59 in half moon bay. check out the numbers in the north bay. 30's, so we've got that offshore wind. cooling everyone else off, 42 in livermore, 46 in concorde. everyone experiencing the chill down for the most are and win, unless you are in the upper elevations, you are really not noticing them bringing in a arm afternoon again. we are mild, above average today. 65 noontime. a few 70's around the bay area today. another clear and cool night tonight. we will see a shift in this pattern. luz: businesses are boardings a and san francisco's union square this morning following several smash and grab robberies in upscale stores friday night. wooden boards are covering broken windows after groups smashed their way inside, holding away an estimated $1 million of merchandise.

we have team coverage on this developing story and the violent crime spree and changes already in place. we begin with ryan curry. ryan: stores in san francisco on high alert following the massive looting in several retail shops downtown. >> i would hope that they could get tracked down. ryan: he knew petty theft is common in the city, but what happened friday took him by surprise. >> i just hope that the city has a good way to be able to get those people. >> social media shows a large group of people stealing from the louis vuitton in unions where, but that was not the only store hit. 12 stores have attempted robberies and at least 100 suspects were involved. on saturday, union square saw a heavy police presence. many retail shops around downtown boarded up windows and starting this week, police will block car traffic around union

square but gave no specifics. here is downtown san francisco one day removed from the incident. across the street over here, this nordstrom rack is boarding up its windows. in the westfield mall, choosing to close two hours before they normally would on a saturday. >> i came down here to go to the mall and i guess the doors are all locked. >> security guards quickly started turning people away and placing barricades in place to prevent further break-ins. for james gleason, he said he only needed to buy a few items, but hearing about the incident makes him worried. >> i'm kind of startled. i tried to going on market street and they guess there was a bunch of police over there. >> he says seeing places closed is disappointing. >> i'm concerned about seeing the boards go up near the holidays. luz: our coverage tim johns who spoke with san francisco district attorney jason houdini -- ja --

>> after a series of robberies resulted in over $1 million of items stolen friday night, city leaders are responding. >> i mean, it was absolutely shocking. tells me one of those arrested friday night had also been arrested back in possession of a gun. he says unless those responsible are held to account, and has cry will continue to plague the city. >> we have to ensure there's consequences for this and we have to send the message that union square is safe, that we want to have people coming into shop and that we won't tolerate this kind of behavior. >> the district attorney says he was outraged. >> we are exploring every single possible criminal charge related to the conduct. we will use every tool in our toolbelt. >> but it is not just the immediate losses that worry city

leaders. the ripple effects could also be potentially alarming retail front-line workers don't feelesy shut down. if stores shut down, we lose sales tax. >> that potentially could have a major impact on the city and hit not just businesses, but also everyday residents. while critics say he is soft on crimes like shoplifting, he says in order to see real change, the incentive has to be removed. >> we need to go to the root of the problem, we need to take apart the operations that make it profitable and we need to make sure we are not limiting ourselves to what happens in san francisco. luz: san francisco's mayor and police chief are also expressing their outrage in response to the string of robberies. >> we are going to be ready for anyone who tries to come in and demise the people and the businesses of our city. >> they say changes will be made. we will hear from both of them

in the next half hour on abc 7 news, so stick with us for that. meantime, there is a large police presence in walnut creek where police say 80 looters targeted nordstrom. atypically busy broadway plaza became a major crime scene. in manager at a nearby restaurant says stunned customers just watch as the thieves grab merchandise, loaded in cars, and drove off. >> probably saw 50 to 80 people in ski masks, crowbars, they were looting of the nordstrom right here. usually it is really busy. i thought maybe they were going to start beating cars. i had to lock the front door, locked the back door. >> this bmw convertible was stopped. police say they have arrested three people. there are new developments this morning in a police-involved

shooting in oakland. abc 7 has learned the suspect involved in the incident has died. you could hear the gunfire from police radio dispatch audio. >> shots fired, shots fired. >> this all began when a victim was carjacked in oakland yesterday afternoon. officers managed to locate that car, chasing all around town. at one point, the suspect cop on interstate 580 as you can see from this caltrans freeway camera. officers described a violent chase with the suspect opening fire at officers on 49th street in street. >> back at officers at least three times. it is ramming vehicles down. >> the chase ended in the lockridge -- rockridge district. police shot the suspect after he started ranting patrol cars. no officers were hurt.

the a's are pushing forward with a potential move to las vegas. multiple reports say the team is put an offer to buy a plot of land that could be turned into a new ballpark. it is still not clear where the stadium would be dealt but the price tag is estimated at about $1 billion. oakland is not yet out of the picture. the city just got money to make improvements to jack london square which is where the a's want to put a new waterfront ballpark. the city council is expected to take a final vote on the stadium early next year. as the bay area continues to experience drought, more residents could soon be asked to cut their water use. the public utilities commission will meet tuesday to possibly declare a water shortage emergency. businesses and residents could be asked to reduce water use by 5%. the reductions will not be enforced and those who do not comply will not be punished. the emergency declaration would enact a surcharge of up to 5% on water bills that would start april 1 of next year.

people who have gotten boosters in the county. >> i just thought it was a wise thing to do. trying to be careful but it could not possibly hurt. christine:christine: the decision comes as at least 30 states are seeing a rise in cases of at least 10% over the past two weeks. as cases continue to rise, so that the death toll. more than 770,000 american lives lost. but latest data from the cdc and johns hopkins show more people have died from the virus this year than in 2020. fauci will talk about booster shots, concerns over rising cases and tips for safe holiday gatherings. you can watch the full interview with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 this morning on abc 7. there was panic at the atlanta airport this weekend after a passenger going through security accidentally fired a gun.

you can see in this video a dash to get out of the terminal after the gun shot rang out. the tsa says a person lunged and grabbed the weapon and it went off. three people were hurt in the chaos. the passenger ran out of the terminal and police do say they know who it is. >> we have identified the suspect as kenny wells, 42 years old. we have taken out warrens for carrying concealed weapon at a commercial airport, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. luz: wells also faces a disorderly conduct charge. americans are expected to spend more money for the thanksgiving dinner this year. the american farm bureau federation released the results of the yearly survey and it is showing that some prices are so high you maybe aren't even going to want to see. the good news is that there are some ways to save. reporter john lorinc explains.

>> get ready to fork out a little more money for your thanksgiving feast. the american farm bureau federation says it will be 14% more based on their in will survey. >> -- informal survey. >> it is really hard to point to any one thing but certainly the underlying factor for most of those elements is the global pandemic. john: the biggest reason for the increase, the turkey itself. the afb, which bases its annual findings on nationwide pricing data says bird costs are up about 24% higher this year. one important caveat, the survey was carried out before grocery stores started advertising promotional prices which came out later this year. >> we've seen price fluctuations anywhere from $.88 per pound all the way up to $1.50 per pound. certainly, there's a lot of variation that we are seeing in the retail space and i think that is driving a lot of those concerns about shortages when people are out shopping. >> one way to save a little

money this thanksgiving is to be a picky shopper. >> make sure that as you are spending your dollars, you are looking at not just going to the same grocery store for all items of thanksgiving dinner, but shop around a little bit because there are certainly deals to be had. but you might not find the same deal on every product in the same store. luz: will get a holiday meal. yesterday, pierre smith dropped off nearly 400 turkeys at san francisco's foundation. saint anthony's says they serve about 2400 pounds of turkey on thanksgiving. it is their biggest meal service of the year and the donation helps make it possible. >> this donation is really important to saint anthony's. our food costs have risen 40% since prior to the pandemic and that is for a variety of reasons. first of all, we have more people coming to us for our services. food costs are higher and there

is a shortage in donated food for us. a donation like this allows us to continue serving meals to all the people who turn to us in need. luz: saint anthony's says smitt arrived four decades ago with nothing in his pockets. he identifies with the foundation guests and wants to extend the help he received two others. he held his first turkey drive in 2012. saint anthony's is expecting donations -- accepting donations on its website if you're able to help. incredible. 400 turkeys, that is awesome. that is going to help so many people. lisa: that is good news, good for him. we have pretty nice weather but we have had such a stretch already since the rain in october and november and unfortunately, we are getting into a dry spell here from the weekend into the last week of the week. you can see the clear sky carved out over california and it has been windy. the mountains of southern california have seen some gusting over 50 miles per hour.

miles per hour. we are just the recipients of a mild afternoon, not even breezy around here as we are looking at temperatures warming through the mid to upper 60's today that is about 5-8 degrees above average, a chilly night tonight and a shift in the pattern as we begin the work week. thanksgiving, that is looking drive. we'll see if we see any rain and talk about that in the future coming up. right now from city leaders after several luxury brand stores were involved in vandalize the cornell barnard tells us the mayor and the police chief are condemning the crimes and promising action. >> last night what we saw was horrible. >> san francisco mayor london breed reacting to friday's chaos. luxury brand stores vandalized and looted around 8:00 p.m.

the louis vuitton store, ransacked and emptied out. the store is now temporarily closed. >> and the message here today is if you come to our city to commit those level of crimes or to command to vandalize or to harm individuals, you will be held accountable. >> other stores were also the. police on patrol nearby may have stopped the from entering. >> there's no doubt in my mind that this was not unplanned. the plan was to overwhelm us, the plan was hoping that we wouldn't be here, but we were. >> this video now going viral on social media showing police officers bashing the windows of a mustang and pulling a possible suspect out of the car. chief scott defending officers actions. >> the officers that made the arrest on that mustang were confronting an armed. they took into custody safely.

>> scott has multiple arrests were made. the brazen crimes sparking reaction and fear around the city's number one shopping destination. >> the city is not the same. just the lifestyle going around here. >> we can have that. we cannot tolerate this kind of conduct at all in this city. i mean, not at all. >> the union square alliance is the crimes are unacceptable, especially less than a week before black friday and the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. >> it's really important that we recognize that this impacts all of us and the last thing that we want is for people not to feel like they can enjoy their city. they can. >> officials say more police will soon be added around the square, providing more security for visitors with new traffic control measures added to limit cars in the area. >> but there will be traffic delays because we can't continue to allow people to freely flow in and out of the city, commit these acts, and get away with.

>> a once in a generation chance to represent the peninsula in congress. san mateo county board of supervisors president stood in front of the hospital where he was born to formally announce his candidacy to replace retiring chronic fruman jackie speier. he told supporters he will build bridges to a politically divided washington. >> the way washington works is no different than the board of supervisors or a city counselor. you have got to work with your colleagues and people may have different viewpoints. that doesn't mean you don't talk to them. you talk to them, you engage them, you build those relationships. luz: congresswoman spear announced last week that she will not be seeking reelection, ending nearly four decades in politics. her term ends next year. as more people returned to person, data shows san francisco is lagging in the number of

people in the office. nearly 27% of offices in the city were occupied. the company tracks key card and catholic presence access to buildings. san francisco is behind most other major metropolitan areas in the country. austin and houston, for instance, have about half of the buildings occupied. getting into a university of california school will not require any admissions test. earlier this year, the system voted to drop sat and act scores. officials discussed whether to use any other test but last week they confirmed that no tests are required when applying as an undergrad. a lawsuit earlier this week argue that low-income students of color and those with disabilities were disadvantaged without heavy test prep. not having a test requirement is one reason why uc admitted the most diverse class for this fall. >> we are here every saturday and sunday cleaning up, and we

were here on sundays dealing with all of this. >> illegal dumping is the quality-of-life problem that has long plagued the streets of oakland. any one year span from october 1 of last year to september 30 of this year, oakland public works says it has cleaned up more than 23,000 tons of illegal dumping. as laura anthony tells us, the city is launching a new program to try to keep up with the demand to help build a better bay area. >> i have never seen oakland at this level when it comes to the blight. >> tons and tons of garbage almost everywhere you look on the streets of oakland. >> it has overtaken our street and our communities inasmuch as we have worked to invest this year, we know that there is still more that needs to be done and having more options for our community is critical. >> now, all oakland residents can schedule no charge drop-off

appointments with waste management of alameda county. apartment tenants can also get free curbside pickup service that wasn't available before. >> we are drawing a line in the sand. every resident in the city of oakland will have an opportunity to dispose of their bulky item collections in various ways. >> as it is now, there are teams of people that go and pick up garbage in oakland almost on a daily basis, but the big issue is almost as soon as they pick it up, it is back. >> people come and do illegal dumping late at night, usually after 11:00, midnight. >> while most residents want to do the right thing, the bigger challenge is those who profit from illegal dumping. >> we have no enforcement in oakland. if i know who the legal dumpers are, oakland needs to be more serious about enforcing the laws and the rules that we have. >> next month, the city council committee will consider
