issue. is truly widespread the yellow shows all areas with low food access in the south bay. but if we add the filter of low income and low food access nearly 80 areas this highlights the importance of the grant funds to these food pantries. the reality is wild the pandemic may appear to be winding down from hospitalizations and from deaths. unfortunately from covid. our numbers are not decreasing our numbers continue to go up as much as we wish that our services weren't needed and these people didn't need help with food. they do and until things change to pull the plug in and abandon them and and leave them without food resources is just a frightening and horrible thought

ravenswood middle school are fortunate unlike others. there's no teacher shortage here. gabby gentile is one of nine at this school recruited through teach for america bay area which looks for college grads who may not have planned to be classroom teachers teaching is a very rewarding career. even if you're not going to do it for the rest of your life originally a public policy major at michigan state she is in the second year of teaching sixth grade english and social studies her passion was to focus on educational reform being in the classroom will give her more insight into what's needed a lot of the change starts within the classroom and starts with districts and then we can move it to bigger scale that early hopefully one day of ensuring that our students are cared for that. there's equity within our schools teach for america bay area. working with school districts in oakland richmond and san francisco too. we're teacher vacancies are also a challenge it also provides support in the form of teacher coach ray mays who monitors their progress to ensure success. he too was a teach for america classroom recruit having

is. it's as if each note coming from that steinway floated majestically through the air pianist garrick olson's performance demonstrated the quality of one of two holes. observatory's new bose center. the building is surrounded by other performing arts venues in the heart of hayes valley besides the two concert halls. it has a recording studio teaching spaces and housing for 422 students. the conservatory's president is david stull. it is able to house all the students from the ballet as well as from the conservatory. the cliche but that's music to jordan. avelino's ears. she's a vocal student at the conservatory and it's definitely cheaper than living in an apartment in this area and it's great because you get to build a community with the rest of the students. this concert hall is located on the 11th floor overlooking the very busy and noisy van, ness avenue.

58-56 at fairfield conquered 58 and 62 at livermore and the view from the south beach camera. looking eastward along the bay bridge. these are our forecast features. we'll see areas of dense fog developing overnight and again tomorrow morning mile to warm days lie ahead through the weekend, but we'll have a cooler pattern developing next week during the overnight hours. we'll see lots of high. out swinging through the bay area and some areas of low clouds and fog developing mainly near the coast in bayon out over in the central valley there and then we'll have a mainly clear day as the fog fog burns away by about mid-morning overnight low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s in the inland valleys. those will be our chilliest areas right around the bay shoreline and on the coast. we'll see lowe's dropping into the low 50s and then tomorrow under sunny skies in the south bay high temperatures will be in the mid. these infectious you go farther south you can even find some upper 70s on the peninsula. we'll see highs of 71 at menlo park. before redwood city half moon bay on the coast 67 degrees the high tomorrow 66 at pacifica downtown san francisco.

moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. this was the most shocking moment of a protest last night that snarled traffic onto the golden gate bridge a car and street sweeper collided hitting a third vehicle and several people as well. and today we learn more about the injuries that and we're learning more about the protests that was happening. just feet away abc 7 news reporter melanie. woodrow has the new details. the golden gate bridge district says hundreds of protesters gathered thursday a post a vaccine mandates did not have a permit to protest at the golden gate bridge unfortunately, they do not respond to our outreach and so we had to put together our safety plan with our law enforcement partners without cooperation from the event organizers that's safety plan according to the bridge district spokesperson included closing

the pedestrian walkway or sidewalk to protesters just after 5 pm protesters instead rallied near the plaza and there began to be comments being made that they were actually going to come off the sidewalks into the roadway and take over the traffic lanes the chp had already addressed that particular concern earlier in the afternoon when a driver they said was associated with the protest got out of his vehicle on the bridge with signs. they say he ignored orders to get back in his car became combative and resisted arrest to keep anyone else from entering the roadway the chp closed a lane of traffic and created a buffer with between protesters and moving vehicles officer andrew barclay says a privately owned street sweeping vehicle drifted left out of its lane colliding with a ford explorer the vehicles then hit a golden gate bridge district employee managing traffic and temporarily pinned two chp officers to other golden gate bridge district security employees were also injured one of the two was taken to the hospital last night and released the two chp officers were also taken to the hospital and released last night.

of the most damaging pollutants. could soon be going global and spencer is here with the tails, right? well, dan and alma. this is actually a way ofeeing greenhouse gases that are escaping from sights on the ground mapping where they're coming from and potentially stopping the worst releases. if you're trying to track destructive climate pollution from the skies above california first, you need to be able to see it and with technology developed at the nasa jet propulsion lab in pasadena. the images are the closest thing to environmental technicolor plumes of escaping methane gas captured during aerial surveys done in partnership with the california air resources board. so that was called a california methane survey that we conducted with nasa aircraft back in 2016 and 2017. and in that program has since expanded to track methane release riley duren and his colleagues at jpl employed a device called an airborne visible infrared imaging spectrometer. it detects signatures in the atmosphere associated with

methane that are invisible to the naked eye including major releases from so-called super emitters. it's not limited the railing gas. you see it with full mines. we see it. culture landfills wastewater treatment plants refineries recently state regulators up to the ante letting industries know they were launching a new aerial survey with the help of collaborators from arizona state and asking them to follow up from the ground and about 60% of all the plumes was something that they could they could fix right there on the spot when they went out and found it the flights were a groundbreaking turn in the fight against greenhouse gases, but the work of keeping them going challenging so researchers have now begun an equally ambitious project called carbon mapper to expand the system into space the project includes plans for a satellite launch in roughly two years. the goal is a space-based imaging system. that would track methane and co2 similar to the way nasa jpl uses satellites like sentinel 6 to

track sea surface height and ocean temperatures riley during is leading carbon mapper as a nonprofit to fund the first satellites, so idea behind carbon mappers to take this nasa develop technology and to scale it up and fly on a constellation satellites now bloomberg philanthropies has added a 25 million dollar grant to help accelerate carbon mappers work, ultimately the data it generates would be available on a new open source platform helping governments like california and nations around the world tackle greenhouse gases. so you really are going to need all these different methods and we really do live in a very exciting time. this is an exciting time and experts say the mapping is very effective because if you can spot and fix the worst super emitters, you can make a significant debt in the overall percentage of methane releases, and now let's focus on weather down here at the surface overnight. we'll see an increase in clouds high clouds and low clouds overnight lows will drop into the upper 40s in the inland valleys low 50s elsewhere than
