just a little bit. first, though, a lot to cover this morning including that alarming new covid variant discovered in south africa. it's now been detected in other countries and new travel restrictions are being implemented around the world. lama hasan joins us now from london with the latest. lama, good morning. >> reporter: and good morning to you, whit. local cases of this new rar i can't are on the rise. infections now identified in hong kong, israel and belgium. scientists sounding the alarm on this variant which they say is the most heavily mutated variant discovered so far. they worry it could evade vaccines and be more transmissible. this morning, the uk instituting an emergency travel ban on six southern africa countries where it was first identified. israel and singapore also introducing travel restrictions. overnight, the eu saying it's planning to follow suit. now today the world health organization holding an emergency meeting and could designate this variant as one of interest or one of concern. the global markets reacting with stocks taking a hit, whit.

>> lama, news of this is coming as some european nations are implementing new restrictions as well. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. europe now the epicenter as a fourth wave is sweeping across much of the continent with a big surge in covid cases, germany, one of the countries hardest hit, is recording more than 100,000 deaths since the pandemic began and the world health organization is warning of a further 700,000 covid deaths in europe by march if current trends hold. now, both austria and slovakia have entered lockdowns, france is ramping up their booster shot campaign and portugal and italy are tightening restrictions requiring people be vaccinated to go to social activities even in areas considered low risk for covid. now, the netherlands reintroducing mask mandates in stores and ordering bars and restaurants to close at 8:00 p.m. this is a stark reminder we are not out of the woods yet, whit. >> absolutely, lama, thank you. we turn to the troubling rise in covid cases back at home as well and hospitalizations also growing fears that the

thanksgiving gatherings that we've all been experiencing could make the situation even worse. trevor ault is at the brooklyn hospital center with more on that part of the story. trevor, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. listen, we know millions of americans are gathering with their families this holiday weekend and they have the blessing of health experts provided everybody is vaccinated. but there's already some alarming signs as to where we may be headed. in the past two weeks 35 states reported covid-19 infections had risen at least 10%. that's happening here in new york city, it's happening in washington, d.c., the highest transmission rate right now is in michigan, but beyond cases, 21 states reported hospitalizations were up at least 10% in just the past week, in fact, in minneapolis, one hospital brought in a military medical team this week to try to provide some backup to their exhausted staff that are still treating so many covid-19 patients and now we have to wait for this possible holiday surge because an axios/ipsos poll

found that nearly half of americans who said they would be gathering for thanksgiving may be meeting with unvaccinated people and, as we know, unvaccinated are several times more likely to be infected and after that they are significantly hospitalized more. will. >> trevor, thank you so much. black friday and so many are getting a jump on their holiday shopping. many waiting at stores overnight to get in as the doors open, especially with concerns about supply shortages. new data showing early holiday spending already up nearly 20% from last year. the one, the only becky worley is in the heart of it all this morning in front of an h&m in new york city. becky, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, will. yeah, they opened the doors about five minutes ago and there were maybe ten people waiting outside to scoop up those deals. i have to say it's been one of the strangest lead-ups to black friday i have ever covered with supply chain issues. we had really good deals dropping earlier than ever and now we had the stores yesterday closed on thanksgiving but new data dropping last night tells

us that shopping online on thanksgiving was better than ever. this morning, doors opening as shoppers hunt for deals in person. >> i am the black friday queen. ask anybody who knows me, i am like, let's go. >> reporter: with chains like macy's, walmart and target closed on thanksgiving, today the die-hard deal hunters are on the lookout. >> got to get here first, early bird gets the worm. i got the xbox here for my son, he made the honor roll so i'm happy to get it for him. >> reporter: there are concerns lots of products won't be available because of the supply chain shortages so if you go to a store, then you can see what's actually on the shelf and adjust your shopping list. >> reporter: and prices are competitive. at walmart a new deal just going live at 5:00 a.m., this samsung soundbar with a subwoofer did now $99, a $50 discount. and clothing sales at big chains, madewell is 30% off, the gap, 40% off and old navy, 50% off. >> they're going to try to

entice you to buy something perhaps that was not maybe number one or number two on your list by offering you a better deal. >> reporter: new data coming in overnight from adobe analytics shows the deepest discounts on thanksgiving day were on toys, apparel, computers, tvs and sporting goods. with shoppers spending at least $3.5 million per minute online. the data highlighting individual top sellers on thanksgiving that skewed heavily to tech gifts and toys and forecasts further black friday discounts today on furniture, electronics, appliances and clothing. now, adobe also reporting a huge surge in online shopping throughout all of november, but it's too early to tell if that will actually make the malls more subdued today. one thing i can tell you with everyone coming back into the malls after covid and the stores being closed yesterday, it's going to be a really strange holiday season, so, will, my advice is to shop early, shop

i want to start with what becky just said. she's never seen a black friday quite like this with deals so early, it feels like it's been a week long already. what are the differences you're seeing from years past till now? >> yeah, every year black friday is a little bit different and it's been earlier and earlier but you're right, i think we really want to help shoppers get the stuff they want and get it early so they're confident and feel like they have that perfect gift for everyone on the list. earlier we get the deals going the more confident we can be. >> that's what we keep hearing. after covid and the hiatus that folks seem like they took instead of going into the stores from shopping online, are you seeing them? do you expect to see them back in the stores in person this year? >> i think what's most important is that shoppers do whatever makes them comfortable. definitely we expect to see some shoppers back in stores so they can touch and feel the product. they have that confidence, they get it in their hands and can take it home. if they're more comfortable shopping digitally or by a phone

or maybe having a consultant come to their homes, all of those options are available. and i think what's most important as a shopper you should do whatever makes you feel comfortable. >> let's talk some specifics we've been hearing. supply chain issues, folks are about to start shopping today, what should they expect in terms of what you've got stocked in the store and what they might not find? >> well, here's what i can say, at best buy, we have more inventory than ever. more inventory than last year, more inventory than two years ago, and so we are really well situated for the holiday and it's across all the brands that people want, all the products that people want and not just today but we expect to continue to get more throughout the holidays so, yes, i encourage you to shop early but there is a lot to choose from. >> are there specifics that you might not have in stock because of supply chain issues? >> there are definitely some products that are a little harder to find. that's always true in consumer electronics like gaming consoles are more constrained or certain mobile phones are harder to find but for the most part there's a

ton of great gear out there. >> we've been talking about inflation and folks paying a lot more for everything this year. what can they expect to see in your stores in terms of prices? >> so as you led with, there are a ton of great deals out there and you can find those deals all over the store and that's the good news and everybody really wants to have a great value and make sure the customers feel like they're getting a great value. more so what we're actually seeing is a little less promotional environment than pre-pandemic but truly more promotional than last year so i think you're going to see a ton of great deals and value for the consumer across all kinds of products including vacuums. >> corie, i'll put you on the spot. your best tips, black friday tips for folks heading out right now. >> yeah, so, there's three shop early.uld say.- but also shop confidently and shop creatively, so shop confidently, we have a black friday price guarantee. if for any reason the price goes down after black friday we will automatically refund you the

hours of busy traffic from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. the best time to get on the road all weekend long is really before 12 noon. now, in the air this week has already broken a pandemic record. more than 2.3 million people flying on wednesday, that was the day before thanksgiving. the most travelers since the pandemic began, sunday is expected to break that record with more than 2.4 million passengers. now, if you're looking to avoid delays at those airports try to get that first flight out. those are usually on time and you'll be able to avoid all those crowds that we're going to be seeing, whit. >> as you noted sunday is the big day so watch out for that. gio, thank you so much. will. >> that first flight out is tiring. the holiday weekend forecast, cool and dry for most of the country. let's get the outlook from brittany bell from our station in new york city. good morning. >> the map is turning quite active especially after a quiet thanksgiving. so let's start out with some snow. that's the scene right now looking at some snow falling down in black forest, colorado.

they picked up about two inches of snowfall and a nice holiday scene in seymour, wisconsin. that's west of green bay, that snow continues to come down in that area. that same system bringing more snow across the interior northeast heading into today and that could lead to additional travel problems with winds gusting as high as 35 miles per hour blowing all that have snow around. and then looking at travel problems across the remainder of the country, dry across the southeast, more in the midsection but as we head into the second half of the weekend we'll see more of that atmospheric moisture popping in rain across the northwest and rainfall moving across the southeast, whit. >> all right, brittany, thanks so much. cecilia. we're going to turn to southern california where the weather threat this weekend is hot, dry air and powerful wind gusts that knocked out power for tens of thousands and kaylee hartung joins us with more on this from los angeles. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning. there's never a good time to have your electricity shut off.

but thanksgiving day might be among the worst. power outages across southern california left thousands of people here scrambling to try to figure out how to save their holiday. overnight, intense fires and strong gusty winds forcing power companies to cut electricity off to nearly 70,000 customers. the inconvenient public safety shutoffs a last resort to prevent downed power lines from sparking more fires as santa ana winds whip through the area. >> it's very frustrating. especially getting the text saying it might not come on till saturday. >> reporter: a red flag warning now in effect until this evening. winds greater 70 miles per hour ripping through the ground. residents preparing for the worst filling up their propane tanks. >> it's something you learn to live with. >> reporter: these shutoffs becoming more frequent as california suffers from decades of drought and dry conditions made worse by climate change. even without power, many residents thankful for the roof over their heads. >> i'd rather have excess wind and less power than be burned

thanksgiving day parade, the retailer is welcoming back the crowds in stores across the country. earlier we checked in with jeff gennette, the chairman and ceo of macy's moments after the doors opened for black friday. jeff, good morning to you. it's good to have you. so the doors at macy's opened a short time ago and you were right there to greet the black friday shoppers. what was that like and are the crowds coming back this year? >> it's great to see. so we opened at 6:00 a.m. like we did last year and the crowd size was about double where we were last year and they're coming in now. they were shopping feverishly yesterday online and have really been since the end of october for black friday so it's going to be a good day. it's a good start to the holiday season. >> and as you know it's been a difficult comeback from the pandemic for so many businesses, now many stores are dealing with supply chain issues. price hikes, how is macy's holding up? >> we're holding up well. so we're not going to have any supply chain issues for this holiday.

we started, you know, in the beginning of the pandemic really working with our overseas suppliers and we moved up our ship dates. we were using different ports in addition to what we do in l.a. we're working with all of our partners and we're going to have all the right gift categories and items. we have about 20% more inventory on hand than we did last year. to do what we think will be in the mid-20s, more business so we're well poised for the holiday season and we won't have supply chain issues. >> speaking of those items, tell us about the season's hottest sellers right now and any big trends in what people are buying. >> yeah, you know, they're buying luxury so i will say, when you look at our beauty and our fragrance gift sets, very good. the ugg brand is doing phenomenally well, ralph lauren brand across men's, women's, kids, but they're also going for great commodities. housewares, we've got cookware sets from tools of the trade and rachael ray that are really extremely strong. 1400 thread count sheets are really good. you know, the whole toy category

has been with our partnership with toys "r" us has been fantastic so we have something for everybody for any price point, for anybody on your gift list, very strong this year. >> and how about shipping, getting gifts to where they need to go in time for the holidays? are there any guarantees that packages will arrive on time? >> yeah, we're going to be much better than we were last year so we're ready. anything that we're ordering from the customers online is going out either today, or they're going out in the next couple of days so we're in great shape with that. i also expect that we're going to have a later cutoff for christmas shipments this year. you know, based on just that last mile supply chain and what we're doing with our partners, so there's not going to be issues and customers even those procrastinators can basically order online much later than last year as well as coming into stores. so we're going be in good shape. >> a lot of people are just sort of wandering into stores shopping for the first time in a while. what safety precautions are you

taking in the stores and what should people know about masks or employee vaccine requirements? >> so what we have with all of our colleagues basically we recommend that they be vaccinated. every colleague is wearing a mask, you know, we recommend that our customers wear masks, you know, when you think about health and safety of both our colleagues and our customers it remains a very top priority for us. >> you have big news this morning for the holidays, the big man with the white beard is back. tell us about it. >> so, obviously the thanksgiving day parade is kind of the kickoff to the holiday season for america and to have santa arrive at herald square at noon eastern time, he's back. he's ready and santa is back in our stores so that is really good to have, you know, these amazing customers, basically can interact with santa and a number of flagship stores, santa is back. >> santa is back. let the kids know. all right, jeff gennette, thank you so much for your time this morning. we appreciate it. >> thanks, whit. great to see you.

all right, now to growing concerns about smash-and-grab robberies at stores nationwide as, of course, the holiday shopping season is kicking off. the latest incident, a nordstrom in california and the criminals stealing designer goods and zohreen shah is there. good morning, zohreen.

>> reporter: hey, cecilia. yeah, lapd detectives are looking for leads right now, and they think the very people who are behind these smash and grabs are also responsible for over 100 different robberies here. now, look, if you are shopping this weekend, expect to see a lot more security. this morning, dozens of suspects are on the run after a string of brazen heists at retailers. >> we recognize that one of the characteristics of these is that these are not one or two suspects, these are multiple suspects, four, five, six, seven. >> reporter: over the last week multiple department stores and luxury brands targeted nationwide like this oakland clothing store where 30 people ransacked hats, shoes and clothing off the shelves. just hours before thanksgiving day, police say robbers used bear spray to assault a security guard at a canoga park nordstrom. five of them striking ahead of the shopping rush. police say they made off with $25,000 worth of designer purses.

last weekend, perhaps the most brazen of them all, 80 people bursting out from cars in what appeared to be a coordinated flash mob-style crime running through the aisles at a walnut creek nordstrom snatching items and pepper spraying one employee and attacking another. >> there was a mob of people. the police were flying in. it was a scene out of the movie. it was insane. >> reporter: and just one week ago chicago police say 14 thieves stormed a louis vuitton in broad daylight making off with $120,000 worth of merchandise in mere seconds. >> we immediately acted recognizing the impact this is having on retailers, the sense of safety on our communities. >> reporter: so there have been several major robberies just this week, but so far only six arrests. one of them happened right here at the grove at the nordstrom. police say that thieves used a bike and a hammer to smash through a window. they then took off but police chased them arresting all the people inside the car. guys. >> really frightening situation there, zohreen, thank you so

transmissible. now, this morning, the uk is instituting an emergency travel ban on six south african countries where it was first identified, israel and singapore introducing travel restrictions skptd eu now recommending to suspend all air travel from countries in southern africa. the world health organization is holding an emergency meeting and could designate it as either one of interest or one of concern. this as europe battles a fourth wave of covid cases. the world health organization is warning of a further 700,000 covid deaths in europe by march if current trends hold. now, both austria and slovakia have entered lockdowns, france is ramping up their booster shot campaign, and portugal and italy are tightening restrictions. back in the u.s., in the past two weeks alone, 35 states have seen cases climate least 10%. that's happening in new york city and in washington, d.c. and the highest case rate is in michigan, 21 states now reporting hospitalizations up at least 10% this week alone. will.

>> lama, thank you so much. we are now going to head home after the holidays. many americans already on the road and getting on flights and abc news transportation correspondent gio benitez is back to break down when you should make your move. hello, gio. >> reporter: hey, will, good morning again. yeah, sunday is going to be the day to watch out for. we'll see so much traffic on the roads and in the air. let's bring back times, those worst times to get on the road right now. that's today 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. tomorrow between 2 and 7 and sunday, again, the have busiest 1 to 7:00 p.m. if you want to avoid traffic get on the road before 12 noon. on wednesday, the day before thanksgiving, we saw the most people flying since the pandemic began. more than 2.3 million people. the tsa expects to see even more people on sunday. that's more than 2.4 million passengers, so really try to catch the earliest flight or get on the road early to avoid headaches.

>> always appreciate those tips. becky worley, she is back again on the black friday beat. becky, you've been out there all morning long. what are you seeing? >> reporter: i was out in times square. there were people lined up to shop but this has been one of the strangest lead-ups to black friday i've ever covered. supply chain issues and good deals dropping early and biggest retailers kept their doors closed thanksgiving but new data out overnight shows early sales were huge on thanksgiving. online shoppers spent an average of, get this, $3.5 million per minute, per minute. the deepest discounts yesterday were on toys, clothing, computers, tvs and sporting goods. now, the question with shoppers heeding those warnings to buy early, will black friday in physical stores in the malls be more subdued today? hard to know. we are seeing forecasts for further black friday discounting today on furniture, electronics, appliances, and clothing.

>> we do love becky worley and love the creativity and the deals. we want to turn to a book helping parents prepare their kids for worst case scenarios, a kids book about safety by a mom of three who is also a certified emergency manager and she's teaching families how to be ready for any situation, especially during a holiday. zohreen shah spoke with her and is back with that. good morning once again. >> reporter: good morning, whit. the holiday season is often the busiest time of the year for emergency crews and just being a little bit prepared can go a very long way. but how do you get your kids on board? okay, so we spoke to the author of a new kids' book who has some tips on how to possibly save your life. >> i've seen firsthand how preparedness can literally save lives. >> reporter: the author is on a mission, she wants kids to know surviving major emergencies can often come down to one thing, being prepared. what you're trying to get across is being prepared is really simple.

>> it speaks directly to them and invites them to participate in the process. we have control. we have more control than we think. >> reporter: the mom of three and certified emergency manager with over a decade in experience breaks down safety basics in a kids book about safety like what it means to be prepared. a list of possible emergencies and the tools and plans that can help. all of this is especially important during the holiday season. >> large congregate settings with a lot of family in town in homes, you have increased risks for types of emergency. >> reporter: the number one emergency, house fires. >> the most common disaster emergency in america are house fires. so on average you've got about two minutes to get out of an active house fire. what we don't realize we underestimate our ability to see. it's smoky. it's really difficult to see so knowing how you'll get out,

always identifying two ways in and out of every room in your house. >> reporter: and be prepared for every kind of disaster to hit your region. >> disasters are increasing with intensity and frequency. there is no question about that. what we're seeing, though, is that human suffering can be mitigated through a lot of preparedness efforts. >> reporter: sutherlin also works with judy to create prepacked emergency kits curated by experts. another part of being prepared that is critical. >> we have everything here from glowsticks. >> reporter: the most important part of being prepared she says, having a plan and practicing. >> having hard conversations, making an emergency plan, getting supplies, practicing your plan, those are all crucial steps that will determine how well you survive after an emergency. >> reporter: okay, so the author also stresses that you got to tell your kids that bad things can happen but don't panic them.

tell them that these things don't happen every single day and if and when they do, hey, even the adults are going to be really scared. whit. >> of course, very important to know and, zohreen, christmas of course we know is less than a month away. what are safety tips when it comes to christmas trees around the house? >> reporter: well, whit, you know what, i just happen to have one of these in my hand. so you have to keep one of these near your christmas tree. the fire extinguisher, keep it behind the tree so it's away from your kids. the second tip is try to use l.e.d. lights on your tree if you can and the third tip, okay, look, it's really picturesque to have the tree right next to the fireplace but you have to keep it a safe distance away. they recommend at least about three feet. whit. >> great advice. i'm glad you just happened to have that fire extinguisher right there ready to go just in case. zohreen, thank you so much and happy black friday to you. let's check once again with brittany bell. good morning. >> good morning to you, whit. it was a very wet thanksgiving for southeast texas. take a look at this.

[ laughter ] >> family disappointment. you've done okay going your own way. >> that's right. >> you've also added producing to your resume as well and "the good doctor" in season five. what's it like to operate behind the camera? >> wow, it's, first of all, another thing i'm grateful for to have a successful series on the air for five seasons is no small feat and, you know, i give all the credit to our writers and our great cast. but it's fun being behind the scenes. it's nice to be able to create worlds and to be able to populate them the way that i see them and just to kind of enable others to do great work. >> i know that actors love to look forward and don't dwell on the past too much. however you were on "lost," one of the greatest shows in television history, we're coming up on the 20th anniversary of that show, any chance for a reboot? >> i get asked that question all the time. >> i got to ask it. >> you know what, it was an
