extensive flooding forcing people to flee their homes. in washington, emergency officials in whatcom county say at least 500 people have been displaced, the flooding being called the worst the area has seen in 30 years. >> the water came in fast, way faster than we were expecting. so our house is in about four feet of water. >> reporter: the governor declaring an emergency for parts of washington as authorities in two counties were forced to close interstate 5 due to floods and mudslides. >> if anybody who wants to come pick us up and save us. >> reporter: a family north of seattle took to facebook to plead for help as floodwaters outside their home rose so high they reached the edge of the windows. >> it's still rising. >> reporter: they were forced to stand on top of couches to escape the rising water. >> for help and too late for any

car to get us. >> reporter: and after three hours a front end loader finally rescued the couple and their dog. across the border british columbia also inundated by record rainfall. hundreds of people including 50 children had to be rescued after a mudslide trapped them on this highway, and this dramatic video shows the city of merit, british columbia, home to 7,000 people now under water. thankfully nose residents got out early and more rain is expected across the northwest today. we'll have your forecast in just a few minutes. the other big story this morning, the trial of kyle rittenhouse. the teenager charged with fatally shooting two people during police shooting protests in wisconsin. today could very well be judgment day. this morning jury deliberations are set to begin in the kyle rittenhouse trial. on monday during six hours of closing arguments, prosecutors and the defense painted far different pictures of

rittenhouse's character and his motives. >> the defendant walks away like he's some sort of hero in a western. >> my client when this happened was 17 years old.actions e to ba a 17-year-old. >> reporter: rittenhouse's lawyer called him a kid trying to help the community at the time of the shootings in kenosha, wisconsin, last year, and he summed up the case as political. >> the district attorney's office is marching forward with this case because they need somebody to be responsible. >> reporter: rittenhouse claims he was acting in self-defense last year when he fatally shot two men. he says he was protecting property during violent protests after the police shooting of jacob blake. >> reporter: across the country rittenhouse has become a symbol, a right wing vigilante for some. the jury is seeing him through

all the evidence, the video evidence, the witness testimony and will judge him under law. he is not a symbol. he is the defendant. >> reporter: prosecutors called rittenhouse a, quote, chaos tourist highlighting the critical moment of the shooting showing rittenhouse in a crowd of protesters putting down a fire extinguisher and raising his ar-15 style rifle before shooting and killing joseph rosenbaum. >> you're not allowed to point your gun at people. you cannot claim self-defense against a danger you create. >> ladies and gentlemen, mr. rosenbaum was shot because he was chasing my client and going to kill him. >> rittenhouse faces life in prison. if he's convicted of intentional homicide the jury which has not been sequestered reconvenes at 10:00 a.m. in georgia testimony resumes at the trial of three men charged with killing ahmaud arbery after a judge rejected a request for a mistrial but the

motion came after the reverend jesse jackson attended monday's proceedings. one defense attorney asked for jackson to leave to avoid influencing the jury. outside the court reverend jackson promised to be there every day calling it a moral obligation. president biden wrapped up a three-hour virtual meeting with china's president overnight. the white house says the two leaders discussed how to manage competition responsibly without conflict. it comes amid rising tensions on human rights, trade and the future of taiwan. one official says the leaders had a healthy debate but no breakthroughs are expected. and now to a conflict in space. the u.s. is slamming russia for carrying out a missile test that created a serious amount of dangerous space debris, which could remain in orbit for decades threatening space travel even. abc's faith abubey is here with the latest. faith, good morning. this is a wild story. >> reporter: u.s. officials are saying they are furious after a russian missile test put the lives of astronauts on the international space station in

grave danger. this morning, outrage from u.s. officials after russia carried out a missile test early monday firing an anti-satellite missile into space obliterating one of its own satellites and creating a vast debris field that's now orbiting earth. >> the tests have so far generated over 1,500 pieces of trackable, orbitable debris and hundreds of thousands of pieces of smaller orbital debris that now threaten the interests of all nations. >> reporter: some of that debris coming dangerously close to the international space station which is currently carrying four u.s. astronauts. >> we were recently informed of a satellite breakup and need to have you guys start reviewing the safe haven procedure. >> reporter: the crew quickly putting on their space suits and taking shelter in one of two spacecrafts docked at the station, which can return them to earth during an emergency. it wasn't just americans taking cover. the iss is currently home to two

russian cosmonauts, the crew sheltering for more than two hours until they were finally given the green light. secretary of state antony blinken slamming the russian missile test calling it dangerous and irresponsible and adding that the debris will remain a threat for decades. just one week ago the space station was forced to fire its thrusters to dodge debris from a similar anti-satellite missile test which china carried out back in 2007. and officials also say the debris field from the russian missile test could also endanger the chinese space station, which is now home to three astronauts. trevor. >> faith abubey, thank you. the british government has raised its terrorism threat level after an explosion at a women's hospital in liverpool. a taxi pulled up outside then exploded. you see it there on your screen. the driver jumped out locking the doors and leaving the terror suspect inside. as a result police say he was killed by his homemade bomb. no word yet on a motive.

four suspects who were arrested have been released after questioning. >> incredible action by the driver there. millions more americans are now eligible for covid vaccine booster shots. it comes after officials in new york urged health care providers to give boosters to anybody over 18 who meets the timing requirements and new jersey and arkansas are also expanding booster access, even though the fda has not given the green light yet, though experts say that could be changing soon. >> the fda has done a lot of work. they spent many, many hours reviewing the data, demonstrating that the boosters are actually safe and produce good antibody responses and individual states may then take that and make further recommendations. so we expect to hear more from the fda shortly as well. >> covid cases are up more than 20% in the last to weeks and there is also growing concern about the flu season. the cdc is investigating a major outbreak at the university of michigan, more than 300 cases in the last week.

church in southern michigan. the buck got inside of the parish the same day that deer hunting season was starting. the deer eventually left. and in northern california, check out this bear in the checkout line in a 7-eleven. the bear got inside after lurking around the garbage. no one was hurt. we turn to the rising cost of everything. especially gas. within the last 24 hours, we have learned the sticker shock is only getting worse. here's abc's megan tevrizian. >> reporter: this morning, people across the country struggling to keep up with rising costs. in california, gas prices hitting a record high for the second-consecutive day. >> it's been pretty brutal. what i've been doing is trying to fill up a little bit at a time, hoping the prices will go down. i've been losing that game. >> reporter: the national average, now $3.42 a gallon. up $1.52 a year ago, because supply is not keeping up with surging demand. >> crude oil has been closing

grabbed her and held her really, really tight. in my heart, i know it protected her. >> reporter: she suffered fractures but her injuries are only on one side of her body. >> the side that he was hugging her and holding her, that's where she was protected. >> i believe it would make sense to me, if her injuries were on the one side, her other side was with her dad. and he was holding her. >> reporter: a coast guard helicopter was training in the area at the time of the crash. the crew spotted debris and air-lifted layne to the hospital where she is expected to make a full recovery. >> she is a trooper. she is alive and talking. today she stood up. she has a long road ahead of her. >> the cause of the crash is under investigation. later on "good morning america," christie perdue discusses plans for her daughter's future. turning to sport.
