>> this is abc7 news. >> boarding up and shutting down. san francisco's union square responds to the looting and vandalism. the promise from city leaders as they work to control the problem. and holiday meals for people in need. meet the man who made a very generous donation just in time for thanksgiving. good morning, everybody. it's sunday, november 21. you're watching abc7 news at 5:00 a.m. live here on abc7, hulu live and wherever you stream. before we get to those stories this morning, let's start what quick look at the weather with lisa. lisa, certainly feels like fall. lisa: yes, it's been colder and it's going to continue to bottom

out those temperatures. the numbers are in the 30's in the north bay. big ridge of high pressure over head. 53 in oakland. 38 in santa rosa. upper level winds out of the north are quite gusty allowing for the clear skies and 12 degrees cooler for you in hayward. 11 colder in livermore. and everyone is certainly colder. there's the winds. above about 1,000 feet. we're looking at 25 to 30 miles an hour out of the north. and that's keeping us so clear. a sparkling look at san francisco with 40's and 50's amount few 30's by 9:00. we're in the 60's, plenty of sunshine. we'll be in the tupper 60's to near 70 today in san jose can we get any rain in here? i'll answer that question and more. >> businesses are board up in union square following several

smash and grab robberies at upscale scores. the wooden boards are covering from broken windows after thieves hauling away an estimated $1 million worth of merchandise. we have team coverage. the city's response, and changes already in place. we begin with abc7 news reporter ryan currie. >> stories in san francisco are on high alert following the massive looting at several retail shops downtown. >> it sounds pretty crazy to me and i would hope they can get tracked down. >> this man crosses to union square every day at work. but what happened friday took him by surprise. >> i just hope that the city has a good way to something that big they'll be able to catch the people. >> social media videos shows a large group of a people stealing from the louis vuitton at union square. but that wasn't the only store hit. san francisco police say 12 stores had attempted robberies

and at least 100 suspects were involved. on saturday, union square saw a heavy police presence. many retail shops around downtown boarded up their windows and starting this week, police will block car traffic around union square. but gave no specifics here's downtown san francisco. one day remove fled incident at union square. across the street over here this nordstrom rack is board. up its windows and in the westfield mall, choosing to close two hours before they normally would on a saturday. >> i just came down here to go to the mall and the doors were all locked. >> security guards quickly turned people away. and placing barricades in place to prevent further break-ins for james gleason, he said he only needed to buy a few items but hearing about the incident makes him worried. >> kind of startled. >> he says hearing about the looting and seeing places close is disappointing. >> been a native, i'm concerned about seeing all the boards go up during the holidays.

>> brian currie, abc7 news. >> and our coverage continues with tim johns who spoke with san francisco district attorney. he is pledging to come down harden to the thieves. >> after a series of smash and grab robberies resulted in over $1 million worth of items being stolen from stores in san francisco's union square friday night, city leaders are responding. >> i mean, it was absolutely shocking. >> this man is the supervisor of distract 11. he tells me one of those arrested on friday night had been arrest # back in march for gun possession he says unless those responsible are held to account, organized crime will continue to plague the city. >> we have to ensure there's consequences for this and we have to send the message that union square is safe, that we want to have people come in and shop and that we won't tolerate this type of behavior. >> san francisco district attorney says he was outraging by friday's events and has a team working with sfpd around

the clock. >> we are exploring every single possible crash related to the conduct. we will use every tool in our tool belt. >> it's not just the immediate losses that worry city leaders they tell me the ripple effects could be potentially alarming. >> if retail frontline workers don't feel safe, if shoppers don't feel safe, stores will ultimately shut down. if stores shut down, we lose sales tax. >> that potentially could have a major impact on the city and hit not just businesses but also everyday residents. critics say he is soft on crimes like shoplifting he says no see real change then incentive has to be removed. >> we need to take a part the fencing operations that make it profitable and we need to make sure we're not limiting ourselves to what is happening alone in san francisco. >> san francisco mayor and re also expressing their outraging in response to

this string of robberies. >> we are going to be ready for anyone who tries to come in and victimize the people and the businesses of our city. >> they say changes will be made. we'll hear from both in our next half-hour on abc7 news. so stick around for that. meantime in the east bay, there's a large presence in walnut creek where police say 80 looters targeted nordstrom last night amount typically busy broadway plaza now became a major crime scene. crime scene tape there going up. a manager at a nearby restaurant says stunned customers just watched as the thieves grabbed merchandise, loaded it in waiting cars and drove off. >> probably saw 50 toll 80 people in like ski masks, crowbars, a bunch of weapons looting the nordstrom right here. usually, there's all these cars parked. i thought they were going to start beating cars. i had to start lock the front door, lock the back door. >> 80 people. it's incredible.

this b.m.w. convertible was stopped by police, believed to potentially be somehow connected to the mayhem. police say they have arrested three people. all right. there are new developments in a police involved shooting in oakland. abc7 has learned the suspect involved in this incident has died. you can hear the gunfire from police radio dispatch audio. >> car fire. car fire! >> this all began when police stay a victim was carjacked in oakland yesterday afternoon. officers managed to local that car, chasing it all around town at one point, the suspect hopped on interstate 580 and as you can see from this caltrans freeway camera, officers then described a violent chase that ensued with the suspect opening fire at officers on 49th street and clark streets. >> any injuries? >> negative. you saw in the -- he shot in the air and back at officers. at least three times.

it's ramming vehicles now. >> it rammed in multiple vehicles. >> the chase ended in oakland's rock ridge district. police shot the carjacking suspect after officers say he started ramming political cars no officers were hurt. the a's are pushing forward with potential move to las vegas. multiple reports say the team has put in an offer buy a lot of land to make a new ballpark. it is not clear where the stadium will be built but the price tag is estimated at about $1 billion. oakland is not out of the picture yet the city just got money to make improvements to jack london square which is where the a's want to put a new waterfront ballpark. the council is expected to take a final vote early next year. that's bay area continues to experience drought, more residents could soon be expected to cut their water use the utilities commission will meet tuesday to possibly declare a water shortage emergency.

businesses and residents could be asked to reduce water use by 5%. the reduction will -- reductions will not be end forced and those who comply will not be punished it will enact a surcharge on 5% on water bills starting april 1 of next year. today, hundreds of families will get a turkey for their thanksgiving meal thanks in part to the lay hoe native e-40 he donated $12,000 turkeys and gift cards to the car club feels giveaway. this is the fourth turkey drive for the club. they will be handing out hot meals today the giveaway is on tennessee street at 11:00 this morning. lisa, let's get a check outside. lisa: nice and clear outside. look at how brilliant that looks from our camera. 51 degrees in san francisco. sorry, i'm choking. today, temperatures will come up to above average readings. we'll talk about mid 60's even

passenger going through security accidentally fired a gun. it was a mad dash as you can see to get out of the terminal yesterday after the gunshot rang out. people thought it was a mass shooting. the t.s.a. says the agent was searching a bag, the person lunged and grabbed the weapon and it went off. three people were hurt in the chaos. the passenger ran out of the terminal and police say they do know who he is. >> we have identified the suspect as ken wells, 42 years old. we have taken out warrants for carrying a concealed weapon in a commercial airport, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. liz: wells faces a disorderly conduct charge. hopefully, most people are safe. we'll keep those three people in mind. americans are expected to spend more money for their thanksgiving dinners this year

the american farm bureau federation released the yearly survey and it is showing that some prices you may be are not going to want to see. but there are still ways to save and john explains. >> get ready to fork out a little more money for your thanksgiving feast. the american farm bureau federation says it will be 13 shh% more base on their informal survey. it's hard to point to any one thing but certainly, the underlying factor for most of those elements is the global pandemic. >> the biggest reason for the 2021 increase? the turkey itself. the a.f.b. which bases its annual findings on nationwide pricing data says bird costs are up about 24% higher this year. one important caveat? the survey was carried out before grocery stores started advertising promotional price which is came out later this year. >> we've seen price fluctuations anywhere from 88 cents per pound up to $1.50 per pound.

there's a lot of variation in the retail space and i think that's driving a lot of those concerns about shortages when people are out shopping. >> one way to save a little money this thanksgiving is to be a picky shopper. >> make sure that as you're spending your dollars that you're looking at not just maybe going to the same grocery store for all items of the thanksgiving dinner but shop around a little bit. because there's certainly deals to be had. but you might not find the same deal on every product in the same store. >> i'm john lawrence reporting. liz: one man's effort to build a better bay area means thousands will have a better meal. yesterday, he dropped 400 turkeys at st. thoennes -- athens. they serve about 400 pounds on thanksgiving. it is their biggest meal service of the year and smith's donation help make it possible. >> this donation is really important to st. athens.

our -- thoennes -- anthony's. our food cost has riven prior to the pandemic and that's for a variety of reasons. we have more people coming to us for our services. food costs are higher and there's a shortage in donated food for us. and so a donation like this allows us to continue serving meals to all the people who turn to us in need. liz: st. anthony's viad in san francisco 40 years ago with nothing in his pocket. he held his first turkey drive in 2012. st. thoennes is accepting donation through its website. all right. and lisa, it is going to be dry for thanksgiving which is nice for people who want to ming and mix outside. lisa: yes, it's going. be really nice we're joining the above-average temperatures today and tomorrow. but things will cool down to near seasonal averages but wow is it nice yesterday. if you got a chance to get in

the sun. san francisco itself was only 59 degrees. but we did see temperatures as much as five to eight degrees above average. and once again today, it's going to be mild to warm depending on where you are. there's a look at the state of california where it is quiet this morning. and looking at temperatures from the tupper 40's with clear sky in caster valley, 46 in union city. 56 in berkeley. and north by a, this is where -- north bay, this is where temperatures are in the mid 30's. 53 across the bay in oakland. so we are anywhere from a degree to about 13 degrees colder this morning in san jose. you certainly probably feel th that. look at 15 degrees colder. so this has to do with the clear sky and because of the winds are allowing to push the fog out of here. we take a look above 1,000 feet and it's been pretty gusty.

it's been up to 40 miles an hour in mt. st. hello lena. you can see mt. tam at 30 miles an hour. beautiful view here with that sun setting before 5:00. so certainly the short day out there. a lot to enjoy though weather-wise with temperatures above average but can we get some rain? we sneed the rainfall and -- need the rainfall and snow the mountains. sunny and mild this afternoon. it's going to be dry for thanksgiving. looks dry through the end of the month. but there are signs of december looking a little bit more active. of course that is so far away as we get into monday, a little change. upper 60's in oakland. 70 in hayward. and temperatures are in the low 60's for sausalito. 63 in oakland. and by the time we get to december, numbers begin to recover a little bit.

they'll be above average. let's look at the pier in santa cruz. temperatures are going to be well into the 60's. you may want to head to the coast. water temperature just in the upper 50's. but 65 ocean beach. stinson at 68. 72 in santa cruz. so thanksgiving plans, starting up very cool with 30's and 40's and partly cloudy with temperatures from the upper 60's, upper 50's to lower 60's. the accuweather seven-day forecast, a string of sunny and dry days. chilly mornings. the mildest afternoons will be today and tomorrow, liz. so even across the u.s., traveling, no huge storms to speak of. so should be pretty easygoing. but lots of people to accompany you. liz: absolutely. thank you, lisa just ahead, big bucks to help build a better bay area. how millions of dollars in prize

harm individuals, you will be held accountable. liz: a message from san francisco mayor to those responsible for vandalism and looting at union square. community leaders are promising to take action. good morning again, everyone. thanks for joining us here on abc news. we're going to start this half-hour what look at the weather before we get back into that looting and vandalism this weekend. so let's get back to lisa. lisa: liz, good morning to you. we're starting out with some interesting temperatures. it's clear but look at the numbers in santa clara. 39 there 39 in campbell. closer to the coast, it is 57. half-moon bay what northeast wind gusting to about 17 miles an hour. some upper 30's in nevada but bo daga by a is at ---day is at 53. so we're basically a lot cooler except if you're right on the coast, nine to 12 degrees cooler. from concord to hayward, and looking at the winds, they are pretty gusty in the upper

elevations. and this matters because it is blowing the fog out of here and allowing for those warmer numbers along the coast by the afternoon. it's going to be above average again. 60's. plenty of sunshine. upper 60's and 70's. we'll talk about when we see an end to this unseasonably warm pattern coming up. liz? liz: all right. lisa, thanks. the strong reaction front city leaders after several luxury brand stores were robbed around san francisco's union square. eight people were arrested. abc7 news reporter tell us the mayor and the police chief are condemning the crimes and promising action. >> last night what we saw was horrible. >> london breed reacting to the vandalism. the louis vuitton store ransacked and emptied out by a group of thieves. the store is now temporarily closed. >> and the message here today is

if you come to our city to commit those level of crimes or to come and to vandalize or to harm individuals, you will be held accountable. >> other stores were also robbed. fendi and burberry had its but people on patrol nearby may have stopped thieves from entering. >> there's no doubt in my mind that this was not unplanned. their plan was to overwhelm us. their plan was hoping that we wouldn't be here but we were. >> [beep]. >> this video going viral on social media showing police officers bashing the boyfriends a mustang and pulling a possible suspect out of the car. chief scott defending his officer's actions. >> the officers that made the arrest on that mustang were confronting an armed individual. they took him in the custody safely. >> scott says multiple arrests were made. the brazen crime sparking reaction and fear around the

city's number one shopping destination. >> the city is not the same and just the lifestyle that it's going around here, it's not good for families. >> we can't have that -- we cannot tolerate this kind of conduct at all. i mean, not at all. >> the union square realigns say the crimes are unacceptable, especially a week before black friday and the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. >> it's really important that we recognize that this impacts all of us and the last thing that we want is for people not to enjoy their city. they can. >> official say more officials will be added around the square with new traffic control measures added to limit cars in the area. >> but there will be traffic delays because we can't control allow people to freely flow? and out of this city, commit these acts and get away with it. >> in san francisco, cornel bernard, abc7 news. liz: candidates are throwing their hat into the ring for a

once-in-a-generation chance to represent the peninsula in congress. david ken the pass seen in daily city to formerly announce his candidacy to replace retired congresswoman jackie spear. he will build bridges in a politically divided washington. >> the way washington works is no different than the board of supervisors or city council. you've got to work with your colleagues. people may have different viewpoints but that didn't mean that you don't talk to them. you engage them, you build those relationships. liz: congresswoman spear will not seek re-election and ending four decades of politics. as more people return to work in person, data shows san francisco is lagging in the number of people in the office. according to security company castle, nearly 27% of offices in

the city were occupied last week. the company tracks key fob, and app access to buildings. san francisco is behind other areas in the country. austin and houston have about half of their buildings occupied. getting into a university of california school will not require any admissions test. earlier the year, the system voted to drop s.a.t. and s.a.t. scores. officials discuss whether to use any other tests but last week, they confirmed no tests are required when applying as an undergraduate. a lawsuit earlier this year argued low-income students of school were disadvantaged. the u.c. says not having testing requirement is one reason why it admitted its most diverse class for the fall. >> we're here every saturday, sunday cleaning up and we were here on sundays dealing with homeless sites but we come back the next day, it's a mess.

liz: it's a quality of life problem that is long plagued the city and the streets of oakland from october 1 of last year to september 30 of this year, oakland public works says it cleaned up more than 23,000 tons of illegal durening. -- dumping. the city is launching a new program to try and keep up with the demand to help build a better bay area. >> i have never seen oakland at this level when it comes to the plastic. >> tons and tons of garbage on the streets of oakland. a problem that has only grown during an ongoing pandemic. >> it has overtaken our streets and our communities and as much as we have work to invest this year, we know there is still more that needs to be done and having more options for our community is critical. >> now, all oakland residents can schedule no charge drop-off appointments with waste management in alameda county. apartment tenants can get free

curbside bulky pickup service that wasn't available before. >> we're drawing a line in the sand. every resident in the city of oakland will have the opportunity to dispose of their bulky item collections in various ways. there are teams of people that go out and pick up garbage in oakland on a daily basis but as soon as they pick it up, it's back. >> people come and do their illegal dumping late at night. usually after 11:00, 12 midnight. >> this councilman believes while most residents want to he do right thing, the bigger challenge is those who profit from illegal dumping. >> we have no enforcement in oakland. i know who the illegal dumbers are, but oakland needs to be more serious about end forcing the laws and the rules that we have. >> next month, the city council committee will consider installing more cameras in known hot spots. liz: ok, so still ahead on abc7,

download and looks back at the historic event. members of our abc7 family volunteered their time to make sure bay area residents have everything they need. they lent a home sorting and backing -- that looks like tom, our general manager, bagging meal at the food bank yesterday morning these meals were prepped for volunteer drivers to distribute to residents that are ill or immunocompromise who cannot make it to the food banks. our colleagues gave their time in support of our parent company, disney's volunteers initiative to give back to the community. in the south bay, second harvest spent the day getting ready for thanksgiving providing this video of a very busy day of volunteers putting together boxes for families in need this year the food bank of san jose says donations are down so it could use donations of food or money $50 can provide up to 100

50 degrees in cupertino. some areas have the east wind allowing for temperatures to be warmer. otherwise, no winds at all. numbers have dropped into the 30's in nevada. 51 downtown. 57 in bodega bay. good 20-degree spread depending on what kind of wind direction you have or what kind of sheltered area you're. in 11 to 12 degrees colder from livermore to hayward and nevada. cold but to fog. here's the wind direction. north-northeast. pretty gusty in the upper elevations and that is allowing for some of the warming in those areas that it's in the 50 drive readings but the most significant part of this wind is the lack of fog that we're dealing with this morning so much you can see the direction there. otherwise, at the surface, not dealing with wind. and we're looking at a clear start. a warm-up that will allow temperatures anywhere from seven to eight, maybe nine degrees above average so much clear and chilly, sunny and mild this afternoon. dry for thanksgiving.

and we're looking at dry weather unfortunately into the weekend after thanksgiving as well. look at all the 70's today. from cupertino to san jose. morgan hill, 72. on the peninsula, a lot of sunshine. 69 redwood city. half moon bay, in the 60's of the a pleasant mild afternoon at the shoreline here. downtown, four degrees above average for you at 66. up in the north bay, the yellows indicate some of the warmer number from sonoma to santa rosa at 70 today. mid 60's by the water. and you head over to san leandro, 68. so really a pleasant afternoon here. numbers should be about four to five degrees cooler from this time of the year and over into our inland valleys, 66 today. and making plans for thanksgiving, it will be dry. but wednesday morning, some really cold temperatures. and we'll see numbers in the 30's and 40's by thursday morning as well. 7:00.

and then by 10:00, lots of 50's. maybe some clouds around. but by the afternoon, on the mild side. near seasonal with upper 50's to low 60's for thanksgiving day. mildest reading is today and tomorrow. the chilly start. 60's in the afternoon. by tuesday, cooler. and we'll see more fog develop. but really other than that, we are just monitoring some minor ups and downs in temperatures right on through the workweek and into next weekend. keeping us dry and thank goodness, we have the rain in october and november, liz, because, of course, if not, those offshore winds would be indicating some fire danger. but not the case can. liz: that is some really good news. yeah. next, it's a big night for the music industry. why american music award host cardi b says she's excited for the big event.
