[ cheers and applause ] get to work on that. it would seem that there is nothing this man can ever say or do that will convince those who adore him that he is unworthy of that adoration. so there's a new book about trump. jonathan karl of abc news wrote the 900th book about donald trump. it's called "betrayal." and once again, for the 900th time in a row, trump granted a one-on-one interview for the book. even though he has repeatedly called jon karl a third raitt reporter. but if there's one thing he can't resist, it's talking about himself. so he does all these interviews. karl asked him about the attack on the capitol and what his thoughts were as an angry mob hunted for and threatened to kill his vice president. >> were you worried about him

during that siege? were you worried -- >> no. i thought he was well protected and i had heard that he was in good shape. >> you heard those chants. that was terrible. >> he could have -- well, the people were very angry. >> they said hang mike pence. >> it's common sense. how can you -- if you know a vote is fraudulent. right? how can you pass on a fraudulent vote to congress? >> jimmy: it's a betrayal of everything i've been lying about for two months. [ laughter ] you can't -- but enough about mike pence being hung. what about me being hung? you want to take a look? it's huge, don. then karl follows up with clarification on a story a conversation trump had with mike pence before the riot. >> there was a report, and excuse my language. not mine. it was in the report. that you talked to him that morning and you said you could be a patriot or you can be a [ bleep ]. did you really say that or is that a incorrect -- >> i wouldn't dispute it. >> really? >> i wouldn't dispute it. >> jimmy: what if he tried to

grab mike pence by the patriot? [ laughter ] mike pence now claims he has no problems at all with his former boss. so i guess trump was right. there's another mcnugget from the book. it says trump was almost banned from biden's inauguration. mitch mcconnell was working on a letter from the four congressional leaders. they were all going to sign it. disinviting donald from the ceremony because they didn't want him to pull a kanye or something during biden's speech. karl says trump got wind of the plan and tweeted that he wasn't going before they could tell him he couldn't. but today the commander in cheeto released a statement challenging that story. he wrote "from election day november 3rd the day i realized the presidential election was rigged i would never have agreed to go to joe biden's inauguration. the decision was mine and mine alone. the old broken down crow mitch mcconnell had nothing to do with it." still got it. [ laughter ] also lambasted his former director of strategic communications who says trump knew he lost. she says he specifically admitted that to her.

she also said she thinks mike pence will run for president against donald trump in 2024, which that would be really good. i would like that. for trump it would be like waking up and finding your dog sitting at the breakfast table reading the paper. [ laughter ] sesame street is in the news again. they describe as their first ha- asian-american muppet. her name is ji young. [ applause ] this is historic because it's the first time ernie has been touched by a woman. [ laughter ] and while it's good to see "sesame street" adding diversity, the fact that she's asian american makes you wonder, what the hell race are the other muppets? resignation. a record 4.4 million americans quit their jobs in september. and all of them are here with us tonight. [ cheers and applause ] but nobody really knows. i mean, there are a lot of reasons why. it's still not entirely clear why it is so difficult to find workers right now. especially in the food service industry. it seems like every restaurant is having trouble finding staff. i drove by a five guys today. it was only a four guy. [ laughter ] aaron rornldgers was back at wo yesterday. quarterback for the green bay packers. led his team to victory in his first game back since he had covid. 23 of 237 for 293 yards. he had great protection all night, ironically. [ laughter ] after the game a reporter asked are you concerned you might test positive again and miss a big game like the super bowl? rodgers said, "i don't like playing the what if game." but he is okay with the what if i infect a teammate and end up killing him game, not the what if game.

he did a post-game interview via zoom to avoid violating the league's mask policy for unvaccinated players indoors. >> you know, it's tough to be away from the squad. but the guys checked on me every single day. i heard from multiple guys and all the coaches. that was, again, really meaningful to me to hear from all those people and to have that support. i really appreciated that part of a difficult -- >> jimmy: and let that be a lesson to the kids out there. if you lie about something that could potentially kill somebody you work with, you can potentially get grounded for a whole week. [ laughter ] of course aaron rodgers isn't the only one who's reluctant to take the shot. a lot of americans, millions in fact, are either hesitant or just flat out against the idea. and with kids now in the mix it's particularly important that they get vaccinated too. so we have come up with something special. this is a book for kids with crazy parents. it's called "dot got a shot." and it is -- well, i'll read it to you if you like. if you have -- you have time?

lives and they're not something bad. and experts she thought might turn them around like that doc on tv who dad says is a clown. so she wrote a long e-mail to the wise dr. fauci. do you think you could come here and sit on our couchy? to explain this vaccine and hopefully soon because my parents have doubts and we're all out of spoons. [ laughter ] so fauci wrote back and said dot, my dear, if i came to your house your parents would sneer. what we've learned over here at cdc.gov is the best messenger is someone they love. that's you, little dot. they'll listen to you. only you can convince them to have a breakthrough. so dot started digging and compiling the facts from medical journals, the truth about vax. th next night at dinner she said think you'll be proud, i did my own research and here's what i found. vaccines came out in 1796, before a con man named don made us all sick. these don't contain microchips or make you magneto. they're not a dark plot by

hollywood pedos. [ laughter ] they're just like the ten other vaccines i got. they keep us alive with a few little shots. so let's get the shot. can we please go? like your parents did to stop polio? and like theirs did before them to protect them from rabies? and their parents before that to keep smallpox from babies? and dot's loving reminde, it finally got through. they turned off fox news and stopped eating horse goo. be on a raft in the pool for the whole film. but you picked the least easy thing you could do probably. >> i know. it was bananas. i don't know why. sometimes these things just find you. i'll never do it again. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: it was -- i know you did a lot of training. how much training did you like really do? no kidding around. >> no kidding around, i trained for probably 2 1/2 years. and i would go anywhere -- always four days a week, some days six days a week for four to six hours. >> jimmy: and you're in there fighting and -- >> fighting, learning all these martial art disciplines. i had to learn jiu-jitsu, taekwondo, muay thai, wrestling, judo, boxing, kickboxing, all of these, you know, elements come into play in mma. >> jimmy: which one ydid you like? which one did you gravitate toward? >> jiu-jitsu. that's the ground game. it's like wrestling when you're on the ground and you're doing all these moves. that's naturally where i -- where my talents lie.

>> jimmy: they lie where you lie. >> did you say show you -- you want me to -- [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: yeah, let's do that. i once -- mike tyson, i was shooting something with mike tyson at this boxing gym across the street and i said just hit me a couple times like for real. and he's just like uh, no, no, no. i'm not going to do that. i was like please. i was starting to annoy him. i figured maybe if i annoyed him he would do it. i just want to know what it feels like. i want to know what it feels like. and he said something to the effect of once i get started i don't stop. i was like okay, yeah, then let's not do that. [ laughter ] >> no. no. you need your teeth. >> jimmy: yeah, i need my teeth. that's a great point. i do need my teeth. i've taken so much care of them over the years. so you're in the gym four to six days a week. you're fighting with people. do you feel now you could like beat up a stranger? >> yeah. >> jimmy: yeah. and how would you approach it? if you were in a situation, like if somebody really had it coming. and you had to do something. what would be your first move? >> i would maneuver myself to get into a rear naked.

that's the easiest thing for a woman my size. >> jimmy: into a rear naked. >> a rear naked choke. >> jimmy: okay. [ laughter ] and then the people say thank you and they leave or -- [ laughter ] >> they pass out and it's lights out. but for a woman, like if you can get yourself in that position -- and most men wouldn't think you even know how to do that. so there's that element of surprise. but if i could get there -- >> jimmy: have you choked anyone out? have you felt them go unconscious? >> almost. they've tapped out. and i didn't realize -- one time i was in rehearsal and i'm doing a move on one of my partners and he was losing oxygen but i'm so into learning so i was like -- and this is good, right? and the poor guy was like -- and then i realized. and that's when i learned that that means stop. but i didn't know that yet. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: there was no discussion of that beforehand? >> not really. >> jimmy: that's when you learn -- >> learned that day. >> jimmy: do you go to these fights? do you go to mma fights?

>> oh, i love it. every saturday i'm watching. i go when i can. >> jimmy: did you love it before you started training or -- >> yeah. >> jimmy: you did. >> that's when i got this script, i was like oh my god, this came from heaven for me because it's where i was at. i've loved boxing since i was a kid. hearns and ali and hagler and leonard. like they were like my heroes as a little girl. so this was like tailor made for me in so many ways. >> jimmy: so do you think somebody knew, they noticed you at one of these fights and said oh, let's go to halle with this story? >> no. >> jimmy: no? oh. >> no. >> jimmy: just totally out of the blue? >> my agent just gave this to me. when i got this story, another actress was attached to it. this was for blake lively. >> jimmy: oh, really? >> yeah. because originally when i got the script it was written for like a very young irish catholic white girl. and i said to my agent, but i love this, i have to play this part. i mean not like this but i have to reimagine it. but i'm going to do this. and she said, well, it's blake's right now. so blake decides to give it away, pass it up, you'll be the first person you come to.

so i had to patiently wait for six months until blake decided it's not something she wanted to do. and then -- >> jimmy: and did you call blake at any time and go you -- you know what? you made the right choice. [ laughter ] that's ho intense these ladies are. they are -- fight's the next day. they're doing their like mean mugging. they're trying to intimidate each other. you know, it's a whole psychological game that's as important as the physical side. so later rose, the next day she was like i didn't even know that was you. >> jimmy: really? >> yeah. >> jimmy: well, that's a heck of a surprise, i guess, huh? i have noticed there's a difference with the female fighters. there seems to be more affection

at the end of a fight between them than there is between the male fighters. like the male fighter will come and give a little hug but like a lot of times there's real -- i mean, there seem to be real emotion between the fighters when it's over and done. >> i think for women, because we are more emotional, you know, by nature and i think being a part of a blood sport like this is not something that's normal for women. and we don't, you know, lose our female card because we become fighters. so there is a lot of emotion between women and i think there's camaraderie that's a little different than men. >> jimmy: yeah. it definitely seems that way. >> yeah. >> jimmy: so directing this movie. is this something you've been planning for a long time? >> no. >> jimmy: no. have you been watching directors and picking up -- i'm sure you just do it as a result of being on set, but you haven't specifically been studying the various directors you've worked with to -- thinking eventually i'm going to do this? >> sometimes -- you know, being

in the business now for 30 years, there's no way i can escape watching directors and understanding storytelling and how movies are put together and all the facets that bring it together. so i think my whole career you arrive at a place where you decide you know what, i think i can do that. i understand what this is. but what helped me the most was when i got my first movie, "jungle fever," spike lee sort of allowed me to -- [ cheers and applause ] thank you. he sort of allowed me to shadow. like i got to learn what all the departments did. i got to understand filmmaking because he said this is your first movie and he gave me an opportunity to like get in there and really -- >> jimmy: on your first movie he did that. >> on my first movie. yeah. >> jimmy: wow. you were a crackhead in that movie, too, right? >> crack ho. >> jimmy: crack ho. [ laughter ] i'm so sorry. >> ho. important distinction. >> jimmy: was that confusing for the people in the various departments, that you were going around and like learning about what they do?

[ cheers and applause ] so is that something that you think about, "catwoman"? is that something you were disappointed by? >> i wasn't but it seemed like the people were. you know, i really wasn't. i worked really hard to be a catwoman. i learned capoeira. i did the work. the disheartening part was i didn't direct it, i didn't produce it, nor did i write it. i was just the actress in it. but for all these years i have carried i think, you know, the weight of that film and you know, whatever success it had or didn't have, somehow it seemed like it was all my fault. but it really wasn't my fault. but i've been carrying it. so when that came up it gave me a chance to sort of like -- >> jimmy: to release that. >> to stick it back.
