crime but make the community stronger. >> it does not make communities healthy or whole. we want to get in front of it, get a holistic, humanitarian response that is going to pave pathways to safety. larry: open police have released this surveillance image of the black toyota rav4 wanted in connection of the murder of 28-year-old eric davis sunday. he was killed sunday afternoon. his car had been broken into and he noticed the suspect breaking into another car, interrupting the burglary is when a passenger in the suspect suv shot davis. kristen: two suspects accused of taking part in the flash mob style robbery in walnut creek make appearances today. videos showed a huge crowd streaming in and out of the store. county prosecutors say 90 people

took part in the retail theft. one suspect was taken into custody today after prosecutors said he was mistakenly released from jail. they added he admitted to being part of the burglary at a pharmacy in alameda county the same night. larry: san francisco started their response tree -- crisis response team with one team and are six. they are helping people suffering from mental health and drug issues. leanne melendez with the results. lyanne: for years, crime, homelessness and behavior have been the top concern. >> peo peo peo of the worst times in their lives and they are looking for help. lyanne: the help starts at the dispatch center. today the mayor toured to see how in the past year dispatchers

have been able to redirect calls to crisis response teams. >> skirt responded to more than 5000 calls. those calls represent a decrease in emergency room visits, ambulance rides and law enforcement responding to nonviolent calls. lyanne: 58% of these calls have been redirected to the six teams operating 24-seven. each team has a paramedic, clinician and a specialist who has experienced a similar crisis in the past. >since april, close to one thirc of the people who have interacted have been connected to a provider or treatment program. >> we need to take this important issue of helping and assisting the mentally ill away from the police and toward professionals who are trained and go to school and are prepared to deal with challenges on our streets.

lyanne: more than 75% of the people seeking help are homeless. next year, another team will be added. kristen: new california's ban on high-capacity magazines can continue to be enforced following a ruling by a federal appeals court. the court overturned two lower court judges and upheld the ban. it was a decision that may be headed tthe supremcot. judges ruled there is no evidence people have been unable to defend their homes due to the lack of large capacity magazines. larry: at least three people are dead after a shooting at a michigan high school. a 15-year-old boy opened fire, killing three and injuring six people including a teacher in oxford north of detroit. the suspected shooter is a sophomore and in custody.

the boy is not talking but police believe he acted alone. kristen: the latest covid develop its, the ceo of moderna believes the current vaccines will be less effective against omicron. scientists are concerned about the number of mutations the variant carries. the who is advising people over 60 or those at risk for illness to postpone travel. they are expanding the surveillance pilot program at some airports. >> this for specific arrivals, increased capacity to identify those with covid on arrival to the states and enhancing surveillance for the omicron variant. kristen: the program is voluntary and the airport has the highest level of participation of any airport at the program. stocks dropped on renewed concerns about the variant.

alliance helps low income immigrant families thrive. linens with a closer look. >> on a recent tuesday morning we visited the alliance in san rafael during their food pantry distribution. early in the morning, volunteers arrive to prepare produce, canned goods and bread as local residents line up to receive groceries. it happens every week. >> it is so impressive walking in and seeing everybody go into work and getting in trucks. these are hard-working people. so i'm happy to be helping. >> he lives in novato and began volunteering with the alliance during the start of the pandemic. the nonprofit serves the largely latino and low income community. it is a densely populated neighborhood and feels worlds away from the wealthy zip codes that allow it.

>> the nonprofit ceo. the crisis he has been on the front lines, helping test and vaccinate the latino community, which at one point made up 80% of the counties coronavirus cases. but the work of the canal alliance extends beyond the pandemic. >> immigrants escape the cycle of poverty. >> housekeeper who e housekeepee from mexico, her two teenagers and end -- attend the afterschool program which helps you to get the resources to go to college. >> for me it is important that my daughters graduated from university so they have a better future at work and housing because the houses are not so pleasant. i like the program because they

4:00. in light of the omicron variant, the u.s. has expanded surveillance and testing at the airport. new cases were found in japan and europe. 44 cases have been found across 12 countries in europe. in the u.s., the fda says it is working to investigate the variant but vaccinations and boosters are the best thing do to stay safe now. there is a caution from the madrona ceo that current vaccines may be less effective against omicron due to the mutations. what do you think? spencer: i'm doing all i can to stay safe. the experts are saying it is almost inevitable that the new variant will eventually be found here. so i'm back to washing her hands as possible, sanitizing, avoiding crowds. and i have been boosted but further boosting is necessary

i'm in line. kristen: we have seen a rush. drew: we are in a better place than a year ago, people are vaccinated, but this is what you want to see. you want to see where it is going, when it enters a country and when we find variants of this what you want. we will have to keep track of new variants after omicron. he will keep you in, this nothing new. it's good we will see where it's going. larry: we don't know at this point and it will be a couple of weeks. in the meantime, be cautious. an interesting change to twitter's rules about posting pictures and videos. twitter says you must have a mission to post video or images of people on their site.
