southern african countries. this is after biden announced a ban. the bay area has had a lot of firsts when it comes to covid. 2/6/2020, a 57-year-old woman became the first recorded person in the nation to die of covid. february 27, the cdc confirmed a solano county resident was the first to be exposed. in may of this year, a symptomatic teacher taught a class unmasked. 27 cases of the delta variant were identified. and san francisco has seen the first several delta plus cases. >> dr., how concerned are you about this new variant?

>> i am concerned about the unknowns and the fact that we could still have surges of delta and omicron with pockets of transmission. but i am also saying we do not need to panic. it is the same virus and the vaccines will still work to curve -- curb the spread. larry: it is early in the detection and investigation and how the variant is different. dr. colfax said it is believed to be more contagious than delta. do we know how much more? >> we do not. if you imagine a 3d model of the coronavirus, those so i proteins -- those spike proteins are what find their way in.

delta had eight of those. omicron has 32. so it could be more contagious. this was spotted in south africa and now it is in over 20 countries. so the possibility is there but it does not mean it will cause more severe illness. larry: you got ahead of me in terms of my next question, to explain to people, the proteins look different in this variant and it can attack something specific. how long before we know the present vaccines will work against omicron? >> from everything i have heard, i think we will have some definitive peer-reviewed evidence within a few weeks. if we look at what happened with

delta, the vaccine worked in terms of preventing severe illness. that might be the case with omicron. but it has to spread to even run into that country. if i were to make an analogy, the protein is like a wanted poster. if you change the hair and put on some glasses, it can still be tracked down. there is not a worry that the mutations will be so wild that the vaccine will not work. if you get the booster, your antibody level will be so much higher and it should protect it. larry: that is a great analogy to explain it. otherwise it is hard for many to comprehend. do you think we will have a wave of omicron? should we change or adjust our holiday plans? or just get boosted and live your life? >> i do not think anything

critically changes in terms of preparations. we were already having over 700 deaths a day because of the delta variant. so we have the same heightened concern. the pandemic is still here and we are still at risk. if anyone is planning international travel, you might reconsider but -- because you could be stuck at your destination for several weeks. travel restrictions changed by day. this variant poses a lot of unknowns. larry: it could impact a lot of people for christmas and new year's, just not knowing if we can fly and get back. >> absolutely. pay attention and get tested when you need to. do the things we have been talking about for the past year and a half. >> the announcement about this

variant is just the latest part of what has become a worldwide response. now that the variant has reached the u.s., the question is, what happens next? ucf -- usf hopes to grow a living culture of the omicron variant itself. a virology expert says having the virus itself is the gold standard for predicting with the variant might do. >> how is it replicating in an organism? how does it spread? >> you can add it to cells or the original and see if it infects better. >> and infectious disease researcher at stanford has researched omicron.
