live and wherever you streesm we're working every day to build a better bay area. the slew of organize red tail theft we witnessed in san francisco and other cities over the weekend isn't part of it. since we covered the story yesterday here's what's news tine. >> the p.d. is increasing patrols on streets that run near shop airg yas. they announced charges, felony charges, against those arrested for stealing from union square friday. >> san francisco's police chief is asking the city to revise rules about accessing surveillance cameras so police can see footage in real tame -- real time not just after the fact. and retail workers are opening up about the fear and dread they a face every day we start with their stories because it makes you realize what a big deal these crimes are on a human level. >> in retail, working the holidays yucially means working extra hours for higher pay. today i spoke to several retail

workers who are dreading going to work this year. they are affray atrade and have gotten to the point of expecting to see mobs of people walking into their stores stealing merchandise. many said friday's ince dernt was not a surprise. nearly 12 stores were hit at the same time on friday night on union square. now the aftermath is not only physical but mental. >> heightened security. of course we want to keep all of our patrons and staff safe. and there are things we have to do now we don't really want to. >> went to see firsthand the environment retch tail workers are stepping into on a regular tuesday. store fronts are boarded up. private security workers guard the entrance of many stores. many luxury brands are locking their doors. once a worker or security guard sees you, then you're allowed inside. >> we're doing what we can at our store front to make sure that we know who is coming into our stores. >> v.p. of operations for gund said they were lucky not to get

hit but he's concerned for hi staff's safety. >> it's time to take action. time to stop the news conferences. time to start holding people accountable so that these businesses that are trying to survive can once again flourish. >> a tai after the union square organized scheffts, multiple stores at westfield mall were also hit. >> what do you do in your store to stay safe? >> right now i'm locking one door just opening one door. >> shantae is always on high alert. same for her neighbors next door, kiana and regina, at the finish line store. are you scared to come to work? >> i do get scared but you've got to make money somehow. >> they've seen the increase in theft. >> victory's secret is a main target, all the shoe store, nordstrom, bloomingdale's. anything they can get. if the see the store a little empty, not that many associates they'll try to take it. >> people have pulled out knives and threatened us.

>> they're told to stand back but they're concern is no longer this is the the shoes. now it's their lives. >> i know shoe polish in l.a. an employee got shot trying to grab shoes a person was stealing. of course it's scary. like you know, you jest never know. >> i spoke to several retail workers in the union square area who were not allowed to speak on camera but who said friday's incident was traumatizing and some of these companies are now providing mental health resources for them. in the newsroom, luz pena, abc 7 news. >> we hear a lot of people saying we need to hold criminals accountable. the san francisco district attorney took a step in that direction, announcing charges against a handful of suspects arrested for stealing from stores last friday. melanie wood row joins us live with the announce. melanie. >> absolutely. you can see and hear these protesters that are here outside of the district attorney's

office. they've been calling for jasonan boudin's recall too announce felony charges against people arrested in connection with burglaries in san francisco. one of those at the louis vuitton in union square. four individuals charged in connection with the louis vuitton incident. charges include looting, grand theft. also charged in connection with the incidents, an individual who was a passenger in a car from union square. that individual charged with possessing a firearm with a prior felony. in addition to the union square incident, there were also additional burglaries in the city this weekend. one of those at a cannabis dispensary. three individuals charged in connection with that one. and another burglary at a walgreen's, one individual charged in connection with that

burglary. reporters asked the district attorney whether or not these nine individuals will stay in custody and whether or not these charges could be reduced or dropped entirely, this was his answer. >> ultimately, in every single case, including these, it is up to the judges and superior court of san francisco whether somebody stays in custody pending trial or whether they're released. similarly it's the decision of the judges of the superior court of san francisco to decide what sentence should be imposed including whether charges filed as felonies are subsequently reduced. my office has some discretion in that matter and judge have discretion as well. >> right now you're looking at video of reporters and photographers having to quickly move inside for this press conference which initially had been scheduled to take place outside but again those protesters showed up and we were quickly moved inside.

the district attorney is saying these individuals will be arraigned tomorrow. live in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> thank you. >> you still hear the po test behind melanie, ongoing for quite some time now. joining us now, abc 7 insider phil mateer. you were with us yesterday to talk about these crimes which were so shocking, something we've covered a lot over the years. let's talk about first steps. what are some solutions from your perspective? >> first thing we're seeing right now a change in tune from the district attorney, chesa boudin. he was elected as were others on the idea of judicial reform. the idea that if it's not a violent crime you shouldn't be incarcerated, you should be allowed to stay until your court date and even then to not necessarily go to jail but get into rehab programs. he's now saying we need to send a strong message and lock them up. he's not alone. there was a conference call today among district attorneys

throughout northern california as far as san joaquin county and up here where they decided to say we need to speak in a unified voice and unified charging, that this has to stop. another thing that happened yesterday was a conference call between 150 law ep forcement, f.b.i., sheriffs, police chiefs, from san francisco down to monterrey, where they're having these types of swarm robberies. it's not just san francisco. this is happening around. >> which is why that regional approach is probably very smart. >> it's smart on a couple of things. one you want to send a unify message. but also these bands are moving from counti to county. the c.h.p. when they're patrolling shopping malls, that is not just to patrol shopping malls, but to get more people on freeway, you get word that this is happening, try to prevent it. block an exit. swarm the area yourself. one of the key steps is if you're trying to build a better bay area is to stop these things before they get started to. get the intelligence that it's

happening and to react quickly. >> on that subject of c.h.p., paying more attention to exits, freeway exits close to some of these shopping areas because one of the things that make it so attractive for thieves is they can get on the highway and out of there fast. >> that's part of the attraction of it. we have box scores close to the freeways and they get hit. it's a combination of this things. one is prevention. in walnut springs they're upping police presence, possibly put in traffic barriers, working in concert with other cities around there for a unified front as well to stay on top of this. to be aware of it. it's the shopping season. black friday. is that going to replicate? first thing is try to prevent it. second, send a message that if you're caught you'll be charged. >> one of the things i know they want to do, phil is to understand how these criminals organize and communicate. i know -- >> it's right there. it's right there on your cell phone.

>> is it social media? >> yes. that's what happens. same thing, you can get on a cell phone, and you can -- it's saturday night, you can start sending out messages and you can get into a network where the same ones that let's say put 500 cars together far sideshow and spin the tires and shoot off the guns. >> meet at union square. >> let's hit union square. it's the same thing like that. it happens so quickly. it can happen within an hour or two. as a matter of fact, one of the reasons why there were arrests made is because the cops were on alert for possible social networking saying that there might be rae action to the kenosha verdict, let's have a police presence out there. >> interesting. because it could be expanding far beyond the initial plan just by social media, more people show up at the last minute. >> exactly. >> almost like a house party or something. >> you've got to try to keep it from happening. >> phil, always great. remember, if you want to help build a better bay area go to

action to try to lower gas prices, ordering the release of 50 million barrels of oil from america's strategic reserve to bring down energy costs. >> i've worked hard the past few weeks in calls and meetings with foreign leaders, policymakers to putting to the building blocks for today's global announcement. while our combined action will not solve the problem of high gas prices overnight it will make a difference. >> today's announcement follows president biden's call last week for the federal trade commission to look into whether illegal conduct is driving up prices. in recent week, the wholesale price of oil has dropped to 10% but the price at the pump has not. the president said that's unacceptable. prices won't be coming down overnight. drivers like these heading over the golden gate bridge right now won't be getting any immediate relief. californians hope they come soon. right now we're paying $4.70 a gallon, for regular unleaded. this is an all-time record in the state. prices are higher in the bay

the holiday parade crash in wisconsin to 6. the suspect made his first court appearance today in the milwaukee suburb of waukesha. he try kried when he heard about the sixth death. he'd been arrested and released from jail five days prior, accused of trying to run over the mother of his child. the judge set bail at $5 million. >> the nature of this offense is shocking. the detail i was not expecting here today, i have not seen anything like this in my very long career. >> more than 60 people were hurt in sunday's incident. police did try to stop the s.u.v. at one point. a detective stepped in front of the s.u.v. and pounded on the hood but the s.u.v. sped around him. a surveillance camera captured the moment a house exploded in flint, michigan, killing at least two people including a 4-year-old girl. two other people were hurt and
